  • Just got back from the accountant.  I know I had a rant about him charging $700 to fill in a couple of documents for me with company stuff that was over my head.  But seriously, this guy is a magician with my taxes!  I'm still going to become an accountant so I can do them myself though :)

Or an accountant who knows his stuff :)   It's not so much loopholes and exploiting, as knowing what deductions you're eligible for.  I used to do my own, but now with a company and a trust that also has to do a tax return and divide up profits and losses, it's beyond what I learned at school.  I started an accounting degree many years ago, then got introduced to computers and switched to programming. But I've always found accounting concepts interesting.  Now that I have the time on my hands, I decided to go back to uni when they were taking mid-year enrolments.

Hey Shaz...Maybe you got the best of both worlds... you can now program your computer to be your personal assistant accountant.  ;)

Seriously I do hope you can study in as much and many fields you like in your life!
*finish to write some important code for his game in typescript* (I translated MV rpg code into typescript)

*see mv 1.3 and now update his code and PIXI*

*see the EXACT part he finished have errors now*

Welp...I guess I will have to fix that right ;A;....

Tilemap is part of the core files.  And that's what I used in my latest plugin.
You know, when you use pirated software, you shouldn't really expect the people who made it, or the people who sell it, or the other people who bought it, to help you when you run into a problem.  That's just a little bit rude  and arrogant, imo.

I didn't really want this to turn into a discussion of the various reasons people might think are valid for pirating (I know, I should have known better - it always turns into that discussion).  I was just making a point that it's a bit rude to do it and then expect everyone to support you as if you were a loyal, paying customer.  You're not.

Don't worry Shaz, I tried to get the Lite version first but got the demo and then it was on Steam and the rest is history.... Although MV was a non-Steam gift.

I like how all states poses and portraits are showing per characters thought.  As an organizational POV, you always know where you are at if you do your own spriting!  :D
WOOHOO!!!! My plugin automatically updates itself to include a resource list pulled from tileset notes!  Now the necessary files will be included as part of deployment, when checking the 'exclude unused resources' box!

That was the last step.  Now to updating all the documentation ...

GREAT!  I'm sure it'll be great to get a sneak peek at it.  :p
Been working on a plugin that's almost ready for its initial release into the wide open world.  It's a bit complicated in that it requires resources to be formatted in a specific way, added to the tileset in a specific way, specific tileset notes, and then used in mapping in a specific way, with regions adjusting how it's used.  There are a number of steps to follow, and each has to be done "just right", so a number of places where people could get messed up if they don't quite get what they're meant to be doing.

Question: would you find such a process easier to understand with a written tutorial, or with a video?

Sure you have. I don't remember seeing a published script by you which doesn't include technical specifications.

Context matters, and the format and contents can vary wildly. I bet you are just not used to the terminology, or associate it with something else.

Been working sporadically on a new plugin.  Can you guess what it does?  All the clues are there.  Last milestone hit = <something> is being displayed, just not the right thing.  Next milestone = make it the right thing.

A single autotile will have its own image file like XP, rather than being combined into a sheet like VX/Ace/MV.  It will follow the same 2x2 or 2x3 tile layout.  Animation, if used, will be as many frames as you care to set up, and they will be shown in a left-to-right sequence, again like XP.  Not the 3-frame back-and-forth sequence like the later engines.

    And transparency :)

WOOT!!!! The right thing is showing in the right place, and animation is happening.  And I discovered the multiple upper layers work a little bit differently to what I'd assumed, which is a bit of a pain.  I'll have to investigate it a bit more, but that'll be next weekend.  This week I have uni catching up to do, and 2 quizzes to complete.
It feels like it's going to be a wonderful day today.  I've had a lot of issues lately, and still trying to get on top of them, but one or two things have gone my way and it feels great.  I have a million and one things to do, I'm behind my schedule, with no idea how to organize it all and get (and stay) on top of everything.  But I still feel great.  I think it's that kind of euphoria you feel when you really have no idea how deep in you are :D

The world is full of opportunities, and I want to take advantage of all of them!  I just need another 10 hours every day.
When you get a new game in a series that you love (for some reason, even though they've been getting increasingly boring and you've questioned for the last few games whether they're worth your time and money), and put 5-6 hours into playing it, keeping an eye out for a blocking bug you've read about, and you miss it and run into the same block.  Then you find that they've released an update today that fixes the blocking bug, but after installing, only people who haven't encountered the block yet can continue from where they were.  Anyone who got blocked has to start over.

