What do you mean by episodic quests?
@The Stranger Like, each adventure/dungeon lead-up is its own dedicated story arc. My problem is that I don't know how to make each adventure relevant to the heroes, while also leading up to a satisfying final dungeon romp that ties up the plot.
Oh! I get you now. Personally, I'd tie each of these sub-plots to either some aspect of the character's backstory, to their main motivation for engaging with the main plot, or to overcoming some sort of major weakness or fear. Once completed, the character would be changed in some way, but more ready to take on the final challenge.
Definitely! It seems simple, but I find that a lot of my game-making relies on stats rather than the story itself. Am looking into a few games I thought did plotting well for ideas (the first Ace Attorney, for one~ XD).
So, your game relies more on gear, stats, and fighting? You could always go for the old finding the shards of a powerful weapon, or collecting a bunch of ancient relics.
