Would it be possible to make a Skyrim knockoff using RPG Maker?

You could, mattering on how good of an artist/scripter you are. But I will say that free-roam RM games are... tricky. I see a lot of buggy linear RM games, so I'll be skeptical on any project advertising such a thing.

Perhaps, but then the limitations of the engine will never make it as good as the original :3 Also copyright.

Ok, just wondering using RPG Maker VX lite could you make it so you fight on the map instead of on the battle screen?

Yes, you'll need scripts for that though.

Look up Action battle system

It is possible in the same way that it is possible to pound in a nail with your keyboard.

Very hard, but not impossible?

Would it work with VX Ace lite?

Reminds me of when I wanted to make a "Shenmue Mini" in RPG Maker 2000 after Shenmue came out...

It would certainly be possible in the full version (since you can't use scripts in Lite) so you could implement a day/night, weather, and action battle system. Beyond that, you would need to event characters to have their own daily routine (if you wanted to recreate that aspect from Skyrim as well) based off of the day/night script. That would likely be the most complicated part. Otherwise there would be lots of tedious database work creating items, weapon variants, crafting, etc.

As a word of advice, that is a bit too ambitious for a first project and you'll likely get deterred because of all of the work involved and abandon it.

That or just lose interest given the amount of time it would take. :P

Expanding on Besus's idea... By creating your day/night/time system using common events, you have a variable too that grows every... let's say 60 frames. For each NPC you have multiple conditional branches that rely on the variable being at the certain amount of time, then it flips a switch (Then after a certain period of time it flips the switch off, and flips another), that turns on a page (to make the whole event neat) and then you program the custom move route to each NPC based on your preferences. So it can be done, purely with events, but it'll take YEARS to make every NPC original. And also... please don't tell me you'll actually be doing this in any lite version of any maker... It's a no go.

Of course! That's the great thing!

It'll just take plenty of time and effort.

You don't have to learn how to script. Eventing is a lot easier to learn, and you can still do a ton with just using events.
