Are you getting the new Nvidia RTX?

They accomplished something amazing: real time ray-tracing! If you know how CGI is made and understand the fundamentals (or if you ever used blender or any other 3d software), you know why it's amazing: what traditionally takes minutes, or even hours to render a single frame can be done in milliseconds. Of course RTX is taking many shortcuts to reduce the rendering time, like reducing the amount of rays and using AI to denoise the image, using ray-tracing for light only (objects still use rasterization).

Now, even if this is a great achievement technologically, there's still a lot of draw back for the consumer:
1) Ray tracing means a lot more resources to render, meaning 1080p 30fps will probably be the best a RTX 2080 offers on AAA games.
2) Not many games will use RTX in the next 1-2 years.
3) The price for the performance in RTX will not be worth it to many people.

I guess this is what new early technologies are: NEW! These cards won't be cheap, but I suppose it's what we call an early adopter premium. Personally I don't intend on buying 20 series card. My 1080ti will do just fine while I wait for Real Time Ray-Tracing to develop a bit. I'll probably go for the next generation.

What about you guys?

Regarding tech my philosophy has always been "make the potato over-perform", I'm always behind the times because computer technology is devalued so damn fast I see it as beyond foolish to ever be anywhere near "the cutting edge". I prefer being on the "sturdy flat" as it were, where things are reliable and 10% of the price. :D

I will wait to see how it compares to the current gen cards first. Like, in various situations, games, 3d rendering, etc..
Might also wait till next gen for better 'stability'.

@Philosophus Vagus Not going to lie, I like being having the latest and best hardware not because I need it, but simply because I'm an enthusiast lol.

@?????? Same, but honestly I don't expect super high performance with ray tracing ON. It is a completely new technology after all. I'll still wait for the third party benchmarks, and it's probably about 20%-25% better than Pascal with RTX turned off. Still, I'll probably skip this generation not because of performance, but because of the price.

Yea, very few games will benefit from it for a few years at least. but it will eventually get adopted by the mainstream aaa titles, and when that happens, gonna need to have a card that can keep up with the demands of those titles. I mean, we might not get a boost in fps now, i think it will be more, as time passes, the fps will be lost due to having 0 ray tracing built into the cards.

Not right now, it's way too early and I'm not interested in being at the top temporarily, because that's essentially what you're paying for when you buy something like this so early, being at the top for a short while with the newest technology.
A GTX 1060 is able to handle anything you throw at it very well and it costs much less, so I don't see the point of wasting money for something so new that only a few games might be able to use well, and by the time enough games will use it well, the current gpu models will already be outdated.
4k doesn't interest me, what is the point? 1080p looks great already and VR games are mostly trash. Ray Tracing looks cool but I can survive without it, for now it's just an extra.
The good thing out of all this is that the price of the 1080ti will drop.

Yes, but I'm getting 1 2080ti in October and the 2nd a few months after that.
I'm also going to build a ryzen threadripper 2 monster :)

Too much money for me right now but the tech does sound amazing.

@Frogboy It is amazing. Real time ray-tracing is a big deal, but I'm afraid an early technology means bugs and un-optimization. Rumors suggest that with RTX on, 1080p 60fps would be the best the 2080ti will offer. I might just wait for the next generation.

Games are multi-platform now, for cost reason.
If the next generation of consoles doesn't support Raytracing, it won't happen on PC as well.
Developpers already don't take advantage of the currently most powerful cards and features, you can't expect a studio to dedicate resources just for a few people. The slowest of the couple console/pc will drag the other down, just as it has always been.
Sure, there may be a few PC exclusive games that'll feature raytracing, but not enough to justify the cost for many players.

@cabfe Fair point. That's why I'm talking about early adoption. However, I believe ray-tracing is the future (not only lighting and reflection, but complete ray-tracing like the one used in CGI) and will be present in every platform. That might be in a far future, but we're going one step at the time.

Why on earth would you get 2 for one system? you realize they have no sli fingers? buying two would literally be the absolute dumbest waste of money ever.

I feel like the iq test information in your sig is a lie...

Unless, you mean your buying 1 for your current pc, and then building a threadripper and putting another in that? that might make sense, but dude, word your messages better...

Yes you can, only the 2070 does not support NVLink (Multiple cards), do a little research will you?

@?????? As Rukiri said, only the 2070 doesn't support the NVlink. And you can use multiple GPUs even if they're not in SLI or NVlink, for example GPU rendering (like in Blender or Maya for example).

lol not even 1 but 2 of them, well to each their own I guess. It's just pointless for me right now, I mean do we really want to sacrifice fps for a bit of shiny stuff? Ray Tracing is like Nvidia PhysX and Nvidia Hairworks, cool effects but nobody bothers about using them or most of the time really notices that they are active. Also the prices are beyond ridiculous.
At the same time though, nobody is forced to turn RT on with these new cards, some people might just buy them for the performance boost over the 1080ti (especially regarding 4k).

In the meantime, I'm here petting my GTX 1060 and telling her that she won't be replaced anytime soon.

All Hail 1080p! Still the best resolution.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving!