Because I have all the time in the world to waste in the first place, and then to download (1GB) and play all the way through again...
    Lunarea
    Lunarea
I'm with you on that one.

I actually participate in their beta program and have had games that I tested with issues and bugs. Then the game releases a month later and the bug isn't fixed... Then what was the point of testing?
    Shaz
    Shaz
BFG has a hectic release schedule.  Once you're slotted in, if you don't make it, you don't know when your next window will come along.  Also, they will accept updates until a week or so before launch. If they have a 'launch' version they've started to package up, and you find bugs and fix them and send a new version through, they won't repackage if the game is due to launch within the next week.  They'll release the buggy version and then later provide an update.

But yeah, if they release a MONTH after you report a bug, you'd expect it to be fixed.
    Lunarea
    Lunarea
Yeah, I totally understand not being able to fix things if someone finds a bug a day before release, but if it's a month or more, then it feels like a breakdown in communication somewhere.

I think what I personally dislike the most is how many of those collector editions games have mistakes in the bonus content. And it's not like a game-breaking mistake, but stuff like "insert text 2 here" instead of the actual text. It always makes me think no one tested that bonus stuff...
Can I ask you where we can make suggestion? I got a real great one.

Most of the time in code, we can have code that check for a specific value for exemple player direction.

That create a lot of IF.

Why not adding natively "select case" element.

That will make all game so must easyller to programme.

I'm not a mod anymore, so probably not the best person to ask.

This thread is still around, so I'd probably put it there:
So, uni started yesterday, and I'm finding it really hard to switch into study mode again.  I've got a test this Friday, and so far only have one of my four required textbooks.  Think I'll have to spend a day at the library each week until I can get the rest - lucky I live close by.  I ditched my science degree altogether (no more psychology - too much reading, too much writing) and am doing commerce - finance and accounting (lots of numbers - yay :D ).  Will finish in 2 1/2 years if I stick to a full time study load - 4 units / semester with 10 hours study each, plus 2 units over each of the summer terms.

And yesterday I got confirmation from my old boss that I can go back to work for the bank, but as a contractor rather than an employee.  Which means potentially full-time work for as long as they have projects that have budgets for outsourcing.

I know I did this (work full time, study full time, AND take my son out of school and homeschool him) for 18 months, 10 years ago.  I'm trying to remember how I managed it all, 'cause it's not looking as easy right now.

Scary, but exciting.  Those are the best experiences!

Shaz, I have been attempting to use your more escape codes mod, and so far I cannot seem to get it to work. My actors ID is 0102, I have tried \f[102] \f[0102] \f [102] \f [0102] \f102 \f0102 \f 102 and \f 0102 and nothing seems to get the actors face to show in the box. Remember that gorgeous cat I trapped when my dad decided to move house?  Finally could afford to get him to a vet today.  Had him desexed (was told by my nephew that he'd been desexed several years ago, but whatever he paid for, that's not what the vet did, 'cause in our vet's words, he had "massive testicles" when we took him in this morning), vaccinated, microchipped.  She also wanted to run a test for FIV (feline aids) seeing as he's been practically feral for 2 years.  Unfortunately it came back positive :(   He's also almost certainly been exposed to feline flu.  However, she said he's very strong and healthy, is amazed at what a lovely cat he is and how calm and friendly he is.  The aids and flu means he's going to be more prone to getting sick, and injuries are more likely to become infected.  He's going to need to looked after very carefully - lots of TLC.  His life expectancy is not reduced though, which was really nice to hear.  It also means our other two cats are at risk of getting both, so we now have to take them in for a series of vaccines to protect them against FIV, and there's nothing we can do to protect them against the flu.  Thankfully, he's such a calm and peaceful boy that even though they don't all 'like' each other yet, there have been no fights and no hints of fights.  So we hope they'll get on together and we won't have any cause for concern.  We are not going to try and rehome him now - we're just going to keep him here with us and he'll be a part of our family.  Which I wanted, but not for this reason.

