  • I learned a lot about screwdrivers today while trying and failing to remove the hard drive from an old computer I intend to turn in for disposal. I really hate that there are so many different sizes of screws and none of my screwdrivers are the right size. This would make for an evil mini-game in a modern/futuristic RPG.

Be grateful is not anything nintendo, they use super obnoxious screws (like triangular) so people dont tamper with their consoles :kaoangry:
MMOs that use a no-sub+free-to-play-based model tend to fizzle out within a few years if they don't have a large team and large budget behind them, due to the inconsistency of whale spending on F2P shop stuff. Compounded with so many copycats over the past decade, and there are only a few MMOs really worth playing nowadays. I've played a few now dead MMOs that had so much potential; it's a cautionary tale.
Shopping around on the internet for a new laptop - it's been a very long time. I'm flabbergasted at how much the gap between PCs and Macs have gotten between price and specs. I used to find reasonably priced Mac hardware and now they're ridiculously underpowered for their prices.

AFAIK, Macs have always been considerably more expensive than PCs with comparable specs. Though admittedly, I stopped paying attention to Macs quite a long time ago, so it's possible that things had changed at some point.
MidJourney, Stability AI, and DeviantArt are now the targets of a class action lawsuit over copyright violations involving unauthorized use of copyrighted work in their AI "art" generators. This was amazingly predictable for turn of events and may impact more than a few industries, including videogames.

point is: the law can be verry, verry different from country to country ...

where i live - for example - text and data mining is explicitly allowed,
however - the data must be delated, as soon, as it fullfilled the intended purpose and data, that the author opted out (in machine readable code) isn't allowed to be used ... that's something, many ppl do not know about

Wonder why DA when it's a host...

@Nereid DeviantArt recently rolled out an AI generator. A lot of artists left DA because of the shady way that the site decided to use everyone's art, with "yes" being the default even if the artist had been away from the site (as many are while working on commissions and such) and uninformed of it.
I just backed up my work from the past several months. New Year's resolution: back up work more often.
I've been pushing off the completion of my organizing of art assets for a while after I realized that putting everything into one scrapbook made the file grow so large that it takes forever to load and puts a potential strain on my computer. I need to chop it up into smaller booklets.
Congrats to OMORI for reaching 1 million copies in sales! This is great for marketing research when it comes to indie games, and particularly RPG Maker games.

Optimism is funny, considering it's luck... if one advertises more money can be spent on that than the game gets, of course...

@Nereid It is true that luck is involved, but within the breadth of marketing techniques, there are ways to tweak the odds by gaming the system. From what I've seen in my research, the majority of small indie devs have barely scratched the surface of what's possible with marketing, even on a zero budget.
Does "Contact Us" at the bottom of this site's page actually work? I asked a question in January and I'm still waiting for a reply. I now wonder if it's an artifact of the site's design that required an intern to run but was forgotten over time because the internship position was never refilled.

That's odd. Requests are answered in 2-3 days at max and that's only on weekends. It must not have gone through for some reason.

I originally figured it might take longer because my question might have been something to consult the legal department about.

I bought some more JRPGs with discount for my phone. I hope I live long enough to play them all. Ooh look another one I wanted to try!
A number of complicated dev challenges in RPG Maker seem to be solvable by putting up the illusion of an innovation instead of solving the actual challenge. It's not like the player will know that it's smoke and mirrors made to look like something much more complicated was done by the game dev(s).

A simple example would be when it looks like something important changed on the map when it's actually just the player brought to a different map with mostly the same design copy-pasted from the previous map.

Ahh, I see what you're saying now. Yeah, there have been some really inventive solutions to challenges over the years. Even in @JohnDoeNews' eventing challenges, I implemented a digital clock by making the parts out of a snow block from the tileset, and someone else used a stretched-out king bust for it (since we weren't allowed to use custom art).

@Trihan I remember that. Everyone was so against the RTP only rule, but it turns out it did inspire some creative solutions, so that is something. :p
Years of discount sales seeking at supermarkets add up a lot over time. If you have expenses you can't avoid, using ways to pay less is much the same as earning more income. This is how I'll have saved up a budget for my game's marketing.

once you understand that any economy is inherently inflationary, any 'discounts' you may find are just the product being labeled *the actual value* after it's price had been inflated previously.
    prices always rise.
    why? because banks and loans.
any student of economics knows that, and so do the economists... them not acting on it, is them being in on it.

Some of my best dishes are a result of "hey, look what was on clearance for super cheap and see what I can do with it". It does not only save some money, it is also a fun practise for the cooking skills.
I've started a list of people that might not be safe to work with or commission in the future after a composer has seemingly been exposed using unlicensed art materials for AI art on his Spotify in hypocrisy of asking someone not to sample his music.
I vastly underestimated how much people don't like to go out in the cold today while doing Elite Raid for Pokemon GO. Forcing an in-person requirement was probably not the best idea for a raid, especially when coupled with increased raid difficulty. Bad mechanics synergy can really hurt a game's enjoyability.

I am not raiding a lot anyways, I enjoy my long walks of hatching and catching so much more than trying to be in the right spot at the right time with hopefully enough people. Was happy about that one beast lately that you could do solo, because that is what I do most of the the times, just doing a random raid solo^^

I assume that, especially on a very cold day, that any raids people are participating in are of the Tera Raid Battle variety.

Well, the whole idea of pokemon go was to get people outside, so if they miss raid because they don't want to go outside, then I guess it is designed quite well. :p

Google is doing the "play a limited time videogame in browser by clicking on Google title" again, in celebration of Jerry Lawson's 82nd birthday. It's interesting because you can "edit" the map during gameplay.
Today with my limited budget, I'm getting a wireless controller, to test functionality for my game and for sanity while playing Disgaea 2.

A sad day for me. A monitor that served me loyally for more than 5 years is getting replaced. It's begun to throw very large sparks.
