A Total Newbie Says Hello...

"Hello."


With that out of the way, a little about myself (as if anyone reads these! ):


1) I am old. So old, I remember when D&D came in mimeographed booklets! However, I only started playing in 1982 when my friend Lee decided to Dungeon Master. In 1984, we switched to AD&D 1.0, and I haven't cared much for any other version. My favorite CRPG of all time is Phantasy by SSI. Still haven't beat it!


2) I am odd. So odd, I refused to give up my C~64 when the NES came out. I figured, why get Mario when there's Giana. Excite bike?.. How about Racing Destruction Set. Sega?... you mean the COIN OP COMPANY?? Already gave them my money trying to beat the High Score on Congo Bongo. My Atari 2600 still works, what other console is needed? Besides, I like to program - can't do that with a console!


3) I am always late. So late. I never heard of Final Fantasy until it was all over the news back in 1997. Because I was sick, I rented the console and the game... and got hooked! The Japanese make RPGs??.. No way! Gotta play 'em all! What's this?... I gotta get this! Uh oh. I haven't the patience. Gotta play 'em all!


4) I am retro. So retro. I hate everything past FFX. HATE IT! What happened? Can't the Japanese make a good RPG anymore?... Oooh - Oblivion! Loved Daggerfall,  I wonder if it's any better?.. Old game collections for my PS2 & PS3. Shin Megami Tensei... Persona?... YES! (But I like the older stuff better... sigh..)


5) I am cheap. So cheap. I wanted to get a game engine. Can I afford it? Yes. Do I want to afford it? No. I will find a better alternative, one that is cheaper, one that allows me to tell stories. Wait - it's free? Hate the community though, I'll leave. What's this? Free? Kinda, but the community is too closed knit. I'll come back later. Hey! RPG Maker? Now THAT brings back memories. I'll try before I buy.


6) I am here. So here. But I have NO IDEA what I'm doing. So I will buy the engine at month's end, and will join the community to see what's what. Bounce ideas, etc. I just hope I introduce myself properly. Maybe a bullet point post will do it for me this time?.. probably not. You can never know anyone until you interact with them - disagree with them. Oh, well, time to make my first post (but should I explain about how proud I am I made a chibi using a tutorial, and that I am using it as my avatar?... nah.)

I may be a bit younger (25) , but I too love the classics =] And yes, Final Fantasy died after X.


You mentioned you might buy the maker at months end - well, there is a sale going on right now that ends in 4 days - you can even get one of the earlier makers for roughly $5.00

Kidding aside, I knew about the sale. (But it's good info for anyone who may stumble across this thread!) However, I dislike Valve to the point of neurosis - in particular Gabe Newell. And the last thing I will ever do is give that man more money. You can even say I am anti-Steam. So, I'm going to buy direct - but to do so, I need to wait for my check which comes at the end of the month. (after my rent, electricity, etc is paid of course!) So, yeah - I do appreciate the link, but RPGM2K is not really what I wanted. I don't mind paying full price for this - I was an early adopter for Torque, so I'm used to wasting money - but MV is pretty cheap imho. And as for content... I am not an artist. So, you won't see anything worthwhile in THAT department! But, I do find the program easier than what people say. It's not too bad - lots of tutorials and such. I'm getting the hang of it! (Damn, I feel like I'm turning into Billy Mays!) RMMV will even take out this ground-in stain! Or your money BACK! lol

Squaresoft died, and took Enix with it. You know what I did today?

You can like it - or anything else. It's your prerogative! My prerogative is to avoid it, before waterfalls of tears drown me within a torrent of nostalgic angst.


BUT - many old fans also talked badly about FFVII when it was first released, I remember going to Electronics Boutique and being yelled at by a few customers and the assistant manager for loving it. SERIOUSLY! So, take heart that this happens from time to time. New fans vs old fans: but still everyone is a fan!

It's all about that Super Mario RPG.

Not being trolled - SMRPG and FF Tactics are 2 of my most favorite games from Square.

I never got to play SMRPG - as I stated, my jrpg and Square days started in 1997. So it seemed like you were playfully rubbing it in.


As for the link... perhaps a zen master would say: It was a zen-like example of the obvious. BUT - I was only being playful back at you. No harm no foul! Also, ya got a follow due to your good taste!

   Salutations from a...not so old but not so young person either (Was born slightly after you started experimenting with AD&D, whatever that is) who also seems to have a taste for the older things, even by my own standards at times. Cant really decide for sure whether games are just arbitrarily getting crappier or if my disinterest is a survival tactic because I no longer have the time to play games like I used to, probably a little of both really.


   Regardless, it's always nice to see another oddball join the community. Have a nice stay. (Oh, and congrats on the ultra-rare "I actually read the rules" achievement. There is a reason moderators like Mlogan are so quick to advise newcomers towards them, though unfortunately it doesn't seem to make much of a difference most of the time.)

Lol, welcome to the group!
I had an Atari2600 myself until just a couple years ago when it died... Still have my NES and PSX though.