Ah pooh!  The second and third assignments for my intro programming course are team projects!  I hate team projects, when everyone is doing the same thing.  Give me an artist and a musician and a designer and I'm fine, but 3 programmers is just overkill - especially when the other two are likely to have never seen a line of code in their lives :(   How do I say "please don't ask me to join your team unless you consider your abilities at least close to mine" without sounding like a complete jerk?

yeah - clearly defined roles are okay, and that's how we did it when I worked for any company as a programmer in a team.

I actually tutored this very course 10 years ago.  Unfortunately it's too long ago for me to get an exemption/credit so I'd have to do it if I stuck with maths.  My experience tutoring was that most of the students had never done any kind of programming before (they estimate 75% will be in this group) and really struggled to pick things up - especially overseas students for whom English is a second language.  I also learned while studying other courses that being in a team with people who finished year 12 last year is vastly different to people who had 10-20 years' experience in the workforce and were going back to study by choice.  In general, the former put in the least amount of work required for a passing grade and were more interested in the extra-curricular activities, and the latter really had their noses to the grindstone.  This was also true of me when I first went to uni - not that I was at all interested in socializing, but I didn't apply myself and my grades reflected that.  Second time around I got top marks for almost everything, even the subjects I struggled with the most.

I'm going to switch maths for finance.  And drop that unit.

Think I figured out a nice, efficient way to determine what an autotile ID should be based on the surrounding tiles.  Tomorrow's task, if I have time, is to put my theory and settings to the test and see if I can actually autotile a map on the fly.

I took a break from modding a few months ago, due to some personal things that were going on.  The view was for it to be a temporary break, or a permanent one, depending on how RL progressed.  Lots of things are changing for me right now, and I decided to make it a permanent break.

It is much nicer to come to the forum just to see what's going on and to offer help, than to 'check up' on everything, do moderating tasks, and then defend myself both on the forum and to the Degica office, when people complain about me doing what I'm supposed to be doing.  Seriously some people think the world revolves around them.  Be nice to your mods - it's a difficult and thankless task. </today's community announcement>

Hey...  I am now just practicing Spriting.  But Tiling is next.  Have fun with your researches.
Woohoo!!!  Study assistance application - DONE!  Taxes - DONE!  Except my payment summary, which I'll forward through to the accountant as soon as it arrives.  Feels so good to have them taken care of.  And that means it's time to repeat my yearly mantra: I will stay up to date this year.  Though last year was my best one yet - only had to spend an hour or so going through everything and adding a few more items that I didn't document as they happened.  Now I have to see about getting some 'evidence of learning' done up for Zach's homeschooling over the coming week, and everything will be taken care of - just in time for me to start studying.

Can't believe the accountant charged $700 to fill in those two forms!  AND on both of them, in the "are you (me) the person we should contact if we have any questions about the business/trust?" he said NO and put the accountant details.  So if they want to ask anything about the company or trust, they can bypass me and go straight to the accountant, who can spend 15 minutes answering their questions and charge me a nice couple of hundred for the privilege.  I don't think so!  Crossed that out and said YES, you CAN contact me about it :)  Sneaky, sneaky accountant.  Wish I could go back to the days of doing it all myself.

We have such great landlords, but crappy agents as intermediaries.  There'd been a bit of work done, but the agents hadn't advised the owners that it had been completed.  So they came up this weekend to take a look and see if we wanted to talk about anything else with them.  We're going to plant out a lot of fruit trees over the next couple of months, so I mentioned it'd be nice to have a rainwater tank, so we could save on water charges when they start growing.  They'd planned to add one at some point anyway, as well as a garden shed.  So now they're going back home to look at prices and suppliers and start the ball rolling as soon as they get their taxes done in a few weeks.  Not only are they giving us a tank, but a pump to go with it, and a garden shed to house the pump, that could easily fit 2 cars!  When I mentioned it, I was thinking sometime over the next year or two, but the way they were talking, I wouldn't be surprised if they do it all in the next 2 or 3 months!  Had to pick myself up off the ground!
