Since no thread for august has appeared yet, I decided to start one myself ^^

Are you ready for the last month of summer ? What do you plan to do ? How are you progressing ? We all want to know !

P.S. : Can a moderator pin the topic ? Thank you :D

So the plan for this month: Get the story for a chapter in my game put together and finalized. Get the character concept art for this chapter put together. Decide on how I want to map it out/get basic mapping done. Get basic eventing done. Annnnnnnnnd work on menu graphics.

I can't tell if that's a lot or not enough. x]

What I have done so far this morning: make characters in database with basic graphics. Not at all helpful to anything.

Another month, another chance to make some progress! Okay, my goals are (like usual)=

- event my main game up to the sixth boss

- write more dialogue for my side project

- get some more backgrounds/cutscenes done for my side project (since it's going to be visual novel style)

- requests XD

@mlogan

You seem to be grumpy because I did it in your stead, but it doesn't matter who opens the topic, does it ?

Anyways, my goals : doing the 9th mission, and starting the 10th one, it should be feasible. As for the facesets, huh, maybe, maybe not :D

Working out my goals for this month is a bit tricky, as I shall be away (no laptop, not even internet access on my phone) for nearly a week.  I'm also going to be switching back and forth between A Timely Intervention (the project I'm just finishing off) and the new project (unnamed so far).

So what I know about:

  • Help with the final details, debugging, etc of A Timely Intervention. That might involve yet another playthrough after it's been put into the commercial launcher, dunno yet.
  • Check the Strategy Guide includes any alterations needed because of the balancing done by Indinera.
  • Start putting together tile sets for the new project.  I know some of what I will be using, but I also know that more work will be needed on them.  (Ancient Dungeon set, for example, has no internal doors or wardrobes, plus I shall need all sorts of variations).
  • Start sorting out which scripts I'm likely to be using and testing out any new combinations in a dummy project.
  • Start database work (groan, gnash teeth, reach for that stiff upper lip Brits are supposed to have).
  • I have story outlines, and a few character outlines, but loads more work needed there.
  • I might have to break off and do a bit with The Tale of a Common Man, that depends on scheduling.

As I only have 3 working weeks in August, all of those, except the first two, are likely to be just baby steps

mlogan makes banners and artwork for each month's thread and occasionally plans an activity to make the thread more interactive. While it's not an official thread, that's usually why we wait for her to make them. Rest assured it will always get made.

Yep, not cranky or grumpy, but I do kinda feel like it is my pet project. No I don't have an official authority or rights over it and I can't stop someone making it. But I do enjoy doing so, even if I don't have time to post in the actual thread much. That's all.

August Goal: Same as July, which is to finish Chapter 4. Though RL is about to pick up again for a week or two, so that might hurt progress.

8.1 Update too: Spent today mapping the Dwarfen farming town of Emberfield. Emberfield is at the very bottom of a mountain range, at the ocean. However, due to its location it is very hot and humid there (and the active volcano a little ways north of the town doesn't help keep the temps down at all), which the party will (of course) comment on. It's a small pass over town, and if the party takes one of the routes through the chapter they will have to go through the town, otherwise it's optional.

Plan is to now event the rest of the town. Two of the shops are done, and outside NPC's are done (which there are very few due to the high heat...would you stand outside in ~95 - 100 degree F + humidity if you didn't have to?)

After last month's failure, it's time for some goals that I'll have no problem completing.

  • Make and post more resources - I have a couple of half-finished sprites I'd like to complete, and want to make some more medieval tiles
  • Open up my alchemy game and do some planning for it - my poor game's just been ignored the past few weeks, so I'd really like to get back to it
There we go, some nice and simple goals.  The only way I won't get these done is if I fall into a pit.  :)

Some interesting goals being posted.  Ah, just seen one which says 'sleep'.  What's that?

@anioh

I disagree, I think doing that basic database work is not merely helpful, but essential.  Don't knock it!

