  • Oh, Visual Studio... "You can't do that and we're not going to tell you why or suggest alternate options. Happy Friday!"
Well, I won't be using CamStudio. The download from their site is super sketchy. A virtual hard disk file? Yeeeeah, no.
Wow. Stuff works as expected. Bugs are largely squashed. The one really looming issue is the battle BGM... Can't seem to use the script call to make the BGM change, which is a pain because I want to randomize the music, or at least have different boss music. Phew, so worn out.
Hmm. Not sure if bad or good. One of the dungeons you can access from the beginning of my game is a purely treasure dungeon. No enemies at all.

Is there anything else to break it up a bit and justify a dungeon instead of a treasure room?  Something like puzzles or hidden stuff or a maze?  Otherwise it won't actually be any fun for the player, they'll get frustrated at having to walk around for no reason.

Maze. My dungeons are all mazes of rooms. Also, one has to set 3 things exactly right to end up with the treasure dungeon. Might not be bad. Still have more testing to do. More than one treasure dungeon might require some rebalancing of how those are set.

That sounds fun then.  I like seeing alternates to grinding through monsters.  I don't mind a little grinding, but a little variety is nice.
Pretty sure this is the code I'm working in at work today:

Also pretty sure I was just the last one to say "not it."
I hate making enemies. I hate making enemies. But this is one of the last things that needs doing and I just need to push through.
Wanted to do so many things with this game project, but time constraints are like lolnope.

:( You gotta beat those time constraints! Show them who's boss!

Can't. Not without doing something silly like blowing off work. I like my job. So, a bit here and a bit there of the project goes poof.

Maybe you can save it for the next one :(
Grumble grumble. FedEx, why won't you let me pay taxes and duties online and redirect my package to work, where I will be when you try to drop off? Sigh.

Yeah, I had no idea what I got was going to be shipped via FedEx. In North America, I'm cool with regular mail. Let it take an extra week! Ah, well. Guess it explains why not spending enough for the free shipping was going to result in $45 worth of shipping fees. Well, at least it will be here fast. Try to look on the bright side.

Yeah, I love our normal mail (USA). Sometimes it's a bit slower but there are a lot of times where it isn't even slow at all! I don't mind UPS. But FedEx, grr. They've lost so many of my packages. I hope yours will get to you relatively fuss free. XD

Well, it's in Calgary right now (clearance delay status), so it's not far off. If they can't move one box over by one province, that's a new level of incompetence that even good old Canada Post hasn't managed yet!
Are conversations between 2 forum users supposed to show up as status updates? That's a little weird to me...

Yup. So we can all casually be busybodies without you knowing ;)

You've always been able to see when someone posts on another person's profile feed, if you went to the expanded list of status updates. It's just more obvious now.
I'm torn... I like the style, but it feel like there is so much unnecessary white space... Plus the icon for the forums is now a generic forums icon... Invision Power Boards icon, I think. Can't recall.

Pretty sure there's just as much white as before the change.

I didn't mean the colour - I meant the spacing between everything. I have to scroll down to see things that used to show up without any scrolling previously. There's more padding/spacing between things,
Happy Friday! Well, unless you're the main character in Lifeline... I keep killing the poor guy.

Ever since I got to college Fridays sort of lost their spark for me. My weekends start on Thursday and end Sunday morning.

Seriously? College for me was Mon-Fri 8-3, with homework until bedtime and homework all weekend, just to get up Monday morning and start all over.

@taarna - What college does that?

All the ones I know are about 1 hour of work a day and the rest is spent in having fun in the Bahamas.
I am learning just how much I adore common events.

Yup! I've had to remind myself that even in eventing, code replication is bad.
Huh. Does popcorn really need to be marked as a whole grain food?

Yes. just like orange juice needs to state that it is gluten-free
It hit me rather suddenly that autorun events are just while loops. So, if you screw up your autorun event and your character won't move, you accidentally made an infinite loop.
    Hoppy
    Hoppy
That's happened to me a bit as I have a few complex events.
    taarna23
    taarna23
Mine aren't all that complex at the moment, I just keep forgetting. I'm hoping realize that and why this is occurring will keep me from making that mistake again!
Tilesets that can be freely swapped out without breaking the map are actually harder than they seem... but I am almost done my needed set of them!
Ugh. Last-minute Christmas shopping. So not doing that again next year. At least now I can settle in for some game creation.

No kidding. Kind of like how I had plans for game work, but GIMP keeps crashing. Oh, plans. Why do I still make them? Ha!
    AwesomeCool
    AwesomeCool
    why would Gimp crash?

Downloaded a new update for it?
    taarna23
    taarna23
Not at all, I used it just yesterday... Now it seems to crash when I hit ctrl-c, which is SUPER odd.
Random tip: When using GIMP to pare down a tileset to fit your needs, when exporting as a PNG, be sure to UNCHECK "Save color values from transparent pixels." Your file sizes will be much improved.
    mlogan
    mlogan
Hmmm, I will have to check and see if mine is set on that or not. Never noticed that bit before.

It's on by default and I forgot about it today... When I went and resaved the files, some of them were a tenth of the size.

Oh wow I made a mistake taking on four full classes at once. Now game dev isn't the only thing that can do this to me:

Oh hey, let me write down a quick explaination how to do something... 1000 words later.
Hey folks, if you post about a problem you're having, and people give you suggestions to fix it, and one of those suggestions works, don't forget to come back and let them know. And it wouldn't hurt to say thanks while you're at it ;)

Continuing our countdown with Capsule Monster #14 Plug-Go! Plug-Go was originally meant to be the design of a gameboy game I wanted to make that was inspired by Megaman Battle Network! While that hasn’t worked out I’m happy I was able to recycle his design!

Took some time to pretty up the maps too.
