  • I've always dreaded planning for my games so I just didn't plan at all. That... didn't work out after all. :kaosigh:
Turns out it can be kind of fun if you keep the scope small and don't take it way too seriously.
Hope to get some game making done this weekend. I miss it way too much (even if it's only been a two week break).
It's important to make back-ups of your work. It's also important to be actually able to not get lost in all the back-ups you have.

I always put the date of the backup. I learned long ago that "back up 1" and "back up 2" can be misleading, LMAO. I don't overwrite because sometimes you're just gonna bork and need to go back a version. XD

All my backups are in a .rar file which has the name of the project and the date the backup was made. That way I can tell which is the most recent.

You're right, writing the days is most helpful. I don't know why but since August I just had "nameOfGame AUGUST" and "nameOfGame SEPTEMBER" and since I was using two computers some of the back-ups were on the desktop PC, sometimes I used a laptop, some of them were on a flash disk, some of them on a 2 TB disk...
You can imagine how it went.
Too bad real life is not RPG. Tried to stuff 20 books and a laptop into my backpack. Didn't work, it just fell apart at the worst time. :(
You know these baby names sites some people use to name their characters? I tried to look up names from my language. Was not disappointed.

Having him in the group would be dangerous because he could take over some of the weaker minded psychics behind the scenes which could have some interesting effects in the game's progression ;)

Glad you liked the video. Ylvis do a lot of parodies of music genres and it's usually so stupid but entertaining.
I haven't seen Castle yet, or the others you mentioned. But Castle is watched by a lot of people in this household so I am going to watch it sooner or later anyway. My favourite detective show is probably Medium for whatever reason. Need to watch that one again.

Having a mind-controlling person on the team who could control the other ones... he could quickly become a villain himself. Seems like he has his own agenda so yeah, that's pretty dangerous. Especially because the weak ones are quite important.
    It's going to be interesting.
Me: Finally a weekend. Need to spend two days doing math assignments. RPGMaker forums: No, you don't!

Time Fantasy has a new free tileset! Makes me more excited than Christmas when I was a kid. :kaojoy:

Oh, today's Giant Tree tileset is looking great as well!

Right now I'm still using RTP & placeholder maps but I intend to use Time Fantasy eventually & even doodled around with it for a few small forest maps. Luckily the way I designed the game makes it so I don't have to have that many maps :)

Mapping is probably my greatest weakness, right next to making a simple game more complicated than it needs to be lol I'll totally send you some screenshots of my attempts when I get home.
Of course it starts pouring when I want to take a walk outside. *sigh* Back to making games, I guess.

@kirbwarrior I think all hiking shoes have such a sole surface that the mud gets stuck in the gaps and then when hardens, it makes it hard to clean. It wouldn't happen if they had flat soles, but then it would be more slippery, I guess.
It is only a problem in the forest/on the field after it rains. I just need to avoid these places when the ground is too wet. :(

@Traveling Bard Cold weather, I wonder what that means for you in Texas. I also thought last week I liked cold weather because it was way too hot. (Though I know for 25° C sounds probably nice) Now the temperature dropped 10 degrees and it's too cold for me, haha.

I hate umbrellas. Don't know why. Still prefer the plastic raincoats, even if only kids wear them here.

@mishakoc It is normal during winter for it to get down to 10°C though I've experienced it get as low as 0°C for a bit. It doesn't really snow here. I can remember 3 times in my 31 years of life that it "snowed". I guess it's one of the benefits of this place if you aren't a huge fan of cold weather :)
It has been a long time since I felt this challenged while mapping for my project. It's a surprisingly nice and fresh feeling, actually.

Right now I'm using very different tileset and sprite art, so this wouldn't fit, but I'd like to finish the generator someday. But I'm no pixel artist, so the quality would be quite... questionable.
No idea how to shade it, haha. Or how to properly draw complex clothes and armour.

It looks goood *0* Reminds me of XP a little but I like that style. Many people use xp tilesets even now. Keep up the good work~

It's interesting it reminds you of XP, because it's actually Fighter08 from the XP RTP. :) Different clothes though.
Yeah, the XP RTP is much better than MV or VX/Ace. Too bad it doesn't have a character/battler generator, otherwise I'd definitely use it.

:kaoblush: Thanks, I'll try to work hard (hopefully). But I have no idea what I'd do for battlers if/when I try to finish the generator. That's way too much work.
Never in my life have I thought I would be researching princess dresses. But here I am.

