A mentor for me is someone who teaches you about something, but goes one step further than teachers. My music mentor taught me to play piano, music theory, composition, harmony, he took me to symphonies and operas. He sometimes come to eat with my family, etc.

He also taught me about art in general, literature, and history. He is really a human encyclopedia, as I think he studied for 16 years music at universities across the world and taught another couple years at universities and conservatoires around the world.

Probably, with the newer gens lacking tradition etc, I could see mentorship as something they consider an old practice. I had a mentor for years, a bit toxic honestly, but I learned a lot. I think mentorship is a good thing, personally.

School replace a lot of things that used to be mentorships. Now I only hear about them in the arts. There's also internships that work in a similar way to how mentorships used to be run, but you work under a company instead of a single master. I think the lack of a personal relationship is why so many internships aren't good, but it's not like mentorships of the past were all nice either.

True, educational establishments have taken many roles that mentor used to assume. And yeah, I've also only heard of mentors in the arts lol.

@SpaceBot I think a mentor can be toxic, like any parent/teacher can be toxic as well. But when you do get a truly good person as a mentor, nothing beats the experience.

Totally. He wasn't overall toxic, but had toxic traits and eventually I had to call it quits. Once someone can't practice what they preach I have a hard time believing in their integrity.

Mentors are outdated nowadays. You don't need to know anything deep, you have wikipedia and Stack overflow now. Of course it's sarcasm, but that's kind of how it is. You graduate in 26 with, in many cases, zero practical knowledge in your field of expertise. And then forget what you've learned, you're gonna learn something totally different.
