What tutorials are you using to learn? I find it easier to learn using a tutorial vs. just trying to go into it feet first.

I was using Final boss Blue's tutorial. And then I went into Deviant Art to see what I could use. How frustrating!

As a 3D modeler, I can truly say that spriting is potentially the most difficult task I've ever been presented.
