I love the look of your game. Is the inventory something you did too? Or is that a plugin that can be downloaded from somewhere? I've been looking for an adventure style inventory for a while and your game looks pretty darn close to what I was looking for. :) Thanks.
If you do the resize in that order you may lose quality from your tile. Try increasing the size by 300% to a 96x96 tile then reducing by 50%. When you go down to 16x16, you have lost 75% of your pixel data. But when you increase it first, you still retain all of the pixel data for the reduction.
