take it figuratively, like when you say "I like *insert any large group of anything*?
Just guessing here, but I feel like it's because "hate" has such a strong connotation. Hate is for when you actually want to destroy something. For casual generalizations about large, vague groups, I like to say "I'm not a fan of *insert any large group of anything*".

because the opposite word of like is dislike? not hate?
But to be honest, people tend to treat even the "love" figuratively... But say "hate" and you'll receive dozens of concrete examples, sometimes one more ridiculous than the other just "to prove a point".
