  • Unlike the movie iRobot, my logic is definitely NOT undeniable. The TextPicture & ButtonPicture default plugins have given me incredible inspiration & I use them a lot. Yet I still generally avoid other plugins in preference of learning how to Event & Script. Seems contradictory.

In the world of programming, we don't call this contradictory. We say "If it works, don't touch it."
I was following my wife around a Dollar Store, trying to amuse myself and stay out of trouble, when I saw a Sudoku puzzle book and it suddenly dawned on me that I thought I knew how to make a Sudoku puzzle in MZ. And when I went home to try...turns out...I was right. Working on it now and it really does seem fairly simple.:rheh:
Posted a couple more DEMO videos based on my current experiments. A longer one for my turn-based movement experiments and a super short one for the very early experiments with turn order display and turn indicator. I will post links below for anyone interested in seeing the not very pretty experiments. Progresses!

Thanks! I really enjoy learning to make things through events and scripts. I am postponing really delving into plugins because I know when I start, I won't be able to stop. I played Morrowind unmodded for probably 15 years, but once I discovered mods and got over my aversion to them, I was addicted and spent over a year just testing mods.

Morrowind was actually my first TES game. I completely missed the first ones. I was living under a rock. But now I have them so I can go back and experience all the old game glory!
I am supposed to be preparing to teach my students this afternoon and tomorrow morning about Refugees, Asylees, and Fraud/Misrepresentation and all I can think about is how to improve my Turn Order display. :stickytongue:
I am seeing a pattern here. Anyone else experience a short term lull in motivation after you finish working on a particular thing? I am still in the experimenting/exploring faze so I spend hours/days doing trial & error stuff. When I finally figure something out, I feel sort of lost on what to start next from my long list. Going back to something I didn't finish is even worse.

Not gonna lie. Folks are trying to help on the thread, but I am starting to think that the problem is more hassle than it is worth. I am continuing to look for alternatives and try random things because...why not?

@Shaz Oops. Sorry. I didn't realize that was a rule. I will go back and refresh my memory again on those. EDIT: Interesting. I don't remember reading those before. I guess I was focused on the general forum rules and sort of skipped over those. My bad. Sorry about that!

Making great progress on experimenting with turn-based movement for combat. I have implemented movement limits, can move straight or diagonal, can check to make sure you aren't moving on top of another actor or obstacle, can discard/reset movement, end movement early, and use 8 directional arrows to move. EXPLORATION!
A huge shout out to @Arthran for posting on my matching mini game thread with a much more abbreviated and efficient sample game that can also be downloaded to test and then try to learn how it was built. I am just going to say WOW! It is obvious I have a WHOLE LOT more to learn! Thanks, Arthran!

I mean, if you're comparing yourself to Arthran then of course you do. He's a wizard, Harry.

No problem, bud. Feel free to let me know if you need me to explain anything I did.

Thanks! I am going to continue to pour over it for a while to try to figure as much out as I can. Some of the stuff I definitely recognize from my JS course. Other stuff I am pretty sure I know what it is doing, but I don't necessarily understand how it works. But it is cool to see the almost total scripting aspect of what I still have to do with Eventing!
I actually made some good progress this weekend after all. I think I actually figured out how to event turn-based movement on the map. Probably not that difficult for experienced folks, but for me, I wasn't sure how to even start. But I think I am on the right track. I also have the playing cards ready to try to event a poker game. Rabbit Hole!
My wife is not a morning person. Apparently, asking whether the phrase "That really frosts my cookie!" means something good or bad isn't appropriate first thing in the morning. Also, telling her that she has her shirt on backwards in a store apparently isn't either. I learned lots of things this weekend. Not necessarily MZ related.

The shirt thing is a petty excuse to justify a mistake. People will laugh at you, but that shouldn't be important. Yet, it's a good thing to fix that issue. If you can't laugh about silly mistakes, then there's something wrong going on there. Blaming others for what you did on your own is a clear aggression. They still need your forgiveness so give it a go. Just tell her I forgive you.

About the shirt thing, it was more of a joke. The funny thing was that I didn't even notice until we had been to several stores. Then it was something doesn't look quite right. And I told her privately and she twirled it around in the car. But we are both old enough now that people might expect us to do things like that! Awe...look at those poor old people who can't dress themselves!

Sort of like how I clipped my own hair when she was traveling and I missed a short strip about 2" long in the back of my head. My adult daughter didn't notice it until I had already been outside in multiple stores puttering around. When I was younger, I probably would have been embarrassed. Now...meh.
Ok, got motivated, made a choice, and jumped down the rabbit hole. This afternoon I experimented with eventing a D20 type pictures bump each other sort of combat. Nothing too fancy and certainly not pretty, but it functions and I think I got all the bugs so far. Will keep playing around with this and I will post a DEMO video below shortly.

Thair is something poetically hilarious of someone being so bad at fighting, that they end up knocking out themselves instead. Anyways, good job.

Usually for a Natural 1 I would have a variety of results from dropping your weapon, to hitting an ally, to losing initiative or balance, etc. But for this I just did the simple hit yourself.

I didn't update the video, but I added a quick Evade possibility if the defender rolls a D20 and the result is higher than the D20 roll of the attacker. The D20 rolls are modified by the Attack and Defense stats so the Evade potential is small, but in testing it has already changed the result of battles.
That special moment when you go from having no motivation whatsoever to suddenly being paralyzed by indecision because you now have 5 ideas that you want to try and you can’t decide which one to invest your limited time in first! Choices!
Starting down the path of learning game developing has given me a new response to when social people ask me, the generally unsocial one, to participate in something or go somewhere. Hey, when are we going to get together to do something. Hmmm. As soon as I finish my RPG Maker game...So...never, I guess.
Here is a link to my most recent tutorial/explanation for allowing the player to place a large object anywhere on the map, as long as it will fit appropriately. This was what I was referencing in my last status update. I know it is super long, but if anyone takes the time to skim through it and you have feedback on how to do this easier and better, I would love to hear it!
That moment when you are wracking your brain, trying to figure out why something isn't working on one map when the event is completely identical and works on another map, and when you are finally ready to give up and post for help and you change one little thing that doesn't seem like it should make any difference at all...and it does. WTAF? HA!
That moment when you are finally feeling motivated to jump back in to solving problems in your project, you just barely get to start, you break something so it doesn't work, and before you can fix it, you end up spending all weekend doing chores with the Mrs. That is how you stay married after 32 years and don't end up in a hole somewhere in the back yard!
I know I'm old, but does anyone else have a problem with seeing what the heck this type of whatever it is...is? :kaoslp: Sorry, I just don't see anything in these. If I can 't hover over them to see the hint text, I have no idea what they mean. Where did these even originate? And why? For the love of whatever you hold Holy, why? Lol
Ok, got distracted again. Wanted to see if I could recreate a very old D&D item where the player could call forth a tower and enter it. So I experimented with letting the player set up a large Yurt-like dwelling anywhere on the map as long as there isn't an obstacle or they aren't too close to the edge. I will post a link to a DEMO video below. This still needs work, but it is functional.
