Recently, I've been thinking about the battle system I want to incorporate in my puzzle game. I originally intended to create a custom evented battle system, but it's pretty limiting.

Since I want to add items and crafting into the game, I felt like items that are used primarily for battles would be ideal, but I'm at a loss as to what battle system will fit well with my game.

Currently, I have a version of Yanflys battle engine, and a walk character plugin from SumRndmDde. But as I'm only using one character in battle, it all feels too clunky. I was thinking about messing around with some window customizers, but I've also had thoughts of using alpha ABS, so I'm at a loss which to try first.

Which brings me to my question, which battle systems do you prefer? Which battle systems do you think would work well in a puzzle game? How have you handled battles in your game when the traditional system seemed like it wouldn't work?

Thank you for taking the time to read my rant, and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Have a great day!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
