Nice!! This reminds me of Skies of Arcadia's battle system - using real, "physical" areas of effect without the need to actually move battlers around on the grid each turn nor manually aim spells. It adds a ton of depth and variability to combat. I put a ton of work into making that kind of system on GameMaker, and I love how it plays. Have you created any skills that let you shift enemies around, for example?

@Wavelength It's on the list of features. In my previous status update, I showed a video where actors were being repositioned randomly. Having skills do this kind of thing would basically need the skills to make script calls. I have a "formula effects" plugin that let's you achieve this (so damage formula first, then push/pull them back, etc). "Effects" might be cleanest approach.

That sounds alright, although personally if I were designing such a plugin, I'd want to give designers a way to shift battlers without needing code, since it's a watershed feature that can add a ton of gamesmanship and dynamism to this kind of combat system.

@Wavelength what kind of shifting around are you thinking of?

Just some pretty simple, straightforward ways for actions to move battlers (whether it's the user or target(s) of the skill. Move them up, down, left or right on the grid by a specified number of tiles if possible, using either notetags or easy commands in the formula like b.move_left(2). If you want to get a bit fancy, move them toward or away from a specified battler or a specified coordinate.

It's a bit tricky from the programmer's end when you need to move multiple battlers in a single action, but it's doable if you start with the battlers who are already furthest in the direction you intend to move everyone.

A few good examples of skills people might design in such a system: a hammer skill that knocks an enemy backward, a wind spell that blows enemies upward on the grid, a charge skill an enemy uses that brings it to the forward edge of its grid, a magnetism skill that a character uses to move toward an ally. They all could help set up, or disrupt, AoE attacks or support skills that hit multiple battlers.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
