For the last month I've been completed isolated in my home office to compose a symphonic poem. I've composed it as a classical piece and the score has been composed with that level of quality and detail in mind (for film and game music I put way less time and don't work much on the score since it's simpler). The track will be used in my current game project though (for a big city).

The title of the piece is "Lumière", which is French for Light. The theme is about light of course, but the literal light, and the metaphorical light. The piece will be played in a city in my game that just invented the light bulb, so the city if illuminated at night, which is why the city is called Lumens. The metaphorical meaning refers to the Enlighteners movement, since the city is the center of the intellectual development and it's the city of freedom in the game.

So I won't keep you waiting more than that xD. Here's the piece:

The choir comes in about half way and sings a poem I also wrote (it was a nightmare to make it rime). It's in French though, so I'll put a translated version.
Oh lumière des cieux,
Oh lumière des aïeux!

Jadis nous étions réduits
Prisonnier des abysses de la nuit
Lorsque frappe minuit.
Et puis nous avons vaincu les ténèbres,
Obscure rôdeur funèbre.
Notre flamme inventive

Oh Light from heaven,
Oh Light of our ancestors!

We once were reduced
prisoner of the abyss of the night
when came midnight.
And then we defeated the darkness,
that obscure sepulchral prowler.
Our inventive fire
triumphs over the hollowness of the night, old vestige.

See our illuminated city
that shines under the umbrous cloth
that is garden of the stars.
What a bright splendor!

Oh Light from heaven,
Oh Light of our ancestors!

It's a new day!
Let's free our souls and our minds
from these dolts,
those pretentious tyrants of ideas.
We are the Enlighteners,
the liberators of the chains of yesterday.
Be not afraid, dear friends,
we will defend your rights and your lands!

Witness the blossom of our art, the art of our culture,
for so long slave of those dictators!
Witness the blossom of our wisdom, wisdom of the future,
for so long hostage of those inquisitors!

Oh Light from heaven,
Oh light of our ancestors!
Here comes the sunrise,
Oh Light of tomorrow!

I want to thank the people that supported me morally during this hard endeavor. It was a lot of work in a short period of time (sometimes I composed for 12-15 hours per day for a month). Thank you @Finnuval for keeping me company during that time!

BONUS QUESTION: I was inspired by a particular Mahler Symphony when composing this work. I'm actually quoting the symphony somewhere in the composition. Can anyone find out which Mahler symphony it is? And which movement? Hint: the quote is after the choir comes in ;) . I'll personally congratulate the first person who finds it :p

Yeah I know, you were one of the few who actually heard it before I released it and heard the drafts while I was composing it. :p This is more to share it with others too!

Lovely. I'm going to have to think about the Mahler reference, there's something niggling at the back of my mind but I can't get it to come out into the light of day.

Better maybe in 'Art, Literature and Music'? It'll get lost here in General Lounge.

Absolutely stunning!! Reminds me of my favorite pieces from the Civilization games, or an even more epic version of the music in the best Magic Kingdom loops. Feels dramatic, hopeful, and triumphant - and if having nighttime lights are treated as a thing of wonder in your game, having this music set to that discovery is going to such a freaking awesome feeling.

Now I want to know more about your game!! :D

I had a very hard time making out any of the sounds from the choir, perhaps because the music was swelling so loudly and dramatically over them. I think that I'd have a hard time understanding what was being said even if I spoke fluent French. This did not take away from my ability to enjoy or feel the piece, however, so if you're comfortable with the choir and their lyrics being more of an "instrument" than a centerpiece, keep it exactly as is.

Yeah, that's the current technological limitation to computer generated choir. Samples and choir libraries can't quite yet reach the level of a real choir. The voice is one of the most difficult instrument to reproduce digitally, if not the hardest, especially the pronunciation of words.

Mon dieu est très joli! :kaojoy:

Such a charming little piece, at some points reminds me of the Civilization VI soundtrack whenever you achieve a new point of history. This is beautiful, and I really think it fits the context you have planned for it.

It's been two people now who have mentioned the soundtrack from the Civilization games lol. I don't know those games though xD.

It has a more epic tune, but some resemblances might be found. (Or maybe its just my inexpert ear)

@MrKiwi Ah yes, I can see why someone could hear some resemblance. Both tracks are of different style though, the civilization one is of film music style while mine is of classical style lol. The orchestration is vastly different, but they do use the same instruments (funny enough, the same percussions in this case lol).
