The thing is, it's not even just artists. Everyone I try to recruit just stops replying for 3+ months. Some of them even leave the project with no notice.
consider that sometimes *life* just happens.
happened to me a while ago, I was the modeler for a space sim mod, and the coders started to report back less and less until the website just died.
we were all between 18 and 25 years old, most of us in college.
Oh, I'm perfectly aware of life happening, but you gotta be professional and let people know. And when it's the majority of your team ghosting you for no reason, that's something different than life.
I've noticed that a lot of people... act as if every single person out there is a psychologist, and a telepathic, and knows exactly why they do what they do. XD
It's not that they don't tell you. They think they've given you enough information already for you understand their actions.
And this why I never recommend working as a team, on a game (or any long term project), with strangers.
Maybe because most people who want to sit in front of a computer screen looking at code or pixels for a hobby are introverts and aren't the exactly social butterflies to begin with.
Add to that maybe they are like me, who thought of joining a team after being discouraged that their own projects bomb, but unlike me didn't think better of it and realize that if they'll flake on their own passion project they'll doubly flake on someone else's as well?
