  • Gotta say, I miss this place. College is fun and I have 100% in the programming class, but there's something nostalgic about this site. Maybe I could have Shaz or Kes scold me for old time's sake, lol.
So, I'm quitting RPGMaker. I've realized finally that my game is too complex for it. It just isn't going to work like this. I've spent around 5 years and $2,000. I have little to show for it. Going to go back to college and take up game dev and coding. Thank you all for your kindness.

I can uderstand your pain. Still, I love RM and I'm sticked to it. Good luck!

One fundamental skill game dev will likely teach you is determining scale. Doing it as a hobby affords you infinite possibilities, but operating on limited resources and time means we won't always get what we want. Knowing where to cut some fat is also a good skill to learn if you want to be creating games in the long run.

Best of luck to you in your pursuit of game dev for college!

    Welcome to the retirement club.

I think I'm just about done with portraits. I finally figured out how to manipulate the lips, though I think the smiling one looks a bit off, still. Luckily I don't think I need to make an angry version, as I can't think of a situation when Anwen would even be angry. Game isn't long enough for that.
My game got its first investor today! He's given me $750 to spend as I see fit so long as it is on this game, in return for a percentage of the final profit. He also told me not to screw him over about thirty different times, so I've got a lot of work to do!

I've been working on updating this old thing lately, including different facial expressions. Thoughts? I'd like to have one with a slightly open mouth where she's talking, but I can't seem to edit the mouth region without ruining it. No idea how I got it so perfect the first time, but it doesn't help that I don't have the drawing tablet I made it on anymore.

Have you tried expanding the lower jaw and maybe the cheeks while the mouth is open?

The old masters studied anatomy for their paintings. Maybe you could picture how the skull and muscles would move when the mouth opens this way or that.
Okay, so I went a bit overboard and made some more alternate outfits. White is still pretty boring, but eh. Thoughts? Oh, and I also included the final version (I think) of the running animation. (See attachments)

Thoughts, this time? I also have been toying with the idea of various outfits you can unlock for getting different endings, so I made this "royal" version of her sprite. (See attachments.)

Edit x4: Okay, it works! Just click on the attachments. The animation doesn't look right to me. It looks more like stomping than sprinting...

I've been dreading and putting this off for years, because of how much work it will be... 56 unique frames. Minimum. But, I've started, and it's not as bad as I thought so far. So I guess I'm going to have a run animation soon. I guess the hardest part was actually putting my foot down and starting it.

Anyone else feel like they're stuck, unable to make progress, and unable to do anything about it? I do, and it's making me feel increasingly frustrated.

I just end up endlessly editing tilesets and stuff,
and the only progress/work within RM is seeing what I can do with them... (and thinking that it might, maybe, be useful for something in my current project)

I'm stuck on developing my game and a drawing I'm working on. I think I need a 'little' time off from both.

Not currently but have definitely experienced it. Taking a short break can help, starting on another project can help, playing other people's RM projects can help and give you ideas. Once in a while I will just spreadsheet a bunch of random ideas and sometimes it becomes something cohesive.
Okay so, I'm using this script, right? And it works. If you press :Y a menu should come up allowing you to choose an item to use. Nothing happens. You press :A to open the event options menu and choose "Use an Item"? The item selection menu appears. I have no idea how I set this up or why it works the way it does. Absolutely bizarre.
Ack, I've got to make a script support thread... I hate doing it now; I feel like an annoyance to people. Especially because my questions are usually stupid. Or, at least I assume they are when I don't get any replies lol. Oh well, I'll just make it in the morning. No point doing it now if I'll be asleep.

I feel you. I also have an overwhelming aversion to making my stupidity other people's problem XD and I tend to feel stupid for posting when no one answers.
But the coding geniuses around here are good peeps, so give it another try. You're not hurting anyone by posting. Just make sure to use screenshots whenever possible so they can see what you're talking about.
So, I've been wanting to do this randomized logic puzzle in my game for years now. I finally figured out how to do it by using arrays and a few small script calls. It's based on the Einstein Fish Puzzle! :D Though, I have no idea how to actually have the player put in answers.... might start a thread about it.

Yeah, I had assumed I would use a comparison check like that, but I meant, like, HOW to have the player input the answer. The puzzle itself is a room-wide contraption that will open a door when given 25 pieces of correct information. How do I have them input that information, though??? It's not magic, so you can't just talk to it...

Put a console or something in the room they can enter it into.

Ah, and therein lies the problem. It's a medieval tech society (computers exist, just in a different area of the world) and everything is stone, metal, and wood. ...I just had an idea. The player is presented with portraits of 5 lords, each of which has 5 traits represented by slots in the wall. You insert labeled objects into the slots and if they all match the door will open!
Well, I'm quickly recovering from Covid, but I'm still broke and injured lol. I miss working on my game! I think I've figured out a lore-friendly way to do a tutorial section separate from the main gameplay, but it'll take some scripting know-how. Which I don't have. And can't afford. :p
My entire family and I have Covid... If it's this bad with the vaccine, without must be terrible. Stay safe, everyone. This thing is a doozy.

I had Covid recently and I'm not vaccinated. It wasn't that bad, I had headaches and lost my Smell + Taste for a bit but it came back after the 10 days. This variant isn't as deadly as the initial ones but rather more infectious. Still, best wishes to you and your family!

I went through covin before there were vaccines, but practically asymptomatic. I'm vaccinated and I hope I don't get it anymore. Hold on, it'll be okay!

Sorry to hear. I have it currently as well, but I seem to be lucky. It was pretty debilitating for the first 24 hours, I had severe chills and light-headedness and fatigue, the fever actually broke and the chills receded as I was waiting at the doctors office though, and this morning all I have is a mild headache. I wasn't vaccinated because of an underlying condition though, so who can really say at this point?
Why do I keep deluding myself into thinking things will get better? They never have, only gotten worse my entire life. I've failed at every thing I've ever aspired to, it feels like. Even RM. I'm too incompetent to learn code, so my game will never be finished. I try to stay positive, but I honestly just want to give up.

I know I'm not alone, and unfortunately it's not exactly comforting knowing that there's miserable people everywhere. I'm just so sick of hearing people say "It gets better, don't give up!" when that is nothing but a massive lie. I no longer have income, or any medical coverage, and both of my parents have terminal conditions.

It's okay to vent. With all you have going on, who can blame you for being upset? Actually, I'd even say venting is good because holding it all in seems to explode at some point.
