Saw this recently on Twitter

Only briefly looked at their information page but what I've read so far is pretty good.

My understanding of how it works is

- free apps for users

- devs get paid when people use their apps

Which is significantly different from the models that other app stores are using, as well as the monetization strategy for developers: instead of putting intrusive ads or a bunch of in-app purchases, you can just let your players enjoy your app and amazon will cover the costs themselves (which you would have had to do on your own through other platforms)

I'm wondering what amazon gets out of it.

First is obvious. Traffic.

Amazon can earn from any website ads.

It also includes cross selling info for future personalization of ads shown, according to metadata collected for your account.

You play racing games a lot? Here take an ad for a non free product that is similar. And here are some books about cars. Visit the bookstore. ;)

There might be more into it, but it is smart by default.

P.S. Thanks for the heads up.

Chances are they cut a contract deal with companies. Covering the costs in exchange for some kind of deal that gives them a tax write off most likely.

mmm ... 0.002 / minute = 0.12 / hour. If you make a 10 hour RPG and someone plays it all the way through and takes the full 10 hours, you will receive $1.20

I suspect it's not as good as that though - some little catch somewhere.

All I can think when I heard about this is: ADS! ADS everywhere when you play the game/apps....

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
