SECTION A: SYNOPSIS

  • A Royal pain is around a two hour game that I did, learning how to use the RPG Maker VX Ace engine. I started it in 2015, but then lost it when my computer crashed. After getting a new computer, I found the game on Dropbox and decided to boot it up. I attempted to balance the game as it was horribly unbalanced. Boss fights could wipe you out, no problem. Boss fights should now provide a modicum of difficulty, but normal enemies will only provide a nuisance with the occasional poison. I don't know how to include the rtp, but people with VX Ace should be able to play this game. It's not the greatest, but maybe new owners of VX Ace can get a slight idea of what the system can do. I know there are a few errors, and I have tried to correct some of them, but others were beyond my knowledge. So hopefully this game will at least be enjoyable for the small amount of time it takes to play. Just to be aware, I am rating this game PG-13 for some language and only extremely slightly suggestive content.

SECTION C: STORYLINE/PLOT

  • The kingdom of Hynedale is a small and peaceful island kingdom. This island kingdom is currently ruled over by the kind and just King Gregory. In hopes to prepare his son and heir for his coming time to rule, King Gregory sends Prince Richard to Larcel Village for the yearly inspections, a boring and tedious yet necessary task required to learn how to rule. The young Princess Natalie, wanting to see the village and spend time with her older brother, accompanies him on his journey to the small village. While in the village, the Elder informs the royal group of a recent bit of loud commotion happening in the nearby mountains. He believes that it portends bad times ahead. After finishing his work in the village of Larcel, the prince and princess return home to Hynedale. Shortly after their return, that same night, the unthinkable has happened. One of the royal guards, Wilhelm, has disregarded his duties and turned on the king and queen, murdering them for his own personal gain. In hopes to solidify his grab at power, Wilhelm holds Princess Natalie hostage. Terence, the captain of the royal guard, in hopes to save the kingdom and preserve the royal line, aids Prince Richard in his escape of Hynedale castle. Terence escorts Richard back to Larcel Village. There they wait, gathering their strength and planning their next move to save the trapped princess. There, the Elder informs the two of the rumor of a mysterious warrior that slumbers in the castle to the north. Now, the prince and his Captain of the Guard, must track down this warrior and recruit them to his cause. It will take more than a small group of three to save his sister, and his kingdom, from Wilhelm's and his mercenaries' clutches. The group will need all the help that they can get, be it perhaps by recruiting the Elves that live in the west, if he can gain their trust, or maybe they can get to the rebellion that is being formed by the former Royal Guards. The question remains, can he pull it off, or is this the end of this royal line's reign of power?

@magnaangemon01 Hello I tried the game but the download link only provides the game launch exe at the moment and that alone isn't enough to run the game, you will need to include everything in that same folder for someone to play it.

I'm writing this as I'm playing your game.

You need to use the tools provided with rpg maker more, like text timing, different soundtracks for when indoors, variables (one thing i noted you could have added was a different dialogue with Richard, his sister wasn't in the party and she still appeared in the dialogue. You can add a variable to change what happens if a party member is or is not in the party).
Something I'd find interesting is the old dude by the lake in the second town saying something different when you visit that town for a second time, not just a *grumble*.
Personally I'm not a fan of random encounters, it unbalances the game most of the time s (and to people like me, it can bore the hell out of us). Also, it took me while to find out I could escape from battle, I accidentaly pressed left and saw the escape option.
If I'm not mistaken the boss battle with the demon lord had the same battle bgm as the other battles, you should change it.
DO NOT make someone go back through a dungeon with random encounters.
There's a glitch in the forest where you keep teleporting backwards to the chest. You didn't need to make an event to teleport if the map is set to repeat itself (unless there's a reason for it and I didn't see it).
There's a glitch in the final boss where I had to play through the project (not the .exe). The door opens but you can't get through. That final boss was almost impossible to beat, took me at least 10 minutes. It wouldn't be a problem if that final battle wasn't so repetitive.


Now the good things.

