  • You know how you should ditch the toxic, negative people in your life?  What if they're family?
    AwesomeCool
    AwesomeCool
Well the best way would be to back off from the family (but ofc that is really hard).

It might cause them to even listen to you (they won't listen if they don't want to and they won't change there mind until something big changes anyway), if they think you are serious and important enough (although they might only do that til they think you are back and won't leave, or not think you are serious and not take you seriously).

I mean, I bet you tried to get them to stop being toxic tons of times, but they just continued to ignore you.  So if they do not want your help and it is hurting you, the best option would be to cut off the connection (else you will just continue to deal with them being toxic).

It is up to them to fix there toxic behavior and you should not have to suffer due to there decisions. People can only change if they themselves want to (hence the whole first step to fix a problem is admitting you have a problem saying) and that generally takes heavy external force for them to even consider it.

@Shaz extended family also means people who don't live in your house, your cousins, siblings' spouses, siblings, aunts or uncles, etc

My dad was the toxic element for a while I tried ignoring him on Facebook and stuff, but it got to the point that I dreaded even getting on Facebook.  Then he said some horrible things to my wife and I lost it on him and told him exactly how I felt.  It was hard, but getting everything out helped us move past it and things are getting better now.  It took about a year, so it wasn't easy, but I'm happy it happened now.
As of this morning, I've lost 10kg (22lb) since the start of the year.  With all the things that are not going right this year, it's nice to have a few positives.  That's 1/3 of my goal weight loss, and I should be able to reach my 'ideal' weight (based on height & age) by the end of the year.

Its not so bad, but there is a big ass storm overhead here right now. Sorry to hear about your old man, I am currently caring for my grandmother (No, its my house I am not a fat internet loser that still lives at home) but folks are saying I will have to put her in a home too soon. And I am kinda not keen on the idea, wish she'd just die in her own bed in her own home honestly. Is that bad?

I can't say I have heard of Stanthorpe though, that one is out of my wheel house.

Yeah, dad's the same.  All of his family have passed away in their own homes and he doesn't want to go into a nursing home (not quite at that stage yet anyway, but the way he is at the moment, it probably isn't too far away).  We're planning to move to be near him, but not with him, which isn't ideal.  We'd like to find a place that's large enough for us all but still give everyone their own privacy, but he doesn't want to move, and it's not fair for us, renting, to ask him to move if there's a chance we might not be able to stay too long.  So we'll just stick with the current plan and see what changes in the meantime.

Stanthorpe is on the Granite Belt, about an hour north of Tenterfield.  Wine and orchard country.

Cool beans, well all the best with that Shaz!
My two external hard drives have died - seemingly because I picked them up and moved them to another desk and plugged them into another computer.  This makes 4 Western Digital hard drives we have had over the years that have failed within a far-too-short time period.  One of them has complete backups from my last 3 computers - projects in, or finished, development, all my photos.  Unfortunately the previous "fix" of pulling them apart and making them internal hard drives won't work this time, due to using a laptop now.  My only thought is, thank goodness the complete backup I made of my laptop before reinstalling Windows, I copied back over to my laptop afterwards so I wouldn't have to take the external drive with me when I travelled!  I don't think we'll ever buy WD products again (in fact, I recall having a discussion about whether they were trustworthy enough to spend our funds on when we bought the last two).

In other news, my dad in hospital down here again.  6 hours to see doctors, have tests and get him admitted yesterday, plus the two visits to his own GP and the 2 hours of travel.  Didn't get much done yesterday.  I just wish they can actually do something to help him this time!  This means I'll be doing day trips to take care of his animals, rather than staying down there, until he's released.  While that should mean less time away from home, it's a 5-hour round trip and I'll be doing it twice a week rather than once.  I'm tired just thinking about it.

i have had my western digital green for 3 years and it works just as fast as day 1, bad luck on those WD drives!
Trying to make Windows 10 open .rvproj2 files using the standalone Ace instead of the Steam Ace is like pulling teeth!  Although the issue is with Windows 10, I don't recall a piece of software or platform that I've ever detested more than Steam.  I swear I'm going to delete it one day.

Got it working for now, but took way too long to get there, and I'm not convinced it won't switch back the moment Steam updates or I open the Steam version.

Always ups and downs with the newest windows at least my opinion the good far outweighs the bad its too bad its been like 9-10 months and it still has program comparability issues fortunately for me the program incompatibility list shrinks each month I do not regret the upgrade unlike 8 and 8.1 it feels fast and effective so far despite the cons with privacy and etc. But I may be switching to linux with Virtual Box once I learn how to operate linux that will solve pretty much everything for me as I can run an emulator there from windows 98 to windows 10 if I can find the iso files. But that isn't for years from now I do not know how to code and my command line knowledge for the terminal is rather weak and I have to upgrade a few parts on my PC before I can use Virtual Machines.

