  • Ah pooh!  The second and third assignments for my intro programming course are team projects!  I hate team projects, when everyone is doing the same thing.  Give me an artist and a musician and a designer and I'm fine, but 3 programmers is just overkill - especially when the other two are likely to have never seen a line of code in their lives :(   How do I say "please don't ask me to join your team unless you consider your abilities at least close to mine" without sounding like a complete jerk?

I kinda understand the idea 3 programmers to do a program is like 3 painters to paint on the same canvas.  Its kinda... Well if I started to see two other mouses in my photoshop I would yell like a star cook at who is buzzing around in my plate!

Now gimme two who each agree one do the BGs the other the graphisms and I might let it go.  :p

yeah - clearly defined roles are okay, and that's how we did it when I worked for any company as a programmer in a team.

I actually tutored this very course 10 years ago.  Unfortunately it's too long ago for me to get an exemption/credit so I'd have to do it if I stuck with maths.  My experience tutoring was that most of the students had never done any kind of programming before (they estimate 75% will be in this group) and really struggled to pick things up - especially overseas students for whom English is a second language.  I also learned while studying other courses that being in a team with people who finished year 12 last year is vastly different to people who had 10-20 years' experience in the workforce and were going back to study by choice.  In general, the former put in the least amount of work required for a passing grade and were more interested in the extra-curricular activities, and the latter really had their noses to the grindstone.  This was also true of me when I first went to uni - not that I was at all interested in socializing, but I didn't apply myself and my grades reflected that.  Second time around I got top marks for almost everything, even the subjects I struggled with the most.

I'm going to switch maths for finance.  And drop that unit.

Think I figured out a nice, efficient way to determine what an autotile ID should be based on the surrounding tiles.  Tomorrow's task, if I have time, is to put my theory and settings to the test and see if I can actually autotile a map on the fly.

I took a break from modding a few months ago, due to some personal things that were going on.  The view was for it to be a temporary break, or a permanent one, depending on how RL progressed.  Lots of things are changing for me right now, and I decided to make it a permanent break.

It is much nicer to come to the forum just to see what's going on and to offer help, than to 'check up' on everything, do moderating tasks, and then defend myself both on the forum and to the Degica office, when people complain about me doing what I'm supposed to be doing.  Seriously some people think the world revolves around them.  Be nice to your mods - it's a difficult and thankless task. </today's community announcement>

Hey...  I am now just practicing Spriting.  But Tiling is next.  Have fun with your researches.
Woohoo!!!  Study assistance application - DONE!  Taxes - DONE!  Except my payment summary, which I'll forward through to the accountant as soon as it arrives.  Feels so good to have them taken care of.  And that means it's time to repeat my yearly mantra: I will stay up to date this year.  Though last year was my best one yet - only had to spend an hour or so going through everything and adding a few more items that I didn't document as they happened.  Now I have to see about getting some 'evidence of learning' done up for Zach's homeschooling over the coming week, and everything will be taken care of - just in time for me to start studying.

Can't believe the accountant charged $700 to fill in those two forms!  AND on both of them, in the "are you (me) the person we should contact if we have any questions about the business/trust?" he said NO and put the accountant details.  So if they want to ask anything about the company or trust, they can bypass me and go straight to the accountant, who can spend 15 minutes answering their questions and charge me a nice couple of hundred for the privilege.  I don't think so!  Crossed that out and said YES, you CAN contact me about it :)  Sneaky, sneaky accountant.  Wish I could go back to the days of doing it all myself.

Don't worry!  After you finish your degrees or as a hobby you can read/learn about it unless it is illegal to do that where you live.  ;)

We can do it ourselves, but the company stuff, and new stuff I'm getting into, makes it more complicated than just the basic accounting stuff.

Awwwww...  Bureaucracy!  But know, I am not doubting your skills.  :)
We have such great landlords, but crappy agents as intermediaries.  There'd been a bit of work done, but the agents hadn't advised the owners that it had been completed.  So they came up this weekend to take a look and see if we wanted to talk about anything else with them.  We're going to plant out a lot of fruit trees over the next couple of months, so I mentioned it'd be nice to have a rainwater tank, so we could save on water charges when they start growing.  They'd planned to add one at some point anyway, as well as a garden shed.  So now they're going back home to look at prices and suppliers and start the ball rolling as soon as they get their taxes done in a few weeks.  Not only are they giving us a tank, but a pump to go with it, and a garden shed to house the pump, that could easily fit 2 cars!  When I mentioned it, I was thinking sometime over the next year or two, but the way they were talking, I wouldn't be surprised if they do it all in the next 2 or 3 months!  Had to pick myself up off the ground!

I had a pet sheep when I was young.  All black, except a white star on his forehead.  Called him Ebony, and he was allowed inside the house and slept on the floor in my room.  I think "Ebony" might have become "Dinner" at some point when I was away from home for a couple of weeks.  I don't actually remember what happened to him - it may all have been too traumatic and wiped from my memory.

lol!  So, to apply for study aid (which I'll lose anyway the moment I go back to work), I have to fill in some paperwork for our family company and private trust (which were started when I began game development).  I don't have all the details, so got my accountant to do it for me.  Two forms and $700 later ... clearly I need to become an accountant!

