  • So tired, but don't want to go to bed. This must be how my son felt when he was 6mths old. Wonder if I can cope the way he did - crying ...
Nearing brain-dead. Do I do another 3 hours (plus stopping/debugging) of Java tutorials, or go play the newest Dark Parables?

Dark Parables and the 3-hour work session are red herrings. You make a sandwich and watch tv. Cracked Black pepper turkey, pepperjack cheese and spicy mustard. Toasted everything bagel. Then you sleep.

Today 5 managers in my department were made redundant. That's > 5% of our department.

The protagonist had been the sole system admin for 5 years and it worked all fine. He had been asking for more people, but the CEOs always declined. Well, a new CEO came, fresh and young blood. He took duties off the admin one by one. Then one day he told him to train a new guy in 14 days. Which was far from enough time to make him understand the complex system.

After these 14 days the protagonist was told to delete his credentials from the system and was fired. However, these credentials had been running important background tasks, so it crashed the entire system. The company lost customers and credibility as a result and was forced to hire a 3rd party to develop a new system... That was buggy as hell.

Learning Java. Wish I could find a video tutorial that just covered the things I don't already know from nearly 30 years of programming.

How about just reading documentation? That is what I usually do. Throw away tutorial and just read the docs. Then if I don't know anything about it, I seek for the tutorial.

@Wavelength the things I need to know are pretty basic - how to combine multiple source files into a single project, how to compile, how to create a windows application project with GUI.

@TheoAllen people have different learning styles - I do much better watching videos and being hands-on than reading something. I went through the Oracle documentation/tutorials and they're good, but they leave massive gaps.

This is the second person you have asked this. Status Updates are not to be used to ask Support questions, and certainly not to ask multiple people.

Please start a thread in the forum with your question. There is no reason to ask just one or two specific people.
I also got an email today from the IRS via a .de email address, telling me I was eligible for a tax refund. I work and pay tax in Australia.

These scams still fool a lot of people. I do like watching those scam baiting videos on YouTube, though.

lol @Benny Jackdaw ... I kinda know that ;) The post was to amuse people with the absolutely awful job they did at hiding the fact that it's a scam.

Sometimes I feel like replying and telling them all the stupid things they did that give it away, but then I think there are still some people who would be fooled, so I don't want to show them how to sound more legit and fool even more people.

Folks, post on the forum to ask for help. Don't PM a dozen people in a big group conversation. I am LESS likely to help you if you do that.
2 days of work, 5 days off. That's my kind of work week. Pity it happens so rarely :( Gonna be a tough 2 days though.
Lost the stone from my engagement ring. Getting it replaced and resizing both rings will cost more than they cost to buy 23 years ago!

Oh that's terrible, but a new stone will be shiny. Try to enjoy the renewal more than the pain of the loss of the original stone.

@WhiteW - don't know. Just realised before going to bed the other night that it was missing.
@Mrs_Allykat - not only will the new stone be shiny, but they're going to shine EVERYTHING up for me :) I don't mind getting the stone replaced - I'd be devastated if I lost the actual ring though.

It's symbol of your joy. Resizing rings is like a sign of a relationship maturing. We'll not discuss Mr. Scale. LOL!

A workmate's wife had a 2 month premie baby. I want to knit a blanket for him. Asked other colleagues if they'd like to contribute to cost.

Aaah. I figured a machine would be faster since that's how it's usually done for store bought clothing, but I guess the home versions aren't as reliable. Maybe I'm slow because I was just too used to using a crochet hook by the time I first tried knitting. Or maybe it's because I have to use the same type of dexterity with both hands.

I had apple pie as a snack and homemade pot pie for dinner. It was delicious. Glad you get to join us in the tradition next year! It's not common to celebrate it, btw, just something fun the really geeky do. My family just happen to all be even more geeky than me.

programmers are geeky. We should celebrate it by default.

So police are asking people to stop calling 000 (and probably 911 in the US) because facebook and instagram are down.

    HexMozart88 I'm not surprised.

And speaking of 911, I actually called it once, on accident. Now I'm sure people are wondering "How do you call 911 on accident?"

I was actually calling a friend and to my shock 911 answered. I told them I was calling a friend, I'm not sure how this happened.

Then my sister figured it out. My friend's number was something like xxx-xx9-11x-xxxx

I'm not shocked. I used to work for a phone company and the number of people who thought they could NOT live without a phone for 24 hours was shockingly high. They didn't care that everyone else in the state had no service due to a lightning strike, they wanted their phone NOW.

Once upon a time, we had NO mobile phones, NO internet, NO facebook/instagram/whatsapp. Yet we still managed to live. I AM glad about mobile phones now - much easier to get help if something goes wrong with your car on a long trip.

The Loco-Motion song pre-dates the dance. Meaning the lyrics are kinda misleading. "Everybody's doing a brand new dance now"... No they weren't, you just used peer pressure to trick everyone into going along with it.
