Hey there!

I purchased RPG Maker 2000. I know that assets from the RTP may freely be used in non-RPG Maker commercial projects, but I have a question regarding some specifics.

My game will have a purchaseable soundtrack released. It is mostly original songs but there were some RTP songs I wanted to include in the game, so I want to know if people allowed to include the RTP themes as part of a soundtrack. The songs in question are modified a bit (ran through a soundfont.) The soundtrack's pretty massive and the RTP tracks would be in the minority.

Thanks so much for your time :)

You're free to use as long as you have the license for the particular maker.

Thank you for answering! I know it's allowed for video game projects, but I never saw any mention of if it was allowed to put the tracks on a commercially released soundtrack for the game.

I'd like to get a staff response on the subject to confirm.

Either you misquoted something, or you got it completely wrong.
Any RTP-resources from any Maker can only be used in other makers from Degica, and only if you own both makers (the maker the RTP is from and the maker you're using it in).

But that is exclusively for the RPG-Makers from Enterbrain/Degica.

All RM-RTP is specifically limited to RM and must never be used in any non-RM program.

That is the reason why some store packs have a non-RM-licence at https://gamedevfort.com/store

(which is more expensive than the regular RM-License)

However, as long as you stay within the RPG Maker series, all RTP can be used and edited royality-free for both commercial and non-commercial game projects.

EDIT; ninja'd

No, you wouldn't be able to resell the songs in a soundtrack.  It's not uncommon for a soundtrack to not actually have every song used.  You should just stick to the original music.

Ah, understood. I guess I misinterpreted something I read either on the indie game making contest site or somewhere on these forums. Thank you for the clarification.

That said, is there a way to purchase a license to use RTP assets in non-Degica makers?

not that anyone knows of - it has been asked before.

I assume that the original licences for the RTP in Japan limit the use to RM only, and Enterbrain isn't interested in paying the artists more to promote other engines...

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