I graduated from uni in 1992, and ever since then, I've had this recurring dream that I had not graduated, because I hadn't completed Algebra & Calculus I and II.  Those units were never in my list of courses, but I dreamed that I was meant to do them, and that A&C I was so hard that I couldn't get past the first couple of weeks.  Now I may go back to uni, and guess what two units are in one of the degrees I'm interested in doing?

say I like maths, and I do, but there's a definite wall there, where I'm good/okay with everything on this side, but struggle to comprehend what's on the other side.  I know if I do this major, most of it will be filled with stuff on the other side.

I have an opportunity to go back to uni.  Debating whether to take it.  Tempted by Psychology as well as Mathematics and Statistics, for <reasons>, but they're each 12-unit degrees, which puts me over the limit for a double major.  I'd have to try and get credit for units I did 10 years ago (probably unlikely), or try and convince them to let me do 4 extra units.  Plus, just looked through the list of units for each one.  They look really hard :(

Welp ... I submitted an application for psychology.  Applications close July 7 and teaching starts July 11.  They take up to 10 days to process, so I should have an answer back by the start of term.  At that time I can decide if I really want to go ahead with it.  I sure hope the staff in this course are more professional and only pass those who deserve it, not pandering to those paying high fees.  I suspect any uni that takes in international students at higher fees will be the same as this one.

I contacted them and asked them to change it to a Psychology and Mathematics double major.  Realized after submitting the application that though I can't take Psych / Maths & Stats as a double major, I can take Psych / Maths, so if I'm really, really keen, I can go back afterwards and do Maths & Stats and get credits towards half the course requirements - could be done with the next degree in just a year longer.
I'm not good at making battles interesting, and have been worried the whole development time about this.  In the wee hours this morning I woke up after dreaming that my mother (who is not computer savvy at all!) wanted me to make a game, which turned out to be more of a VN than an RPG, but it had battles and an overworld, and it was a really interesting mechanic - nothing spectacular or mind-blowing, just something I'd never seen or heard of before - and when I woke up I thought that'd be perfect to do in my game.  At the time I thought I should get up and write it all down so I wouldn't forget, but it's winter here and my bed was nice and warm, so I went back to sleep.  Naturally, I can now remember bits and pieces of it, but not what it was that made it so special. The bits that I do remember are not that much different to the default battle mechanic.

    Should'a wrote it down :(

In other news, I so want my game to just be finished already, but it's been so long and the thought of figuring out where I left off is just scary.  An I want to rewrite it so I can redo all the scripts and make them better.  On the horns of a dilemma ...

If you EVER register a domain name, pay the extra cost for WhoIs anonymity.  I didn't, based on not remembering to have ever been offered/accepted with my previous domains, and I'm regretting it big time.  Only a week, and I'm being flooded with emails from people who think I NEED to have their logos, web designs, mobile apps, and are all waiting for me to get back to them.  The best offer so far was for provision of full sample layouts and no payment required until I approved one.  I might be tempted, if I had spare cash.  But then spare cash might be better spent seeing if I can get that option I initially didn't take.

No, I avoid gmail like the plague.  A domain name is only $20/year for me.  Private hosting (not necessarily a dedicated server) is a different matter.  But both are absolutely necessary if you want to be perceived as a professional.
I am at my dad's place.  Met the man who wanted all dad's poultry, and his lovely family, and we caught (we think) all of them and they're gone now.  I also trapped the cat to take back with me - that was much easier and faster than any of us expected, and I can sleep peacefully now, without worrying about whether he'll turn up or not.  He's beautiful, and so incredibly calm, considering he hasn't had much human contact at all.  I want to go home now, but it's getting late and I don't like driving at night.  I also need to stay to just make sure there aren't any stray chooks that evaded the round-up.  Not sure what I'll do with them if there are.  It's so cold here ... 10.7°C but feels like 8.3°C, with strong wind gusts going right through the house :(   There's going to be a frost in the morning :(

lol - emus!  On our honeymoon, way back, Mark - my husband just fyi - took me for a drive through a wildlife park, where you could wind down the windows and feed the animals from packets of pre-bought food.  He decided placing the packet between his legs while driving might not be the wisest idea, when an emu stuck his head right through the window wondering where the food was :D   They're fast, and those beaks are really hard - a combo that packs quite a punch!

It rained all night last night, and it's still raining lightly today.  Love it.  Today is a "pull back the curtains and work while it's raining" day.  However, I hope it clears away today, as I found a buyer for all my dad's poultry, and tomorrow I have to make another trip down to meet him and spend the late evening catching 25+ chooks.  Dad and I froze when we went down there on Tuesday - going to be one miserable night if it's raining too :(

We are not moving house.  Renewed our lease today for another 12 months.  My dad has accepted that he can't be on his own, and even if we move to be near him, there's still a great risk, so he's made the decision to move here instead of us moving there.  Thank goodness, 'cause I took him home on Tuesday, planning to stay a few nights, and it was absolutely freezing!  We came home a day early, and aren't planning to go back apart from day trips to sort out his things and get him moved.  I'm sad for him, as I know how much he wanted to stay.  But I think this is the best outcome for him, health and safety-wise, and I'm so relieved that we can stay where we are.  Now life can get back to normal again.
