There are games out there where the player is a criminal and gets bonus points for killing people, so why would some of those be sickened by games about killing animals?

The questions you really should ask are:

1) Is that only a shock effect or does it has a function in the story?

2) Do you want to make a game that attracts similiar players to this?

If it's only for shock effects and not related to anything else in the game, then you might think about changing it - not because the idea itself, but because any game should be a coherent whole, not patched together for effects.

But if both questions are answered with yes, then go for it - just look for coherent ideas and make a quality game instead of a collection of shock effects.

I mean, if the feature is a major part of the story and not just tacked on then by all means go for it.
