Hi, I'm trying to come up with some class names for a dual-wielding melee unit. However, I'm trying to avoid names with an intrinsically negative connotation, such as Outlaw, Rogue, Scoundrel, or Theif. Ya know, it's the ubiquitous high-Agility unit that is often seen wielding 2 daggers or swords. Any ideas?

Is ya gonna always be wielding swords, or can ya wield like, axes as well? If it's the former, yo dude could be a fencer or a swordfighter... If it's the latter, you could be a ranger, buut... there's the whole "I'm potterin' around the woods" bit attached... :kaoswt:

Mebbe yo dude could be a skirmisher or a duelist? They more neutral in terms of weapon choice. Or a gladiator? Tho that's got the whole arena business wid it...

EDIT: @Frostorm, ya totally need a copy of Roget's, or summat.

Wind Cutter, Neverseen Blade, yeah that's all i have.
Otherwise you could can try prefixes, Mystic Rogue, etc.
In the end i care more about what the class does in combat rather than it's name.

    • Knight
      • Duelist/Fencer/Saber
      • Guardian
    • Myrmidon
      • Berserker
      • Dragoon/Lancer
  • Scout
    • Marksman
      • Arbalist
      • Archer
    • ??? <- I need help here...
      • Assassin
      • Monk? (Insert unarmed class name here.)
  • Student (Ignore everything below this)
    • ???
      • ???
      • ???
    • ???
      • ???

Imma vote for skirmisher! Goes nice with scout, and you can, umm, kinda see the progression from skirmisher to assassin... No idea about yo unarmed dude, tho. Ranger would work too, I think! (Altho, is ranger too similar to scout?)

Hi.
Not easy to choose names for classes... Sometimes myrmidons could use dual swords... Gladiators, Fencers, Duelists, Mercenaries, Swordfighters, Heroes, Assauters, Tricksters...
Well, jope i could assist you with a few names...

I was having the same problem a few months ago... So i startes searching online... I didn't found many of the names i wanted, but in the end what really matters is the description and habilities of that class.
I also deslike the 'bad thieves' portrait, so i tryed not usin those to... But in the end i had to use Rebel, Assauter, Fencer, Spy, Strategist, Silencer, Rioter, Mercenary, Myrmidon, Bounty Hunter, duelist... And the most commom: Assassins, Ninja, Samurai, Swordsman/Swordswoman, Rouge...

Hope those names also help you.

Have a nice day and happy RPG Making!

I have used nomad too, but for a sword / bow fighter with adaptability skills (better in certain terrain) and tracking skills (low chance of been surprisingly caught and hability of pursuing - seeing steps from monsters on the floor).
I probably wouldve went with Wanderer, Wayfarer, Vagrant, or even Nomad myself.

I see you already chose one, but I can't resist saying- I've always been partial to "dancer" as an agility class. Maybe "blade dancer" for a very knifey one. There's something so fantastical about it, and it breaks away from the traditional "ah, another thief/rogue/bard/wizard" generic feel.

@Frostorm - Maybe this list will help you to choose most fitting name.
Nice list! Hmm, I might go with "Stalker" instead of "Skirmisher" but I'm still not sure. Thoughts?

  • Scout
    • Marksman
      • Archer
      • Arbalist
    • Stalker
      • Assassin
      • [unarmed class]
or...
  • Scout
    • Marksman
      • Archer
      • Arbalist
    • Skirmisher
      • Assassin
      • [unarmed class]

Which is a pretty sensitive subject for a lot of people.
I know exactly what you mean. In fact, I've been cyberstalked by a former member of these forums. She even tried making another account after she got banned, luckily the mods banned that account as well. It sucks when some stranger on the other side of the world knows your personal info like name, address, phone number, etc...:kaosigh:

Is the line of demarcation between the "Marksman" and "?" purely weapon choice? Is it melee versus ranged?

Is it that the "?" classes all dualwield and therefore are inherently melee? For instance, will anyone be dualwielding pistols?

The list in my OP is outdated. My finalized list of classes are as follows:
  • Scout
    • Marksman
      • Archer
      • Arbalist
    • Stalker
      • Assassin
      • Guerilla
  • Squire
    • Knight
      • Blademaster
      • Guardian
    • Myrmidon
      • Berserker
      • Dragoon
  • Student
    • Battlemage
      • Spellblade
      • Spellshield
    • Mage
      • Archmage
      • Summoner
Each indent in the list is a branching class upgrade. For instance, the Scout can "evolve" into either a Marksman or Stalker. Both the Marksman and Stalker can dual wield, but the Marksman only uses ranged weapons, including the ability to DW Hand Crossbows, whereas the Stalker can only use melee weapons, such as Swords or Daggers.

I have been enjoying a game on my iPhone, called Wonderbox. It is just a little game where you create adventures, share them, whilst also being able to play others. It's a bit zelda-esque. I have started some youtube for those, gonna start with RPG maker things soon as well. So if you wish to see, do check it out :)

I feel QSprite for MV is underrated. I basically am able to use my chibi sideview battlers I drew on the maps and have all the motions available. this'll help a lot with cutscenes.
I've figured out how to reasonably tall-ify chibi sprites on my editor. I like that making tall sprites gives me control on expressing how tall characters seem on the field relative to each other as well as better differentiate adult sprites from child sprites.
doing some wacky experimental stuff in MV right now :kaoluv: I cannot wait to drop what I've been working on
