Introduction

This topic aims to present the extension project developed by me and my team at the conclusion of our technical course here in Brazil. It was conceived in early 2015 and since then we worked in the construction of the script, systems, interfaces and characters. At first, the game would be developed using Unity 4 and would be a side-scroller with elements of parkour and RPG, we developed storyboards, drew characters and had a dense script full of details, but due to higher forces and our lack of experience with a 3D engine, we had to leave the Unity and replan the entire game from scratch.

We chose to use the RPG Maker VX Ace and make a JRPG. We adapted the story to fit in with the new mechanics and we created more characters. With a script so extensive (over 100 pages) and incomplete, we talked to our supervisor to surrender only a demonstration of all systems that we planed, in other words, we developed only part of the story (the beginning) where the player could learn all the game systems.

We decided to translate the whole script to English to reach a wider audience, but unfortunately we had no time to make an effective disclosure, so today, two months after the release of the first version, I'm posting my first game here in the forum. This community helped me a lot in the development of the project and the least I can do is to share this experience with you.

I hope you enjoy the game and that you can further help with your feedback.

Without further ado ... let's get to it!

Synopsis

In a world with two big continents, one of them starts to die because of the high levels of pollution which decimates a big part of the population...

In this context, a new organization called O.N.R.A. (National Organization of Environmental Revolution) arises from the ashes bringing ideals desired by all: the end of the pollution...

Their ideals are based in a new nanotechnology that turns any inorganic materials into organics, making it easy to decompose. They promise to clean the world from all polluting industries and rebuild every city in a way that human intervention on nature reaches zero...

Over time, O.N.R.A. cleaned an entire continent with its nanotechnology and after doing so, built a huge wall separating the clean and perfect continent from the dirty and miserable one...

You play as Alice, a young girl that lives in Kotah, one of the cities that O.N.R.A. promised to clean. She and her group will defy every rule, every limit to bring a better life for their families and to the population.

She'll face nanotech soldiers, robots, cyborgs e fantasy creatures of all kinds...

This better life that she seeks ... this future ... is beyond the Great Wall...

Main Characters

Name: Alice

Her goals: Alice aims to be the change in people's lives. She fights for all her family and friends.

    Background: With a very dreamy childhood, Alice always dreamed of living on the other side of the Wall. She is sensitive and hardworking, her critical sense on the society in which she lives is one of the most sharpest. She sees what others do not see and always protect the most needy. Her love for Kotah (city of residence) is almost as huge as her love for the family. Despite all these good features, Alice is unaware of the power of nanotechnology and the world around her, because her world has always been Kotah and views of cliffs to the other side of the Wall.

Name: Morgan

His goals: Create the perfect world. Destroy the unnecessary.

Background: As heir to the O.N.R.A., Morgan spent his childhood traveling the polluted continent with his father. As a child, Morgan had always been a sweet, charismatic and fun person, but something mysterious happened... and since then, things have never been the same.

Name: Alan

His goals: Protect Alice and her family. Destroy O.N.R.A.

Background: Orphaned as a child, Alan lost his parents to the big radiation in the area where he lived. Alone and hopeless, he was adopted by the family of Alice, but the pain of losing his family and the hatred against pollution made him leave Alice and create a resistance group against the impositions of O.N.R.A. Relentless and without fearing death, Alan fomented riots in major cities of the continent, being persecuted by the guards of the Leaves. Alan is skilled with weapons, charismatic and an exemplary leader, besides being the best friend Alice.

Name: Luna

Her goals: Freedom. Gain a better life. Revenge.

Background: Luna has her origins in the northern lands where she was an experiment of  O.N.R.A. for 10 years. Freed by Alan, Luna joined the resistance and now, seeks revenge for her beloved and her family. She is moody, introverted and sometimes rude, but one of the most competent of the rebel group. Her battle behavior is exemplary and direct.

Name: Weyne

His goals: Unknown.

Background: Little is known about Weyne, he joined Alan on one of his adventures and since then he's been the right arm of the leader. He does not express emotion, fear, happiness, much less empathy. He only knows how to follow orders ... and he does not speak ... ever.

Game Systems and Mechanics

The game has several systems and different scripts, all of them are listed and credited in the opening of the game. I put here the main systems:

  • Enu's Tankentai Sideview Battle System;
  • Victor Sant - Active Time Battle;
  • MOG's Battle Hud e Ultima Hud;
  • Venka's Crafting System;
  • Khas' Awesome Light Effects;
  • Yanfly's Menu Engine;
  • Day/Night Cycle (Evented);

It's a Active Time Battle System, very similar to Final Fantasy VII, although it has some unique features. Looking at the screenshots below you'll notice that there is no party. You don't get to play with more than one character, that's because our battle system is different. When battling, you get to combo your attacks by managing your stamina bar, that allows you to battle with eight enemies at the same time. It's fast, easy and somewhat unusual for an RPG.

