Hiya!

Liked the reference? Eheh. Heh.

Okay, now we're talking seriously we swear.

So, we opened this topic for various reasons.
In order not to unnecessarily clog the topic dedicated to The Rebirth Of Franklin Albrecht (we always put the updates of the Archives there), but also because we realized that it is a very large topic and that we think could stimulate interesting discussions. :)

To begin with, you could ask us:

Why focus on this current?
First of all, because we are talking about a real current with a series of specific characteristics, and the external public itself sees RPG Horror games many times as a single reality. Then because we are talking in particular of a current that would bring up many themes, we will focus in particular on two questions that, if you want, you can extend to other titles and correlate them:

1. The first one: what do you think of the possibility of inserting the authorial videogame development ( the current Horror RPG is only a case study, but we could give you other examples) in the world of the market?

2. The second one: what do you think of the transformation of the video game, which seems to want to approach, already from the type of some incipits (and also developments many times) and narratives that have a lot of similiarities with the plots, or style, of a film: think of the emblematic case of Red Dead Redemption 2 (we take this example because it is the most obvious case we have found, you will see the images below).

Once Upon A Time In The West

Just compare the use of colors, the composition of the image, the very similar style of the font, and also the traits with which the characters were drawn. The inspiration from Sergio Leone is clear.

So, going back to the main discussion, we will try to summarize everything with a small introduction making the point of the situation.

We are talking about the transformation of a series of games that has changed its priority for players from experimenting with various ways to immerse the user in exploration to narrative immersion - often also "passive" - of a simple audiovisual work; and this often coincided with another path, that is, from the authorship of the titles (these are developers like all of us who also found themselves starting from scratch to have contracts because of what was perhaps for them only an activity of the spare time) to an attempt to immerse them in the market, and we speak above all of the ancillary market. The most recent example (excluding the anomalous case of Corpse Party) that comes to mind is the production, distribution and reception of the public of Angels of Death (a case that we will cover in the Ludi Tarantula Archives section in the future) which, to take a study sample, you can see how it split the reviews on Steam in two.

Let's move on to link some material of the topics we have already talked about.

1-We have first of all the Introduction of Back to the Future, in which there is a more in-depth version of the premise made here

2-The Midnight Train review, where we introduce the direct comparison between active and passive spectators, the how and why in the end many of the passives become creators (as in the case of the author of the treated game, most likely)

3-Here is the main page dedicated to the section we are talking about, Back to the Future, with the links of the first three articles published on:

We await your answers! If you don't see immediately answers from us it's because we don't have a lot of time to check the topic and answer well to people, but on one hand we don't even care: what matters to us is to read as many opinions as possible on these subjects! So if you want to have fun among yourselves, we don't turn around like ticks. :>

Enjoy the reading and good continuation!

NEWS: Topic updated with the Mad Father article!
On this we begin to introduce the discourse we made on the videogame as a "passive", audiovisual work and the subject of marketability, which is treated once again but with nore setail. We hope these article can be food for thought :)

For us, the story of Horror RPG ends with Angels Of Death. We also like some of the modern games that come out in these years, but we have a reason why Back To The Future stops with Angels Of Death. The reason is said in the article. It would be useless to talk about those games.
The intentions of Back To The Future is NOT to make reviews in the general meaning of the word: as we said in the introduction, is to trace a story of the Horror RPG current with only some representatives of certain "Generations".
We can guess that those games belong in the Storytelling-Focus generation. Or, in general, we don't think they marked the history of this genre.
But well, we take these as general recommendations to play for people that will read this topic. We can thank you for those, maybe?

However, since we will no longer update this topic I wanted to take the opportunity to add a clarification.
We had mentioned this warning on the Archives, but we repeat it here. That is: obviously do not take all our speeches as total certainties. Being "history" of a genre, you can never say you've fully explored all facets of the topic.
So if you are interested in a certain case study, a certain publisher, a game that has received a particular reception from the public, or you have realized that a particular social and economic scenario has formed, for example, or if in any case you would like to consider other elements that are worth investigating for you, try to make your own way. If you then want to share observations here they will be welcome, as they say, "everything goes."
You never say no to extra knowledge. :)
Bye!
