Eastern I enjoy, but sometimes I do enjoy western...would Castlevania be western even though it was made in japan? If so Then that's the ONLY time I like western art style...other than Infamous and other games that arn't WRPGs...

Castlevania is western-style.

it basically comes down to "anime" vs "not anime"
You can't even say that. Yakuza games are obviously japanese styled, but have nothing to do with anime. Final Fantasy is obviously japanese and doesn't really look anything like anime.

Anyways, as for the OP...the right answer is whatever looks best given the game. You shouldn't think of "western" art or "eastern" art (anymore than you think of "arab math" or "european physics"). There's just art. Use whatever style fits your themes the best. A light-hearted Harvest Moon-type game, has lots of reason to go for an anime-like (or at least colorful hand drawn) style. But I wouldn't want that inside my Monster Hunters.

I prefer Eastern art in video games. The Eastern style looks more mature and realistic. I am turned off by the Western style. It can look very childish.

@Kaelan: Actually, Castlevania's art style depends on the game. The newest game, Lords of Shadow, (and it's upcoming sequels) are very heavily "western" in style. Portrait of Ruin, and Dawn of Sorrow, are quite "eastern" looking quite anime-ish.

Several of the games had art by Ayami Kojima, (Symphony of the Night, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, etc.) Not sure what to call that style (besides beautiful!)

Well, the sprites themselves, not sure...they have more realistic proportions than your average 2D action platformer, but it's done in a "Japanese way" if that makes any sense...

Jawnsunn: Maybe RATEDRKOFRANKLIN was saying western can be childish because of western cartoons, most of which look really strange and "childish" if you wanna call it that. Like, most American "comedy" cartoons look absolutely awful.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