Considering it is your first rpg:
Nice story, good diversity of characters. They felt unique and different from each other. Sadly the Elf and the Thief didn't get much dialogue. My tip for you on story is to develop the characters more, they are the soul of your game.
Not much can be said about mapping, you used mostly sample maps hehe.
Again, discover the tool you have in your hands (RPG Maker) more.
Play your whole game lots of times. It's the best thing you can do to find things that are off and that can be enhanced (also bugs).
Play other people's games (that's what I'm doing now, took a break off the development of my first game as well), It will help inspire you.
Lastly but probably the most important. Ask for your friends' honest opinion. I'll tell you in advance, not everyone of your friends will play your game if you ask them to, but it doesn't harm you to try it.

Good job for a first game, I hope you took the first part of this message lightly, I'm a bit blunt sometimes. May you develop many more games!

Mapping is a weakness of mine.

I'm still learning how to balance the game. It was way unbalanced before to the point it was unbeatable.

As for party member talking without being in the party, where did this happen? I played the game a couple dozen times and never ran into that.

It was at the beginning, second floor of the castle I think. Richard's sister left the party, you talk to a woman and the dialogue goes as if she's still in the party.

Ah. I always went straight to Richard's room after that. It never occurred to me that it could still happen. I just have to give the Governess a second page and self-switch to it to disappear when your sister leaves the party.

I've played this game up to a certain part of the story where I couldn't continue, and I've written my thoughts as I played this game directly into notepad, so I will cut them up into different bits so you can go through it at your leisure! :kaopride:

Things I find enjoyable:
  • I genuinely like the mapping! It's so big and it feels like there's so much to explore!
  • The way you make the water flow to the lakes in some towns is nice, it shows you give thought to where everything flows. :kaoluv:
  • The battle needing a bit of strategy is good! I like figuring out enemy weaknesses! :kaopride:
  • I really like how Isabelle works in the party early on, because she doesn't have any MP, and her introduction to the party works like a subtle battle tutorial because the rest of the party introduced in the future doesn't use magic as well.
  • The letter from the elder with the scrolling gives a nice effect, I like it.
  • I am so thankful of the team composition. :kaocry:
    Richard has a lot of flexibility with his elemental buffs, Terence is both the healer and tank, while Isabelle just deals mad damage quickly. Very good thought on this.
    The next party composition works well too! I had fun fighting and figuring out which strategy works best depending on my party members!
    Then again battling is my favorite part, so hahaha! I find the bosses fun to fight too! :kaojoy:

Here are some small bugs I found!
Aside from the very last point in the list, they aren't major enough to affect my playthrough, just things I noticed.
  • Had to google and download RPGVXAce RTP to run this game, but that's fine.
  • Pixel of this man changed when I talk to him from the left, but he looks fine if I talk to him from the right side of the bed though. It's just a minor thing I find funny.

  • When Terence did his Starlight magic skill, I noticed the skill says something in Japanese?:kaomad2: Is that what it supposed to do?

  • "Deals defense ignoring damage to one enemy"? Is it the other way around?

  • I've beaten the masked Mercenary Captain and can see the sister and someone else is in her room, but I cannot get through the door for some reason. Is this a bug or is this meant to happen? Well in the meantime, I will be pausing this game until you tell me what to do!:kaocry:

These are my thoughts story-wise as I played the game! I typed this as I played, so it's very chaotic :kaothx:
Spoilers abound!
  • The introduction was light-hearted and easy enough to understand, and you've established the uneasiness of the town folk well by the many mercenaries stationed everywhere.
  • Haha when the old man was saying I should "blow the butterfly", I really thought I should use Richard's Wind skill to the butterfly in the middle of the lake :kaoblush:
  • OH NOOO Uncle....... :kaodes:
  • TERENCE COULDN'T BE TRUSTED???? WHY?? :kaomad2:
  • sobs Terence left and now I worry of who's gonna tank and heal BUT IT IS FINE, we got BRENDA
  • ok brenda is a much needed party member, we went from turtling team to aggressive team and kill first before we get killed. I swapped the Talisman of Light between Brenda and Richard on whoever needs heals the most lmao, I'm glad I found a duplicate of that item for Isabelle too :kaosalute: I mostly let Brenda equip the thing, because at least Richard has higher DEF haha
  • Ah nvm I found the 3rd Talisman of Light, NOW WE'RE DECKED :kaopride:
  • TERENCE REALLY IS A TRAITOR, OH NO! :kaodes:
  • Oh now we get Eric the Thief! Nice! I wish I can get to know him more, but I understand since this was a project you've made back then and recontinued after your computer crashed!
  • Hmm I'm trying to find the "cave slightly west of here" the guard(?? captain??) says but I can't find it :kaoswt:
  • OH I can enter the FORESTS just east of the castle right across the river, I see.
    Now that I've entered it, I know there's a cave inside the Forest, but from the map overview, it might confuse the player as they will try to find any cave-like structures instead of entering the Forest area beside the castle.
  • You're really good with making maze-like maps! I'm impressed.
  • TERENCE IS IN THE FOREST CAVE! :kaomad3: ...Oh wow, he's been hatching this plan for 10 years, now that's dedication. Was hoping his life with the king was at least better than his previous life, but I suppose even a better life would mean nothing if you've closed your heart :kaocry:
  • OH NO THE CITY IS BURNING :kaolivid:
  • :kaoeh:I want to save Natalie but I can't get through the door ;-;