The game presents a dense Crafting System. You can collect materials during your playthrough and find recipes to craft Consumables, Weapons and Armors. There is also a Day/Night Cycle. Some characteres and quests only appear at night, others during the day. The Stealth System will make you avoid guards and some creatures during your playthrough.

These are just some of the many features you will find in this Demo.

 Bugs and Common Questions

About bugs:

In the course of your gameplay you may encounter some performance bugs, this is due the fact I was using a huge amount of scripts in the project and have not yet wiped the scripts that override things that I do not need. Among the most common bugs that I already have knowledge:

  • Guards giving Alert during the day (Does not happen often);
  • Framerate drops during long battles (Not yet resolved);
  • Events repeating, like a cutscene that has passed or something (May occur, but I already cleared these problems);
  • Status "Poisoned" does not eliminate the enemy when its HP reaches zero (Not yet resolved);
  • Repeating lines after completing quest (Occurs, but does not compromise the gameplay);
  • Button "Cancel"in the "Exit" menu, crashes the game (Stay away from that button, if you leave the game, save and direct click the 'X');
  • States (Buffs and debuffs) bugged in the HUD (Not yet resolved);

If you find more bugs, please comment on the topic here so I can make a correction patch. I emphasize that most of the problems were resolved and in previous patches to version 0.2.0

About questions:

  • Why did you paralyzed the development of the game? A: My team disbanded after we finished this demonstration and we all entered the university. I'm doing two universities at the time and I don't have time to continue the project. It will be completed, I just do not know when.

  • Why don't you put your game on sites like Mega or 4shared? A: The GameJolt website provides an API that I'm using in the project. It lets you unlock achievements during your gameplay, so the game is hosted there. I'm not hosting it in other sites.
  • Is it bound to have an account in Gameloft to play? A: No, you can just download the game without any restrictions, but I recommend creating an account and letting a rate there. You can help me a lot!

  • How do I log in the game with my GameJolt account? A: Enter the tavern and talk to NPCs, one of them will make your login but for now, disregard log because I've not yet implemented the achievements in the Demo.
  • Can you teach me how you did "this" or "that"? A: Avoid asking tutorials here on the topic, because the forum has section just for that. I follow the forum support sections and I can answer you there. Just leave your question in the FAQ section.

If your question has not been answered above, please comment here on the topic.
The questions they I find most important, I'll put on the list.

Influencies, similarities and references

Below is the list of games and stories that inspired me to create the combat system and my original story:

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Dark Souls
  • Transistor
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • The Witcher

Download

You should access the GameJolt website to download the game. This is the link:

http://gamejolt.com/...ains-beta/45709

The game already includes RTP and weighs 850MB. You can also download the original soundtrack with 11 songs composed by Iuri, team member.

The playing time varies from 2 to 4 hours, depending on how you explore and level up. The maximum level is Level 8.

If any part of the game seems very difficult or impossible, return to the World Map and try to level up more. That simple.

The game features a battle system a little different from the conventional and may take a while for you to get used to it. There is a detailed tutorial in-game where you can train to facilitate your gameplay. To find the tutorial, defeat the first boss and find Alan's Hideout. Talk to one of the NPCs and he will teach you step-by-step how to manage better your stamina and how to make use of the combos.

Controls:

Arrow Keys to move the character.
"Z" or "Space" to interact with objects and NPCs.
"X" to open the menu of Alice or to cancel actions.
"Shift" to run. (Only works in some areas).

Battle Controls:

Arrow Keys to select commands and actions.
"Z" or "Space" to select.
"X" to cancel a command or action.
"A", "S", "D", "Z", "X" or Arrows Keys to make a combo. They appear randomly after selecting a skill that allows a combo.
Hold "Q" and "W" for a few seconds to flee from a battle. (Remember that the battle has to be optional for this command to work).

Have a great experience!

Thanks

To conclude, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to finish this demo. It is very important to hear from you about this project and how I can improve it. Make constructive criticism that can actually improve the game. That was my first game with RPG Maker and I know that the mapping is horrible without shadows and decent lighting, but I ask you to disregard because this is a Beta and all scenarios are subject to change.

I'm currently studying Parallax Mapping and depending on the feedback from you, I thinking to continue the game earlier and thus reformulate some maps and cutscenes. The project is too long, this demo is about 10% of the story and does not go too deep in the background of each character, so I recommend you to read the main characters section of this topic so that you can better understand and empathize a little more with the characters . I close here and I leave with you the seed of what may prove to be a good game.

I thank the RPG Maker Web Forum and all this amazing community!

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
