Pretty sure Starbound has similar numbers in that regard... Hooray for random seed generation?

...just remember it will take up more space, the more you explore.

Starbound is still Early Access and looks way less impressive than this game.

I was just pointing out it's not the first. Whatever.

And I'm just pointing out that this one looks impressive, I think you and me misunderstand each other often here. :p

Actually, you were pointing out how much LESS impressive Starbound looks. And that it was Early Access. Which are both complete unrelated to procedural generation and number of planets.

That aside, a somewhat-explored Starbound planet map can take up ~50mb. This will probably take up more.

Starbound has been EA for years and it's still unfinished sadly.

I don't care about graphics but it's still amazing to have such a good looking game taking only 6GB of space, this is what I meant.

Maybe because they forgot colour variation has advanced slightly from the 70s, and who needs fancy graphics when you can just blur and bloom filter anyway? ;)

Seriously, I can see the appeal (I just don't share it), and it really is nice to see game creators actually making an attempt to optimize file sizes. You don't even see that HERE often, and that scares me more than a little. "My 2-hour game is 3gb? Meh, whatever. Everyone has fast internet anyway."

Semi-unrelated but Starbound is finally coming out next week :)

I'll get No Mans Sky if it reviews semi-well and looks like an enjoyable game.

It's procedural generation. Not a single planet is stored in memory or on your hard drive. This also means that persistence will be limited. Consider Elite Dangerous with 8 billion + landable planets that are up to 300 times larger than the earth, persistent with multiplayer and all of it traversable taking up only ~23gb (different art style and higher resolution textures and more sound effects + voices being the reason). It's not really new ground, but in both cases impressive tech.

18 quintillion!? That's about 16 and a half quintillion too many for me to explore! I haven't seen that much exploration in a game since Burger Time!

I'd bite that too, but I'd be afraid it would bite back or something would be hiding in there. :D

Yep! It's John Candy in that old movie, Uncle Buck! It's a good watch.

And I'm suddenly hungry for pizza. That's a boss pizza right there. That's enough to feed almost...3 guys on a football team!

Check it out! I think they finally killed Godzilla! You want some!?