Overall, nice game for your first time. The battle parts are my favorite!
The maze maps also impressed me! I hope I get to see the ending soon!

Imma gonna play it, haven't played any new RPG in a long time. Who am I kidding, the only RPG's I played were pokemon, deltarune, undertale and fan-made stuff...
anyways it sounds nice so far, i think that tomorrow i will write a review.

@sy020 I can't take credit for the maps; they were all samples.
As for that last door, look through the castle first floor. Should be a gold chest with the key to that door.
Also, I could not figure out what was going on with that sprite of the guard. I checked scripts and everything.

Unfortunately, though, I will not be fixing anything in the game. That game was only made for me to learn the software. The next game I make will be even bigger.

A minor suggestion, but can you add a text when Richard checks the door where he says the door is locked and he needs a key? I think it will be clearer that way! :kaoluv:

Now for the final boss battle rant, oh my gosh, I need to share this with you!
  • I FOUND THE SEPHIROTH-LOOKINASS! :kaoangry: HEY BUDDY SQUARE UP
  • THIS BOSS BATTLE MUSIC GOES SO HARD, I will see how fun it is to fight him!
  • HE HEALS, WHAT! Jokes on him tho, because he heals on the very first turn when my party is busy buffing rather than attacking, HAHA :kaopride:
  • I LIKE THAT WILHEIM ATTACKS CONSECUTIVELY at Richard, and this prince just, curveballs counterattack after counterattack, ohmygod, the epic fight scene in my head
  • BRO, ERIC TOOK THE LAST KILL SKSJKSJSKH IM LAUGHING SO HARD, bc everyone else is so buffed up Wilheim can't be bothered to let them counterattack him, so this fool decided to attack Eric, A THIEF, who EVADES EVERYTHING and counterattacks, I'm laughing so hard.... The irony :kaojoy:
  • THIS BATTLE WAS SO FUN!

Oh here's some minor things I found that can be fixed;
  • During the credits, the burning fire sfx is still playing btw, just to note =D
  • Sad to see the Game Over screen after the credits with such a somber music after all that hype of killing a Sephiroth, but hey, we killed a Sephiroth, what's not to love :kaoluv:

I like the battles the most! I really should incorporate showing HP bar and points going down on the enemies like you! Thank you for this game! It inspired me on working on the things that I lack!
The story was nice too, props to the solid team composition during battles as well.

And congratulations for completing it even after a computer crash! That will to continue trucking on despite these unforeseen circumstances is what I find deeply respectable! :kaosalute:

Thank you. I'm currently trying to work on my next game. Unfortunately, I suck at mapping, and this game is looking to be a lot longer than A Royal Pain. Also, I don't know where to find a spaceship to place in my maps so I'm just going to have to use teleport points to transport to the ship.

Oh, and @sy020, I ended up having to start making that game in MV. It had more of the resources I needed.

Been updating my game's control scheme to optionally use a mouse. Now the player pixel moves towards the mouse destination, which looks super sweet with the sparkles. Also turns out I made a Mouse Common Event plugin at some point... Thanks past me. :LZSexcite: Now the mouse wheel cycles different forms, and the right mouse button activates that form's special. :LZScool:
Oh man the controls in Mario Sunshine are pretty awful and I haven't even witnessed the controls without FLUDD
