I've heard that people in some places have also gotten sued by the very people they tried to help. I would help somebody in danger or getting attacked in front of me, but I've been in rough tussles, and I'm pretty sure I can get a decent lawyer among people I know - can't say the same for others, though, and there's always a complainer somewhere who will try to make it sound easy.
I have been on the receiving end of such a situation - doesn't make you feel like you want to help again.
Also, I don't think what you describe warrants to make one a hero and it kinda is sad we live in a world where it does . But enought of that depressive thought xD
I agree ppl should intervene more, tho I would also advocate to use ones common sense and not try if it puts themselves at to much of a risk
Speaking from experience...Finnuval is right. I have a single criminal conviction on an otherwise clean record, I do not have so much as a traffic ticket to my name, but I got charged with aggravated assault for trying to stop someone being assaulted outside of a restaurant....turns out they were husband and wife, and she falsely claimed that I was the one who assaulted her once the cops got there.
It is sad and it is not how it should be in a perfect world, but American dad's psa is right for the world we live in and the laws as they exist in most developed nations:
Law is not Law if it inhibits someone's ability to aid the innocent...
The world would be alot better if law enforcement were more receptive to letting "Civilians" get involved. If "Professionals" are fine with putting themselves on the line to help improve, what difference should it be if it were your "Average Citizen" who did it?
in many places, people will not "stand by" as much as they will "stand out of the way" of the professionals meant to take care of it.
@Mystic_Enigma in some cases the government has a procedure to take care of any first responders that get injured. Any problems and their solution are part of the system.
anyone outside the system, is unpredictable.
@gstv87 as true as that is, unfortunately in as many places the law seemingly protects criminals more then it does the victims or those that try and help
@Mystic_Enigma it isn't a just law, but it is still law and it will be enforced whether the people enforcing it know it's wrong or not (for instance the police who arrested me that night confided that that couple was known, that they knew I didn't attack her, but in the face of physical evidence and witness testimony I was screwed anyway, their past history wasn't admissible at my trial)
