Is there a quicker way to ensure that the tileset (forest, dessert, etc) is represented in battles than to create troops for each unique battleback? Seems like re-creating troops mutiple times is wrong, and I'm not sure where to look for a tutorial.

I'm new, fyi, if you didn't know

Welcome aboard!

Battlebacks are controlled at the edit map window. The battleback seen in the troops part of the database is for you to have a visual reference when placing troops in the encounter. I am unsure if there is a way to set up a default battleback, since I usually set it for each map.

Yeah I meant like when my guys walk on a Forrest, it's a Forrest backdrop and when they take a step into a meadoa, its grassland and so on.

Oh okay, I don't use a setup like that, but I know there is some discussion on the boards here somewhere about changing battlebacks based on terrain tags. I just hadn't tried it.

As already said in the first response, you set the battleback via the Map properites, not via the Troops window.

When you choose the tileset for the map, you can choose the battleback at the same time.

The tooltip on the maps says that when you don't specify a battle back, if the map is a "world map", one is automatically selected for you based upon the terrain tile the player is on. For all other maps, the battle back is simply a transparent overlay of the map itself, unless you specify a battle back.

How it determines the difference between a "world map" or any other regular map, I have no idea. I suspect it has something to do with the tilesets and whether or not you specify as "world type" or "area type" under the "mode" in the Tilesets. Though, this also affects how the Autotiles work as well... I also don't know of any way to determine which tiles conform to which battlebacks in the "automatically selected" feature. The "Help File" is... well... less than "helpful" on the subject.

There's probably a way to do it using "Terrain Tag", but you're only given numbers 0 through 7 to work with, so I'd wager it probably wouldn't work very well.

Ah, how I miss the good old days of simply setting which tiles were which terrain in the maker... I wish I knew why features from previous versions of the makers were abandoned that were actually very good "quality of life" features, in favor of a nebulous and silly "just program it yourself!" mentality of adding plugins to do basic things that previous makers used to be able to handle by default.

I actually wonder if there's a way to specify battleback by "Region ID". If there's not... it might be worth requesting it as a feature in future RM Engines... or an update to the existing MV... The way the Region ID thing works would actually make it ideal for selecting Battlebacks by location, since you can select troops by location...

It is based on the tileset "mode". I think it's either "world" type or "area" type. Too lazy to open MV and look :)

I think the only way you'd do it via terrain tag or region id is if you had a plugin, as those things don't have much meaning without one (apart from region being used to select random encounters).

Yanfly made a script a while back. I've used it. It works great.

You can do it with eventing as well by using "Get Location Info" with the Map X and Map Y of the player as definition. Then in a paralell process on the map change the battleback in a conditional branch.