I don't mind it, though I only got it when I was forced to - broke my registry (so I didn't really want to be trying to edit the registry to solve this problem) and had to reformat/reinstall everything, so I bit the bullet.

The biggest problem is that when I go to associate a program with a file extension, if there's already an association there, there doesn't seem to be a way to remove it.  I can change it, but only to a program from the store - not to something else on my hard drive.  If I try and do it via the program list, none of the RPG Makers appear in the list.  And if I use the old control panel (which is the same as right-clicking and choosing Open With and checking the 'always' box), I can select the standalone Ace, but it still tries to open with the Steam Ace.  I suspect it's because they both have the same 'friendly' name, which is what it shows, and ignores the path?  I don't really know, but I'm over experimenting for now.

only time I ever broke my registry is if

    1. I broke it using an optimizer like advanced system care

So we have 3 cats.  The youngest, 15 months, was a rescue and we got her last January when she was only a baby.  A trip to the vet last week, and an emergency trip this morning, and it turns out she may have FIP.  Blood tests tomorrow if her temp doesn't come down overnight.  If she has it, with care and attention she may have another couple of months left, but we couldn't bring her home anyway, as the other two would then be at risk.  How do you explain that to a 14 year old who loves animals?  Feeling totally helpless in every aspect of my life right now, and things just keep getting worse :(

Mark broke the news to him this morning, even as much as needing to put her to sleep if the blood tests come back positive.  He handled it surprisingly well.  I, on the other hand, am a complete mess, and it's probably a good thing that I wasn't there to be part of the conversation.  We should have test results back this afternoon or in the morning.  I feel terrible not being there for her, but I'm sure I couldn't cope.  I've never been able to be present with any of our previous pets either.

@Crimson Dragon Inc. Mark and I are religious, but Zach isn't, so we wouldn't get far with that approach.

RIP Simba :(   This shouldn't happen to a baby :(
My 14yo son decided last year that he wanted to go vegetarian, and late in the year, to adopt a vegan diet.  He's done heaps of research, and he does almost all his own cooking and his own grocery shopping.  Because of his interest in healthy eating and his dedication to it, Mark and I have also found it easier to be more mindful about how we eat and getting more exercise.  While we're not going the same route as him, I've lost 8kg and Mark's lost over 15kg since the start of the year.  That's about 1/4 of my goal weight loss.  I'm really proud of Zach!

When people ask if XYZ system exists, it's usually because they want to use it in their game.  That's why we have the request forums.

Posting it in the status update leaves it visible only until a few more people post status updates.  After that, you only get attention from people who go through the status history.  Posting in the forum leaves it there permanently and everyone can see it - including people who come along after you who might have the same question.
I'm having an extended visit with my dad this week.  He fell on the weekend while my sister was here, so I had to come down early so she could go home.  It is sooooo cooooold today!  I only brought shorts and tee-shirts with me, and one jacket :(   And we're only 3 weeks into Autumn!  I can't believe we're planning to move down here in the middle of winter!  I would take my laptop back to bed with me, but it's going to be hard to use the mouse and an external monitor like that.  Toying with blankets, but I'm not fond of bulk.  And there are no heaters :(   Brrrrrrrrrr!

I wouldn't inquire about personal information at all, by any means, unless you consider yourself to have a good friendship with that person.  I am not a very social person, and there are only a very few people on this forum who I would consider myself to be friends with.

I'm going to lock this now.  Please don't PM me to ask my age or any other personal info, because I don't want to give that information, to anybody.
Forum tip: It's really not a good idea to tell someone how to hack MV to circumvent the trial period.  Especially when the last post prior to yours is a staff member saying you're not allowed to circumvent the trial period.

#1 bonus to having to reinstall Windows & upgrade to Win 10: I can now get the developer console via test play in MV, and don't need to create all my projects in the inetpub folder and test them in a browser anymore.  Yay to being able to put my projects where I want them to go!  I was really hoping this reinstall would fix that issue - it stumped a number of people who are far more clever than I.  I'd say it's worth it just to get that working :)

Yeah, it did, on so many levels.  I could get the dev console up, but it wouldn't actually do anything - couldn't see the scripts, couldn't walk through line by line.  Some "can't connect to socket error" thing.  I had a few people look at it and they couldn't figure it out either.  Ended up having to keep all my MV projects in a completely different place to the others, just to get that working, and when I wanted to test I had to do it in the browser.  A very annoying inconvenience.

