Anyone remember the battle style where characters had the classic final fantasy 3 or 4 members on screen to the right/left an moved with attacks, even showed the weapon equipment?

Does this even exist anymore in rpg maker? If so how? What options & where?

I recall seeing it in xp but then vx didn't have it (maybe i missed it?) An now ace is out.. What are my options?

I'm considering ace despite the price tag.

I remember seeing the characters having swords in the old VX side view battle system.
I'm not sure about the newer ones though.

So they did away with that style? That'd be a deal breaker for me..

Also.. It's a shame there is no comparison chart for xp, vx, vx ace.. Leaves alot of unanswered riddles..

there are some battlesystem scripts that add animations or other effects to the battle - you might search for "Battle Engine Symphony", that should have most of what you want. There are other alternatives as well, but you need to add those functions by scripts, they are not part of the default (and if I remember correctly, they weren't part of the default with XP either, you always needed scripts for that)

I have old game exe's from when I used my friends xp & vx as far as I can recall.. Xp had it an vx suddenly got rid of it.

Would you be implying he installed a script like your suggesting?

yes
got to the XP page: http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/products/programs/rpg-maker-xp

There is a video, and beginning ca. 0:25 you'll see a short sequence in the default battle system of RMXP - and that is front view, without any movement of the battlers and with fixed, non-animated battlers for both player and enemies.

Edit:

there are free 30-day-trials for every RM

http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/free-trials

Just download and compare for yourself what features are default.

And both XP and Ace have a lot of scripts available for free download - the master script list for Ace contains about a thousand different scripts.

An your certain of the side battle script for vx & vx ace?

Just what really makes ace better? Shadow support? Smoother play/construction?

In your view of course.

This question has been asked before:

http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/18209-rpg-maker-xp-or-vx-ace/

(and several other topics as well)

What it comes down to is that XP has some mapping functions that are missing in Ace (especially a third map layer, Ace has only two), but Ace has a much improved database that can do a lot of things that were impossible or needed scripting in XP.

A few more side-effects are that for Ace, the available scripts have been compiled in the master script list (for XP, you have to hunt them down on the internet yourself) and that XP is now so old that modern windows versions are beginning to give it problems (all solved so far even for Win8, but you'll have to look for the solution in this forum if you got problems.

On the other hand, unless you catch a sale (happens three or four times a year) the price for Ace is a lot higher than the price for RMXP.

(VX is not an option when buying a new RM, the price difference to Ace is so small that it does not warrant missing the many improvements on Ace, and VX already has the mapping limits of Ace compared to XP)

But the battle systems are more or less identical, the only difference is the battler picture for actors in XP, and even for that there are already scripts to correct that in Ace.

But just download the trials and see for yourself...

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