That overly frilly dress was Rococo, 18th century fashion worn by wealthy French aristocrats. For a more simple style around the same period try Baroque?
Although the simple and elegant dress you showed would be from 10th-14th century medieval/dark ages. From the 16th century is Renaissance/Elizabethan and it starts to gets very theatrical and frilly from then on :)

For a medieval style that looks noble/royal, try Byzantine! :)

@The Stranger Looking into other culture's dresses is a great idea, thanks!
@RitualTeeth You are right, the older history looks more like what I'm looking for. The Byzantine dresses look noble but not impossible (the drapery will kill me though, haha). Thanks for the suggestion!

I played a game like this made in vx ace! It was called it's our revolution. The objective of the game to gather as many followers as possible without getting stuck (like the snake game in old phones). Nah I still think it's cute ^^ MV graphics are very cute that's why they don't really fit in with serious rpgs.
    mishakoc
    mishakoc
Yeah, snake is what I was going for. To my disappointment, it is way too easy to implement.
The various levels designs and difficulties will probably be more difficult than eventing.
I wonder if I should make every follower distinct...
I don't like MV's graphics much. Ace's was better, XP's the best. But they don't have battlers sadly.

    Its like rpg snake. Cool!
I accidentally knocked over a kitchen timer into a pot of boiling water. What incredibly stupid thing did you do today?
RPG Maker taught me the true importance of naming variables normally, using functions and keeping proper documentation.

I find it easier to manage. Sometimes, a map ends up cluttered with so many events that it becomes a pain to work with; this often happens when you have a few different cutscene events, plus the standard map events, on one map. I don't do it for every map, just for certain ones.
    mishakoc
    mishakoc
I usually have a lot of events on a single map, so I use picture labels to know immediately which are cutscenes, mini cutscenes, initialization, teleports, etc. So I don't have any blank events.

I thought about using copies of maps for cutscenes but I feel it would make me more confused than it would be helpful to me. But I understand it might be helpful to other people.

Comments are really useful if you go on a break and come back to your project confused. It's good to help get back on your feet. But there are times where I would read a comment and still get confused as to what I was doing.
Instrumental music - the best kind of music to listen to when working on your projects.

Music seems like something people don't even register consciously when watching movies/playing games, even if it's the easiest and default way to set the mood, I think.
A lot of scenes would be so awkward without music - remember a scene - three people staring at each other for 5 minutes, just the camera changes. But since there was a soundtrack that made it mysterious/epic, it wasn't such bother watching it.
    The Stranger
Yeah, music and sfxes often fall into that categorgy of things that you don't notice when it's done well, but which you notice if it's bad or missing entirely. Take footfall sounds, for example, it's not something you tend to praise or even notice in a game, but it's something people notice when a game doesn't have them.
    The Stranger
And, as you said, music can be, and often is, the main reason we feel certain emotions in a game or film. Music has a powerful effect on us. Music can make us feel things, or even recall old memories. Would your favourite emotional scene from a game be as powerful without the music and sound design? Probably not.
My entire legs are aching so much from work today. I seriously need to start working out or something. (...Yeah, right.)

@The Stranger I do have walking boots actually. Use them as winter shoes and shoes for hiking. But in summer it gets way too hot so for normal walking in woods I just wear sneakers.
I don't really get blisters, my feet just feel they're going to fall off.
How's that fun?! And why is the needle heated? It works even if it's cold.
    The Stranger
Holding a needle in a flame sterilises it; don't want to get an infection.
    mishakoc

Oh, how come I didn't know that? I wouldn't use a needle to poke my skin but still...
How come days pass by so quickly? I can't get anything done.

Good choices. Computer science and engineering should afford you some decent opportunities; I know we could always use more engineers over here if you can't find work in your neck of the woods.

Oh, I'm sorry, it sounds tough when so many people fight for one place. Also, agree with @The Stranger, engineering is a great degree to pursue.
I'm cheering for you, you can do this!

I was planning on getting new character management feature into Character Generator, but my recent illness has delayed this somewhat. I will try and get it done today (which would be a miracle) but if not, I will have to complete the whole lot by Tuesday. This should hopefully be fine and all other feature updates should not have their target dates affected.
Everybody: "Hey, weren't you supposed to be making a game"?

I've been watching videos about the videogame streamer Open Hand charity scandal, and the rabbit hole keeps getting deeper. At first it was just a lot of donated money being grossly neglected for years, and now there's a lot of money unaccounted for, which could turn this into a legitimate IRS crackdown.
Let's have some fun with my advent calendar. What would you like to see for Day 3: land, sea, or air? :rheh:
I've been thinking about doing a jokey submission for the Christmas jam in which, like a cartoon special where all the characters "play" a counterpart in A Christmas Carol, my MagiCats would each play a role from the C.A. Smith story The Coming of the White Worm, with Cyprian as Evagh, Rousalie as Dooni and so forth. But in the end, I figure all my development efforts should go toward the game proper.
