Up to you. If you do, you give the player more freedom and you can have all your text that refers to the main character print their name with the \n command, however they won't really remember the character later on because they don't have a solidified name.
If you don't, there is less freedom for the player to give them their own identity, however you can do that for them and create a truly amazing character that will be referred to by name in conversation.
Personal preference here, but I would have a default name but still give them the choice to REname him/her if the player wants. As long as you use the \n command it will read the name used, whether default or custom.
