I finished the game a while back, and overall it's pretty OK. That switch barrier maze was pretty complicated but I blundered about all right (thankfully). I just had an issue with that segment with the girl, Chassa or Chasna - the pink hair one. Since she's alone in the party with no healing items (I think) she gets dangerously low health quite often and I had to resort to slowly healing her back via turtle stance, which is a bit of a time waster. The story itself is quite well done, except for the ending which is a bit too abrupt. Kinda like the developer got into the groove of developing but midway through thought "what the heck am I doing? This is just supposed to be a sample game!" and cut it off midstride, so it feels a bit knee-jerky. (Not that I'm saying the developer actually thought this, but it's just the feeling it exhibits)

Overall a good few hours break :)

I'm having trouble running Crysalis. I just downloaded it, went through the extraction, and clicked on the Application file titled "Game". It's the only executable I see, so I'm assuming I'm clicking the right thing. Then I get an error message that says "RPGVXAce RTP is required to run this game". Now, I'm not the best at all the technical stuff, but it seems to me that I shouldn't need to have the creation software to run a game. Am I wrong? I certainly am confused. I'm new to this whole process, and I wanted to try out Crysalis so that I can be sure that VX Ace is the software that I need.

I just tried that. Still getting the same error message.

But, this brings up a second question. Let's say I develop a game worth selling. Is everyone that purchases the game going to require downloading an RTP to play it first? Seems like a bad way to make a product.

You can include it in your project, what makes the download bigger.

They decided not to do it since it's a sample game for ace, most of the people playing it will install the demo anyway to try it out ^^

Did you install the RTP to the place it suggests?

Thanks. I know I'm a n00b at all this, but I appreciate it when people can explain simply. It really is a lot of help. So, sincerely, thank you.

As it turns out, I installed the VX RTP not the VXAce RTP when I tried it the first time (derpy-derp) :p So, now that I just installed the right one, it works now. But, it took you mentioning if I put it in the right spot to make me look at the download page again.

My rationale was for trying Crysalis first was thus:

1) Try sample game. If it met my expectations . . .

2) Download free trial. If it can do what I want it to . . .

3) Buy the full version and get cracking.

4) ???

5) Profit!

So, all said, I now don't have the time to try Crysalis right now, but I'll do so tomorrow.

Think of it this way: If you tend to download and play a lot of RM games, then it's best to download the RTP once.

Example: The initial dl of the RTP may take up to 80MB. That's probably not accurate, I'm just pulling numbers as an example. Anyways, a game without the RTP is 150MB. You demand that the developer include the RTP in their project, because you don't want to dl the RTP separately.

So they include it, and now their project is 230MB. You now dl the game and save it on your computer to play later. The next 2 comes out, same size, same thing. They add the RTP in their project, you then dl it, and now you have 3 projects (each at 230MB) on your computer, taking up a total of 690MB.

Now, if you had just dl'ed the RTP to your computer yourself, instead of asking the developer to add it each time, you'd only be looking at a total of 530MB (150MB for each game, and 80MB for a one-time dl of the RTP).

The point being, it's far less storage space in the long run if you're like me and tend to dl and save a lot of RM games for later use. If you're more of a commercial player, or if you tend to dl and play one at a time, deleting the game once it's been played, then the first method (having the developer include the RTP with their project) may be more convenient.

Even if you choose not to have the trial or the actual game editor, the RTP is needed for playing games. In any case, my view on this is:

1. If my market is RM users, I won't provide the RTP. Most will have the RTP anyways, and the few that don't have it, and won't download it, is not enough of a concern for me.

2. If my market is non-RM users, then including the RTP is much more convenient, even if it takes more storage space in the long run. The occasional RM user who happens along will just have to eat up the extra cost of space or look somewhere else.

By the way, trying the game doesn't count towards testing a trial. It helps, but considering that VX did not have any local sample games, it's not the only thing you can rely one. Just because you like a game made with a program doesn't mean the program is right for you. Consider this: I've played many games in XP that I liked, but having used the program, I've decided it's not right for me, as XP is out of my scope. I'm not a big mapper, so I've found the easier methods offered in VX and VX Ace more to my liking. Just playing an XP game, I would not have known that. I had to actually test the program to realize this.

mobychan's answer was sufficient enough that I understood, but thank you amerk for providing a bit more detail. As is, my eventual goal is to retail a game to the general public. Which means that most of my target market will not have the RTP already, nor will many be interested in downloading two items to play one game. It's perfectly reasonable for the RM community to want smaller downloads when they already have the RTP, but this crowd is a much smaller target market.

As for why I'm playing Crysalis as a trial: I need to see a working example of the capabilities of the software before I test the software itself. Whether or not I like Crysalis is irrelevant to whether or not it represents what VX Ace can do. For example, I had to see that character facial expressions could be changed per dialogue. I didn't care about the dialogue's content or quality. I just wanted a simple example of function in action. After I finish Crysalis, I should have a well-rounded sampling of the software's capabilities. Then, I can download the free trial to actually test its user interface and functionality. That will allow me to make a well-informed decision on whether or not to purchase it.