The other bonus is going to be having multiple workspaces on my desktop (the only thing I ever found appealing about Win 10), but I haven't set that up yet, so will have to wait a bit to enjoy the benefits.

lol - I could have used that information back in November!  Unfortunately, I couldn't ask anybody who didn't have MV pre-release, and I didn't know who had it and who didn't.  Ah well, all is good with the world now :)
I broke my computer.  Deleting a program manually 'cause uninstall failed, and removing stuff from the registry (done this successfully with this program before).  Apparently I removed a bit too much, and said program wouldn't work after reinstalling, Chrome wouldn't work, email program wouldn't work, numerous games wouldn't run.  So my week has been filled with backing up all my files (1 day), downloading & installing Windows 10 (1 day), reformatting, resetting, installing Windows 8.1 followed by Windows 10 (1 day - cause first Win 10 only did an upgrade and not a complete reinstall & format, leaving registry still corrupted).  That's where I'm at now.  Got to go away today, and when I get back home tomorrow I can begin to reinstall all my programs and put my data back where it belongs.  At least there isn't much crud that came with the reinstall or upgrade I need to get rid of.

    So how's YOUR week been?

We had made a decision, a month or so ago, that is going to be life-changing for us.  We have turned our lives upside down to cope with a family situation until that decision can be implemented.  While things are very difficult, they have been going according to plan, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel - though it's always going to be difficult, just in a different way.  One phonecall today has made me question whether we really know or are prepared for what we're getting ourselves into.  But there is no going back.

It's going to be tough.  It will very likely be stressful and cause much conflict and heartache, potentially for quite a few years to come.  I'm not sure how I'm going to cope with it.  But I have to do it, because SOMEONE in my family has to do it, and I am the only one in a position to do it, and the only one who is willing to do it.

I know I will not get any support from my (blood) family, even though it means they are all off the hook and can shirk their responsibilities.  I only hope it does not affect MY family (husband and son), and that we come out of it sane and close at the other end, whenever that might be.

I am honestly scared right now of what the future holds.  I am afraid that this could be the worst decision I have ever made.  But it is the only logical/reasonable decision that can be made under the circumstances, and I cannot change my mind.

    aaargh!

Person A calls person B, who then calls person C with a completely different story, causing immense confusion and anxiety.  Person C then calls person A to see if that's really how their conversation went, dreading the response, and discovers that person B got the story totally messed up.  All is calm again, for a while.

Sometimes people just need to mind their own business and stop interfering.

    Now, I am Zen :)

But there is always tomorrow looming on the horizon.

I don't think I will come out of this with any shred of sanity left!
Been looking for houses for a month or so.  Not very many coming up where we want to go.  The only one on the short list, which we hope to see next week or early the week after, looks quite nice - house a bit small, yard nice and big, and vegie gardens and fruit trees already established.  But it has the main highway going past the front gate, and a train track right at the back of the block (trains only pass a couple of times a week), plus a school right over the road (homeschooling son hates schools and other kids).  Still, it's worth looking at, only 15 minutes from dad.  If we decide to apply and are accepted, the move will be in 2-4 weeks.  Nothing like rushing things :)

Gotcha. I'm considering the move from Iowa to PA. So many different things come into play...
Different state taxes on payroll, different cost of living (from county to county within the state) and a number of other things...
Like, as an example, a $130,000 house where I live now, in Iowa, would be going for about $300,000 near the city in PA.

Outside of obvious bumps based on location do you have these sort of drastic changes in prices?
    Shaz
    Shaz
The place I live now is the second largest inland city in our country.  The place I am moving to is a little country town.  But the rent there, for some insane reason, rivals the rent here.  We live in a brand new house, on a half acre, on the outskirts of town.  Down there, older houses on blocks less than half the size are asking the same price, or more, than what we're paying here.

Australia is currently right at the peak of a housing bubble.  Most houses advertised around here are asking $400,000 - $500,000.  They appear to be about $100,000 lower where we're going, but as we can't afford to buy (and don't want to buy there) we're not paying too much attention to them.  In the big cities, especially Sydney, a very small house on a very narrow block would cost over a million.  It's insane, to me, that people would even consider paying that kind of money for a house, when they are so much cheaper in other places.  But then I also consider it insane that people would want to live & work in the capital cities ;)

A house for $130,000 would be incredibly cheap here, and if you bought one for that price, you'd expect it to either be WAY out in the middle of nowhere, or to be very run-down and greatly in need of maintenance.
    Shaz
    Shaz
Cost of living obviously changes here based on location, but we don't have all the payroll/taxation issues that you guys have.  The rules are the same across the country, no matter what state you live in.
