If a game is primarily combat driven and you suddenly have a stealth section... That's probably your problem. I know I had lots of issues in Ocarina of Time with the one and only "stealth section" in the game. Not that it was difficult, but I really just freakin' hated it. It slowed the whole game down for a silly mechanic.

Forced stealth sections tend not to sit well with people.

Bb-but.... :(

If you like your stealth system, I suggest saving it for a stealth-based game. Or, using it a lot more frequently in your current work. Otherwise, it is going to feel out of place and is going to annoy players who signed on to your game for the 90% of the game that isn't stealth based.

ladies and gents, I think we all learned an important lesson here. never implement a game mechanic before researching to see if folk think it sucks or not.

Sorry, they just break up the pace WAY too much!

Perhaps I haven't experienced any of these terrible stealth sections yet.

You haven't? Let me recommend some :D Ocarina of Time has one. Resident Evil 6 has one when you unlock Ada's campaign. Chrono Trigger has one in the future when you traverse the sewers. It has another when you're breaking out of jail. Resident Evil 6 also has another stealth section when you're playing as the little girl and Wesker's Son. :D

I didn't mind those in CT. Maybe the other 2 will convince me that stealth sucks if I try them out.^^

The ones in CT are "optional" at the very least. You can just "Brute Force" your way through them. I did. The Ada one... you can "brute force" as well, but there's an achievement for doing it entirely with stealth. The other ones though? Not optional. They're forced. :D

@starlight dream Stealth doesn't suck (I'm a big stealth fan), but stealth in a non-stealth game tends to be bad. Forced stealth sections in non-stealth games tend to be poorly implemented, and aren't what the target audience of that game want. It's even worse if failing the stealth section results in a game over.

I see what you guys mean. If it's impossible to survive if detected, then the level doesn't fit with the rest of the game's mechanics. It slows the game down (by forcing restarts) for no reason.

Bottom line: expect stealth in my rpg :p j/k

@Tai_MT Do you like playing thieves? Just curious for my non-clinical study of rpg gamers and their stealth opinion.

It depends on the type of game. If I'm playing "solo", I more often gravitate towards sneaky thiefy stabby arrowy guys (like Skyrim). Though, sometimes, I just go full Warrior and beat everything to death with the biggest weapon I can. If I'm playing a cooperative or MMO type RPG, I like to play "support that nobody plays". Paladins, Healers, CC characters, stuff of that nature.

Exactly! :) Either make stealth a viable option throughout the game, or just don't bother with it at all.
