Work in progress. Not all sprites and maps have been edited.

Game contains some sexual themes and some swearing.

STORYLINE/PLOT

The nymph Elliandra (Ellie for short) was born on the brightest day of the year, during the sun festival, the first time it had happened as far back as anyone could remember. Whispers of great deeds to be expected filled the ancient forest of Fallhana, but instead she turned out to be the most useless nymph in generations (the queen’s words).

Turning 17 she left her home forest to study in the human lands, as is custom. At her side, her loyal (and bitter) guardian, the great telepathic direwolf Arrlak. The human city, with all its culture, clothes, parties and boys turned out to be a heaven for young Ellie, but a hell for Arrlak, who had to fight a never-ending horde of overeager suitors and be driven into endless arguments about home coming times, waste of coin and a lack of focus on schoolwork (and worst of all, there were no bunnies to hunt in the city).

Arriving late at the start of the semester, Ellie was put in the only study group that still had room left for more people, the one with the two most unpopular students of her class. That’s how she met Tessa, the kind girl with a facial disfiguration from a small neighboring country and Sam, the son of a wealthy merchant, an incel and an excessive hoarder of pornographic drawings. At the city Ellie also met her current girlfriend Cassia, a national of the hostile Armstein, who was fleeing repression.

Ignoring Arrlak’s warnings, it didn’t take too long for trouble to find Ellie. Narrowly avoiding expulsion, she and her friends had to take on a strange assignment from one of their professors. On the way to fulfilling this mysterious punishment they decided to visit Ellie’s home forest. Something is brewing in the forest, its guardians restless and turning hostile. Can the four friends uncover the reason for this unrest? And more importantly, can Ellie protect her exotic girlfriend Cassia from the lustful and insatiable inhabitants of the forest (or will she even try)?

CHARACTERS
Ellie
A summer nymph. Bright and carefree, naturally good natured. Bonded to Arrlak, a telepathic direwolf (a strange pairing). Loves parties and sex. Not the jealous type (willing to share her girlfriend with all her hot “cousins”).

Arrlak [some edits to color/lighting to come]
An intelligent telepathic direwolf from the frigid Riepass mountains. Hailing from a harsh land he has had trouble adjusting to Ellie’s carefree ways. Although he loves his ward, the task of raising Ellie and being separated from his homeland has made him somewhat bitter.

Tessa
A girl with a facial disfiguration from a coastal village from a small neighboring country. Practices a strange old healing art passed down as tradition in her village. A good student with a sharp mind, she received a stipend to study at the Royal University in Parne. Having endured a lot of bullying earlier, she finds Ellie’s natural and relaxed attitude towards her refreshing.

Cassia
A national of the belligerent Armstein Empire. An orphan, who was raised and trained in one of the military schools. Escaped and fled into exile after a girl in her unit – who she had exchanged looks with - was beaten and brutalized when it was found out they liked women in a romantical way. Ellie’s current girlfriend. Her introverted personality balances Ellie’s energy.

Sam
A son of a merchant from Parne. An incel with a massive porn collection (drawings on paper and pages ripped from anatomy books). Intelligent but self-centred and resentful. Eagerly awaits meeting Ellie’s hot cousins.

SYNOPSIS
Okay, this is my first hobby project I've been working on. It is "episode 1" but it is a self contained silly story (with some serious themes) that I wrote using some ideas I've had in my head for a while. The game is set in a fantasy world, that has a technology rating around year 1750 (with less firearms and some anachronistic elements). It is story heavy, so if you like exploration like Breath of the Wild or great combat, it's probably not a game for you. Actually the whole gameplay is mostly different kind of minigames I've been working on. I removed combat entirely (though there will be a couple of combat-like minigames) from this 1st introductory episode. This is just a hobby project so I will mostly just try out different things with the minigames. I've been thinking of having different minigames for each path to main areas. They will range from an "evade on map enemies"-type of game, a silly mobile game clone, a short adventure game segment with inventory to some kind of magic battle etc

That mapping looks incredible! Colors are so striking. Is that parallax or just tiling?

