ATK vs MAT

I've been wondering: How do I know whether ATK or MAT is used in the skills I make? Might seem like a dumb question to some, but I can't seem to find the information.

Do all skills use MAT and regular attacks use ATK? I don't use Magic as one of the Skill Types. Is it a MAT if it uses MP by default?

when you select Hit Type => Physical, it will be ATK
when you select Hit Type =? Magical, it will be MAT

I cannot be sure about Certain Hit though.

the skills use the values you place inside the damage formula of the skill, nothing else.
that means you have to tell the skill what to use, and if you simply put a fixed number there neither value will be used.

for example the default attack formula is 4*a.atk - 2*b.def
that means multiply the skill users atk by four and substract double the skill targets def

@ShadowDragon wrong, the hit type changes the internal processing to determine if the skill hits, it has absolutely nothing to do with atk or mat.
