Yeah... that happens to me to. Sometimes I'm kind of a jerk about it and I don't teach them everything I did with mine, but I usually feel bad and end up teaching everything to them.

But that's exactly the opposite. I try to keep the best ideas to myself to my own project, and give the most boring or in my opinion weakest ideas, but those always turn out better, than my complex ones.

I used to experience that during my days in high school a lot. Like I'd help someone out with homework or with some task in class and they'd end up getting a better grade on that assignment then boast about it to me.
