Don't make Metal Gear Solid style cutscenes. It's fine to have stretches of gameplay in which you're not fighting stuff, but the player should always have something to do. Think of ways to include the player in these story segments.
Depends on your definition of "long" and the type of game. My problem with long cutscenes is when little story advancement is going on, and they're too long for no reason.
This would probably be better in a thread in 'General Discussion'. Status Updates doesn't allow for detailed discussion and a lot of people will not see it when it goes off the front page.