I updated short character intros in the opening post.

Also, Arrlak got his character portrait (some coloring/lighting maybe needs to be done to match better with humans).

Very Unique! Usually i don't like super large portraits, but with such vibrant colored parallax mapping in the background it gives this nice Visual Novel feel, and the sprites play a more secondary role in a fitting way, i can't explain it but your project is REALLY easy on the eyes!

Thanks! My game is so story/character focused, that I was aiming for some type of "semi visual novel" feel. I'm still going to edit at least the main character sprites (and at least clothing on some NPCs), but I'll keep the RPG Maker MZ sprite size/style.

Well, I could also give a status update on the progress of this game/episode:

-story 100%
-dialogue 80%
-maps 80%
-minigames <40%
-art <40%
-music 0%

I took a whole month off development in December, but this last 7 days surprised myself and managed to event some silly minigames and write some more missing dialogue. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up at least part of that pace. Anyway, getting all the art is going to still take time, so I guess I'm in no big hurry. 3 out of the 6 minigames are kind of finished.

Below is some more NPC art:

The mapping immediately caught my attention but the project looks well thought out too. Good luck! :)

tsk, we all know lesbians are (U), not (G), lesbos is an island, not a forest : P

writing looks good which is surprisingly rare around RM games

Thanks! I didn't do it myself though, one dude did it for me. It's parallax with a lighting layer.

um...you wanna maybe...credit the "one dude" who did all your maps for you? seems kinda like the decent thing to do
now for some nitpicks:
  • too many of the trees are vertically aligned with trees they stand next to or overlap, making some straight lines that look a little awkward.
  • the title and episode text in the first/main screenshot are almost completely illegible against that backdrop.
  • the spacing of the dialogue is a bit awkward
  • is this set in a world where swans are larger than people? because that swan is plainly bigger than any of the RTP charsets and that's rather distracting

Thanks for the replies!

@Quexp "Well thought out", I don't know about that :D This is me putting some character ideas on "paper" (well game), upping the comedy side of things and messing around with RPG maker. But thanks!

@TheGentlemanLoser I notice now what you mean by the vertical tree lines. I'll have to think whether to try and fix it or leave it as a number of small "imperfections". The swan indeed looks big (though not monstrous big to my eyes), I'll scale the sprite smaller. Regarding the "Title-text" I just quickly put something over one of my screenshots, when I thought it was some kind of a "rule" that the first pic should be the title screen (which that isn't). And if by "spacing of dialogue" you mean that in those screenshots the characters seem to be giving some kind of "short monologues", most of those are edited dialogues from the actual game, meant to act as sort of "character introductions" in those screenshots. If you mean the font or whatever, I'll have to look into the fonts in the future (argh, another thing to think about!). Also, I had thought people are usually credited in the released product. Anyway, I'll have to ask the dude if and how he'd like to be credited.

Good to hear that the writing seems decent. I'm generally satisfied enough with it. Particularly considering English isn't my native language and even in my native language I scored the second lowest grade in our final exams :D One thing I'll never learn though is the proper English sentence structure and weird punctuation.

English is in many ways an infuriatingly stupid language: I never would have guessed you weren't a native speaker from your writing, so color me impressed.

Also, I had thought people are usually credited in the released product. Anyway, I'll have to ask the dude if and how he'd like to be credited.

considering that like .001% of projects developed around the RM scene ever get finished and released (I am exaggerating of course but...sadly not by much!) giving credit for WIPs could generally be considered a best practice

Game is slowly proceeding. Received some more assets and going to start working on the (very) short "adventure game" segment soon.

Below is a short, unedited clip without music from the beginning of the game. I'll maybe remove the "narrated character intros" from the beginning, not sure yet. Also going to get an "angry expression" for Arrlak.

EDIT: Video is just a short sketch. Since posting, have already changed dialogue and the intros and the order of a lot of things :D