@bgillisp

Maybe have a child or two sat in the fountain?  (If there is one, that is).  But yeah, I agree, although I also have floating through the back of my mind the line from a Noel Coward song which goes "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" so perhaps I might risk it.  Probably the humidity would do me in, though.

@hiddenone

No pits, please.

My update

Started arranging tile so that they align better against walls.  Takes up a lot more space on a tilesheet, but definitely worth it.  Started making the additional bedroom furniture (sideways double beds, bedside cabinets, wardrobes).  Begun thinking about the mechanics, posted the first query on the forum for the game (always an important milestone, that one), eliminated a couple of scripts that I used in the last project, as I don't want to do the same skill structure two games running, and thought about how to change the implementation of skills.

@ksjp17: After all the stress/all-nighters/tears from July I think I deserve a month to just lay off and sleep xD (and maybe play some IGMC games :D !).

I'm sure others will agree too ^^

And fyi, if you think I've forgotten, just shoot me a pm.
Do a monthly doodle :3 please?

Gah! %&^^& Extermonday; I got the blue Dragon plush to bed and mommy cat find that cute! (XD might had reminded her when she let one of her kitten to sleep in my face.) It's really draining folks. I hope I finish straight for Monday morning... So before that I'm on hold. But I'd really rather finish my list than scrape the apartment on rainy days! (I love rainy days... Don't ask!)

@bgillisp: I certainly wouldn't stay outside with those temperatures. Instead, I'd hide in a basement or something. But yay for having dwarves that for once do not live underground, or on snowy mountains (nothing wrong with those, though).
@hiddenone: Better check for painted on pits/holes more often, then (you know, those from older cartoons).
@nio kasgami: Goals involving (eating) food are great.
@ksjp17: You have my admiration for having completed several games and already working on the next one.
@Marquise*: I hope the [unintelligible string of swear words] bed bugs disappear for good this time.
@Everyone in general: Lots of motivation etc. for your goals! And rest for those who need it after IGMC.

Goals for August:

  • design and make uniforms and such I need for my placeholder charsets (can't have Ahron working in the kitchen wearing a sweater, can we)
  • test out and think over some things regarding busts VS facesets (note to self: keep my tendency to overdo things and run in a direction at 150% speed without thinking it through in mind)
  • continue and finish implementing the pre-1stDungeon cutscenes and dialogue
  • finish planning the surroundings of the base and start mapping the next area
  • write dialogue and cutscenes for the next part (post-base, pre-dungeon)
  • implement aforementioned things
  • plan the story for the first dungeon (less specific, since I don't know when exactly I'd start with this one)
  • make a list of what I need to do some more research on and start with that research on the side (surface-level research is preferrable to none at all)
  • in general: more designs, especially for the characters needed (only for those that have at least minor plot importance)
And since it's already August, I have some progress:

  • another character sketch: Varan, who holds the (inofficial) position of Head of Communication due to circumstances despite his actual rank(lessness – he's actually a regular enlisted soldier). His birds are the only means of longer-distance-communication available in the base and the only connection to the outside world right now (the birds are the same I sketched a few days ago, so they might not fit with their current positions – and again, still not quite sure about scale and colours)
He's inside the spoiler (a little shy, that one).

I used references for Varan's pose, and for the birds' poses, anatomy, and design – since they're based on real-world birds.

And I know, my shading gets sloppier every time. >_>"

@ksjp17: I actually have a couple people near the fountain already, a few more in the marketplace (as they still want to sell their stuff), and a couple that exit/enter buildings (that took a *long* time to set up too). Oh, and a squirrel or two, because, squirrels. Thankfully it is not a big town, or at least the part you can walk around in, as I stop you from walking into the farming area (at least at the moment).

@Chiara: Their capital is still the typical mountain town, but the side towns, not so much. That mountain town has to get food somehow after all. So, the town at the base of the mountain was born as well. Northpass is also going to be in a valley (and nowhere near as hot) so will not be a typical mountain town either, and one of the last towns is going to be in a desert (though the Dwarfs might want less armor for the desert town, but at least it will be a dry heat).

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
