  • Hey you're the guy I talked to about the weapon requirements right?

If not, disregard this and I'm sorry to bother you.

I enjoy the good ones, with great but challenging balance. I have a soft spot for SMT, mostly Persona 3 and 4 though what I played of Digital Devil Saga I liked. Persona 3 remains one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Dark Cloud is mostly nostalgia, I think, but I also love that one. But more than anything, I love open and interactive worlds. So. Morrowind.
Mostly Morrowind. Fallout New Vegas almost got there for me again, but not quite.
That's why I picked up RPGMaker - to make a giant sprawling mess of stuff to explore, heavily guarded by rules and lore and the need for experience, but more than that the simple need to be involved in that lore and the rules to succeed.
All that said, I like way too many RPGs, man. Playing the Witcher 3 right now, off and on. It's been great so far.

Besides SMT, then, how bout you?

I like a lot of RPGs too. I like Dark Cloud. Weird mix of action RPG, dungeon crawler, roguelike and town sim(replace with inventor sim in 2), but it works surprisingly well. It's far from the best game ever made, but I wouldn't say it's bad. In the 2nd game, the Ridepod is too fun and overpowered to avoid using. (The "Use only Ridepod" challenges are some of the easiest ever)

I tried Morrowind, the combat was too frustrating. I ended up hating it a lot. It's too hard at first, with bandits able to f*cking ONE SHOT YOU WHEN I KEEP F*CKING MISSING MUDCRABS AND THOSE STUPID EEL THINGS. Skyrim's not much better since the f*cking killmoves I'm not even going to go over (let's just say they screwed me over way too many times). I actually levelled up Speech a lot and other non-combat skills, and increased Stamina. Which proved to be the worst decision ever and I got my ass kicked whenever I engaged in combat. It would've been a lot nicer if Speech let you negotiate a ceasefire or something. I HAD TO F*CKING RESTART BECAUSE I WAS GETTING SLAUGHTERED BY F*CKING EVERYTHING AND ITS MOM! It was RIDICULOUS! In both of those games the combat feels extremely tactless, once you know what you're doing you can win with little effort. You mostly just have to be stronger than them, rather than, say SMT games, where you have to consider your party, elemental weaknesses for both your enemies AND your party, use buffs and debuffs. In ES, you basically spam healing magic. Overpowered healing magic is a trope I HATE in RPGs, I wanna use the cool ****. The good thing about those games is the ability to turn into a vampire/werewolf (my two favourite mythological creatures EVER), but even those have stupid drawbacks, like not being able to level up (I played Skyrim not long after it came out, don't give me the Dawnguard BS I know you're going to give).

Funny enough, I quite like Oblivion, as I feel it's easily the most competent in the combat department of ES. Actually, let me rephrase that, out of the three I played it is the ONLY game with even a slightly competent battle system. And you can mod it to make it better. To start, it's faster, blocking is USEFUL, no random chance BS in standard combat (get those miss rates and killmoves outta my dayum face), enemies with elemental weaknesses have a noticable difference, and unlike the other two games you're not constantly shifting between godlike and wimpy (like getting into a fight with a dragon and killing it in 5 shots, then dying to a bandit). Now, that's not THE reason I like Oblivion, sure it's miles better than Morrowind and Skyrim with that. But the thing that shoots it into its own league is the voice acting. I love the dayum cheese.

Wow. Didn't think that post was going to be so long. Sorry.

    Long posts = good posts.

I'd have to argue with a lot, there, when it comes to ES games. They're very flawed, absolutely. But I can easily explain why Morrowind is the one almost everyone prefers, and that's because it's the one with the most synergistic components (and very few of them inherently bad). Morrowind has VERY light leveled lists, (pretty sure just some crates with scrolls/potions?) which is easily the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in an RPG, in comparison to Oblivion and Skyrim wherein almost everything is leveled to your character. That alone is a game killer, once the illusion wears off. The most common complaint I see about Morrowind is that the combat is frustrating, but I'd wager that's why it's so much better than in Oblivion and Skyrim. Morrowind actually rewards you for skill specialization and leveling, and while the reward being better accuracy is a bit frustrating in an action RPG, well, I'm not really there for an "action" RPG in the first place. I'd argue that Morrowind is a better RPG, but Oblivion and Skyrim are a bit better action games. Which one you like more is personal preference of course. You've also got the fact that Morrowinds main quest is leagues better, and yes, objectively. This is because, again, it synergizes with the large worldspace by encouraging exploration, providing down times -- not rushing the player to complete it as fast as possible. On top of that it doesn't lose the cult charm and deep lore that Skyrim has begun to wane on, a staple of the series, and likely in part due to Michael Kirkbrides excellent cryptic and philosophical writing.
I definitely agree that once you know what you're doing, the combat is easy peasy in these games. Course you can say that about most games. Dark Souls 3 was a snoozefest for me just because I had become so in-tuned with the rules and ques of the series. And that's not a bad thing, but it does remind you that it is more about how the game teaches and not really what it is teaching. Or, at least, that's how I see it.
And uh, if I had it my way, there would be no voice acting (or next to none) in the newer ES games. Much more time to put stuff that matters in, this way. Same for settlement building and excessive crafting in FO4, and completely nonsensical smithing in Skyrim -- eyeroll x5000.
The healing is not very problematic, except for healing items. Which encourages pausing the game and downing twenty, or whatever, and they're usually instant. The worst balancing issue is definitely that you can save at any time, for some reason. These games should probably have used a "save at certain spots/on exit" kind of method. And as far as elemental weaknesses go... not sure I've noticed them in any of the games, to be honest. You can really just slam ham-fisted (prolly blindfolded) through Oblivion and Skyrim anyway, just make sure you pick up the predetermined higher-tier weapons/armor at all the predetermined levels along the way, no matter where you go or what you do! :)

But... well, I'd really recommend giving Morrowind another shot. It's really about learning, exploring, and becoming acclimated to the world. The difference in Morrowind, compared to Oblivion and Skyrim, is that it doesn't do much hand-holding. And you can't just do whatever you want right off the bat. That's what makes it good, definitely. There is real progression. But, if nothing else, at least learn about the background lore through all the books! There is so much to learn about and ponder in ES lore. That alone makes all the games worth playing.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
