@Poryg : Take the RTP music and change the tempo to 125 or 75 (and sometimes 120 or 105 works too). It's hardly recognizable then. I use a few RTP tracks at those tempos for that reason.
Here's a level from a little puzzle game I made in RPGMaker to demonstrate, the music is one of the themes at tempo 50. I forget which theme though (its 1 or 4 though): https://youtu.be/mctnmJ9-7rc
A lot also depends on your audience. If your games are likely to be played by more RM enthusiasts, then many of them will recognize RTP music and assets. But a game tailored for an average gamer, they might not recognize it at all. RTP music might be a little too risky, but say music from store packs is a perfectly good option to go for.
From my experience, 99.9% of players have no preference whether your music tracks are custom-made or are royalty-free tracks you got from store packs or external websites, so long as the track is 1) nice on the ears, and 2) not too overused in other media.
Another thing, similar to changing tempo in RTP music, doing small edits on RTP graphics can have the same effect, even if it's a simple recolour or frankenspriting. Changing some lighting effects and using the clumping method when mapping also has a very positive effect with simple RTP graphics.
It just a huge IF a developer wont use RTP just because it's RTP, refuse to listen to the music, looking at the graphic, or even try to edit it, and eventually forgot the potential
An example. Does anyone still using RTP VX music though. I wonder if I put one, no one gonna suspect it's RTP because it's "forgotten". Rather than develop using VX, why not Ace, or MV?
Yeah, VX RTP music is unique, so it can be forgotten easily. VXAce music is the remaster of 2000 and XP though, so that has the greatest chance of being known. Nevertheless, 2003 has a pack of some little known music.
Although it's true that dlc aren't much different from rtp in principle. Overused dlc get recognized too.
However, remember you couldn't legally own 2000 outside of Japan until sometime in the last couple years. So even if it is a remaster, it would only be known to those who play a lot of RPGMaker games, or those who illegally owned 2000 before it was sold outside Japan.
However, on that note, you should probably avoid Battle 1 from ACE. That is the common one used in those make an RPG quickly for a $ or $$ games on Steam, as that is the default battle theme.
I find the default menu sounds can also be very jarring. If you can only change some sound fx in your game, it should be the menu ones. The amount of default Cursor, Cancel, and Decision sounds I've heard now instantly raises a red alert whenever I hear it, and yet that stuff is so easy to change.
