There are several scripts id like to use that enable different mechanics in the menu. Things like crafting, bestiary, ect... Anyway, i know some things are self explanatory, especially since many of these mechanics have been used in many games over the years in one way or another. but to me, its kind of rude to expect a player to know what a menu option does just because they may have played a game with a similar function....how would you do a tutorial of how a crafting sytem works for example...like actually take the player into the menu and "show them around"?

How would you do something like this? Just explain it with signs on the map? Maybe make a school house like in FF, explaining everything?....Or just let the player sort through it itself?

Hmmm, it's always nice to have parts of your tutorial as parts of your story. Think of crafting a replacement part for a vehicle that you must drive.

As for the tutorial itself I'd say introduce menu elements one at a time:

  1. When you start the game the menu only has the save and exit functions.
  2. When the items menu is introduced the player can then access the items menu.
  3. Then when the crafting mechanics are introduced, only then can the player access the crafting mechanics
Most of what I said is said in this video (A very good watch):

Videos would be great :) Like many people, I'm a visual learner, and have been scouring through youtube tutorials learning about the engine.

Also I imagine videos would be faster to produce than, say, taking screenshots and writing the tutorial for it.

Edit: After rereading your original post, it is slowly dawning on me that you likely mean how to show a tutorial in a game. In which case, I apologize. My brain is fuzzy from all the gam mak >_<

My pleasure. The Extra Credits videos are awesome and very informative. Look around, you'll find some fun stuff. I'm very glad you got an idea.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
Yay, now back in action Happy Christmas time, coming back!

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? No-one c