As for Crysalis itself, I've now only played it for an hour, and I fully intend to play more. Not only am I (thus far) pleased with its representation of VX Ace, I am also enjoying it. I imagine I'll have more to say after I've finished it.

Now that I have had a chance to play Crysalis through, I think that it did an excellent job of representing what a person can accomplish with VX Ace. It was fun, approachable, and clever. Additionally, it made excellent use of the resources and remained reminiscient of RPG styles of the '90s. Overall, an excellent free game and sample. Thank you Enterbrain for sharing it with us, and thank you to renehiko for creating it.

Now, as soon as I have the time (in the next month or two) I will absolutely download the free trial and sink my teeth into VX Ace.

Just downloaded the game & beat it 2 weeks ago. It was definately a fun game but I felt jipped when it said at the end of the credits that the game was shortened. I then opened it up & found sections of the world map that went unused & now I want to play the FULL version of this game. Where can I find it?

I hate to be a necro-poster but can anyone help me find the FULL version of this game?

Hello everyone!

This is Rene, creator of Crysalis!

I realize this is quite late, but the other day I was talking to a friend about Crysalis, and while chatting we discovered there actually is (or was) a thread about my game in your community, and it was amazing to read all your comments and feedback, both positive and negative. I just played the game again myself for the first time in about two years since I made it, and you guys complaining about the switch dungeon, you are absolutely right... :D

I think back then I made some JPG with a "walkthrough" but I couldn't find it anymore and had quite some trouble going through there myself, though I liked the idea of it, but it just became a "be lucky or not" thing in the end. Sorry for that.

I'll message some of you guys directly because I felt really happy about your comments, but in general, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who played my game and I hope it somehow helped to show what the VX Ace can do. I spent a lot of time using the character editor to create all the NPCs and faces, I am sure you realized almost every NPC is not from the templates but originally created with the character editor, the Shandorians all have their armours and brighter skin, the knights in Limenas all have the same uniforms, and stuff like that. My main focus in Crysalis was the battle system, as I am not a good programmer I used the default one, but I love to play around with Common Events and stuff like that, so I created a different battle style for each of the four characters, which was a lot of fun actually.

Actually, Crysalis was supposed to be a "full" game, but as I was asked to do a sample, I shortened the story a lot and cut it down to about 4 hours, the original story is about three times as long.

For those of you who liked it, here are some artworks of the Crysalis characters, how they were actually designed by me and my friend Kim Liersch, a German manga artist.

Behrings concept art:

Cha'ya, who was actually supposed to have a "Blade Wheel" as a weapon in the original concept:

Mio was supposed to look like this! ^^

The very first designs of Behring and his outfit:

The very first Cha'ya art:

Lyenne in her private clothing:

And as a knight:

These are her swords, I am sure you know them well from the game:

Actually, Mio was supposed to have a pet homunculus which could level up seperately and would perform physical attacks. I could not do this in the short time I had for the sample game and also I wanted to keep the party down to 4 characters in the sample, so I had to cut him out. In the original concept, Mio does not fight at all but only casts Crysalis magic and gives orders to his Homunculus.

For the user who liked Cha'ya so much, I hope you still read this:

The Power Hammer Behring uses made his way into the sample game.

Prime Minister Joaquin was supposed to be a bit more young actually. ^^ He played a big role in the original concept, but he also does his part in the sample game.

This is the original art for King Lenard.

Do you remember Cha'yas stances?

Finally, a Crysalis spring. You might know that artwork from the introduction sequence.

Once again, thank you all so much for playing my game. I am actually a game producer here in Japan for a small publisher called Spicysoft and just recently released my first Nintendo 3DS game here in Japan, it's called "Chariso DX2 Galaxy" and currently number 2 in the Nintendo eShop in Japan, so to all of you RPG Maker creators, follow your dream and make games, nothing is impossible.

Love you all!

Rene

The art has been done by Kim Jennifer Liersch, aka "tamasaburo", a German manga artist.

We have worked together on several projects, for example the manga series "Soul Sanctum" which has been published in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and has been awarded Best Manga National 2012 in Germany. (Story and dialogue has been written by me, art comes from Kim)

First, "he" is a she ;-)

And no, she is not doing any commissions at all. She is working as a 3D modelling artist now and the only work she is doing beside her job is the one she is doing with me, sorry. ^_^

No problem at all, most people think she is a guy cause of her drawing style. She is actually quite happy about that for some reason. :D

I would love to do something more big with the RPG Maker, but I am so busy with my job (where I am also making games... lol) that I hardly find the time. Maybe next year. ^^ And THANK you so much for playing!!!

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
