I can't stay much longer, but I will point out that the best way to learn about another group is just to ask them. I AM ALWAYS open to answering question about being a gay man.
@overlordmikey Yeah, that's the one. Unless sexuality is important to the discussion\events at hand, then it shouldn't really matter. Another decent gay character was Specialist Traynor in Mass Effect 3. The only time she mentions being gay is if you (should you play as male Shepherd) hit on her.
@The Stranger I don't always agree with that. For a gay person for example - being gay is SUPER important to who they are. My life has been greatly effected by my sexuality.
@overlordmikey It just seems very awkward and unnatural to me if random NPCs have dialogue options relating to them being gay; without a reason for it, that is. It's easier to make gay characters who are part of the main cast (even if they're just very important NPCs), though. Haven't played Persona 5, so I have no idea what went on in that game.
Side note: I have always interpreted Sabin from FFVI as a gay man. He actually greatly conforms to a type of gay man known as a bear. I've gotten flack for this because it's not directly stated - that's how it is to be gay.
@TheoAllen Hey don't worry. Diversity may be important yes, but as long as you consider that in the future you don't have to rush out and force us in now - that would just make the game messy.
@overlordmikey Would it be a super important thing if it were the norm, and had always been the norm? Being straight isn't mentioned in passing, because it's considered the status quo. The sexuality of someone is not even a thought for the most part, because it's not worth considering unless you need to. I'm not going to attempt to speak on behalf of everyone, though.
Okay before I go (since I gotta get going) I'll send both of you (@TheoAllen and @The Stranger) the video I mentioned since I think it's very educational.
@The Stranger in a fantasy world full of dragons, elves, and monsters or a sc-fi world - why would being LGBTQ+ be seen as not the status quo? Remember that YOU create these worlds?
@overlordmikey It all depends on the type of society the story takes place in. If magic is common (especially that whole polymorph stuff), then there would be no real reason for anything to be out of the norm. So, I am in full agreement with you there. :) This is partly why the trans woman in that DLC felt so out of place. The setting she exists within makes being trans fairly ordinary.
@overlordmikey I understand that there's a big disconnect between us, living here on Earth, and the more alien fantasy settings (ones which don't adhere to our cultures, beliefs, etc), but I think that consistency is far more important than tokenism. If being gay, trans and what not is not uncommon in a society, then why make it stand out? .
@The Stranger I'll be honest - I think you may be over thinking thing just a little. I mean that is a GOOD thing - it means ya care, but with LGBTQ+ minor NPCs just think of them as the same as straight minor NPCs.
@The Stranger The difference comes from who they are romantically interested in... Trans People are harder - I'm not trans so I can't help you there - I have Trans Friends, but I'm not them so...
@overlordmikey That's how I do see them, though. :) I don't think about the sexuality or gender of random minor NPCs at all, just as I don't think about these things when I look at others in reality. I'm not the sort of person who walks by a character in a game and wonders if he\she is gay. That's only ever something I need to consider if I am attracted to that person, and plan on trying to hook up with them
@Amy Pond The boob plate armor is a trope in itself! More common than the crystals. :D
@overlordmikey I'd like to see more gay characters written by gay developers. They'd probably handle it better than someone without real understanding, because if gay characters are inserted just for demographic appeal, they'd end up contrived IMO.
@starlight dream you can tell Dorian from DA:I was written by a gay dude because even straight men wanted to date him. He was just that dashing and awesome.
But the mainstream industry is still often a straight cis man's game. :(
@The Stranger the problem is more that in most games when an NPC has any interaction about themselves for that subject - it's about them being straight. It wouldn't hurt to sometimes have the dudes next door casually mention their parents keep them apart ya know.
@The Stranger As a gay guy I will note that I usually just have two dudes who live together, share a bed, maybe even raising a kid. Visual cues like that can work wonders.
