So, after playing lots of hours of TF2 (120hs, exactly) and watching the first bit of a FFVII longplay, I had this thought:

"Is it a good idea to put 3D Models as sprites in a 2D RPG Maker game?"

I don't know if this can be or was already made by a indie dev, it sounds too crazy to be applied in the indie game scenario.

But if you guys can help me with this idea, then your suggestions are welcome.  :)

Pretty sure that would work just fine. Pretty sure that's exactly what the High Fantasy resource pack characters/monsters are.

You'd just need to animate the 3D models and break the movement down into a spritesheet. So it would be pretty easy to use inside the engine.

I already thought about something like this since I've spend some time in the 3D area of gamemaking.

You can use the High Fantasy Resource Pack. It's got some amazing 3D resources.Characters, battlers etc.All you need!It also has an SBS script with a lot of SBS battlers.

Keep in mind, you have to pay for it (I have a licence,it's expensive).

Both of you two are talking about the High Fantasy Resource Pack which brings pre-made 3D assets to use as sprites as well as pre-made SBS scripts. However, I want to make my OWN 3D Models, since I want for my game to be "A Original Game" and not "Just Another RPG Maker Game" (thank you Echo607 for teaching me this term).

yep, I thought of something like that.

I think Blender is a good option to do models. Do you agree with me?

@gmestanley

Since Blender is free and I have used Blender a lot I think yes, at least for modelling purpose I can say if you want to stay with low poly blender is awesome. Getting into is a little tough through and I'd advise to ALWAYS use button shortcuts, just learn those. ;)   I haven't much experience with animating, but blender should handle that well, too!

@gmestanley To be perfectly fair, you asked if it was possible. I cited a (probable - I didn't know for sure) current example. I did not make a suggestion that you use it.

I remember a Japanese sci-fi RM game that used 3D assets as paralax.

It has been 5 years since i've touched any 3D programs but It is possible, all you need is to get the render of the model.

If you want to make your own models, then obviously you need to learn.3D is possible,so the question is answered.

I think.

You save them as static sprites.

In the early days say like Final Fantasy 7-9 models were essentially 2D sprites but could quickly switch to an actual 3D model if needed.

In whatever program you use simply save the sprites in the 4-8 directions and create a spritesheet.

*easiest way to go about it.

Otherwise you're going to need to bring in a 3D library and not sure HOW WELL RPG Maker MV will handel that.

But if you're after making a game like FF7 (visually anyway) you CAN do this with MV but it'll be work...

You will also have to completely re-write the camera.

You can basically just go into Blender (if you want to spend money on a program, 3ds Max is a good one [has nothing to do with the handheld system or nintendo just fyi]) and export a character model for each of the "slots" on a sprite sheat (left, left walking, right, ect. ect.)

The idea of using 3d to make assets for an RM game is even easy when you talk about static objects that do not animate such as buildings or whatever as you would only need to make a few edits to make it look right in the game.

I don't know of any RPG examples of games to do this but it certainly works.

For instance, Donkey Kong Country does this.

As for how to actually execute it, I don't know.

However, the more detailed the sprite is, the choppier the default 3-frame walking animation will look. You'll probably want to use a plugin/script to modify the animations.

Yay, now back in action Happy Christmas time, coming back!

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? So I was playing with filters and this looked interesting...

Kind of gives a very different feel. :LZSexcite:
To whom ever person or persons who re-did the DS/DS+ asset packs for MV (as in, they are all 48x48, and not just x2 the pixel scale) .... THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!! XwwwwX
