I've actually found this (rather lengthy, that takes patience!) document to be quite useful, but the one thing that annoys me is when some people, rather than answering questions, are pointing people to this. From a personal standpoint, I'm a lurker. I will browse and search before asking, most of the time. I sought answers to two small things involving eventing, and anywhere I saw someone asking something similar, I saw "Go read this: <your link>." This is, sadly, quickly becoming a quick answer for newbies needing help, and does not necessarily answer questions. For the record, the one I struggled with was: For a cutscene indoors, where an NPC needs to "appear" because they came in the door, what do you do? I have since solved this, and now have a completed intro cutscene, but with many answers pointing somewhere that may not have the answers for them... I don't know what the solution is, but this is sadly making a lot of people lazy in offering help. By no means, however, take this as an accusation, your work is amazing and helpful. Some people just need to be made aware that this isn't, and likely was never meant to be a be-all-end-all solution for beginners.

Pardon my rant, however, and keep up the good work. =D

The reason people direct people here is because things like making an NPC appear are very basic. I'm not saying somebody doesn't have to help, but generally when basic questions about the program are being asked, it's a sign that they need to understand the program before making a game... thus, the reason for this guide.

Yes, but this guide illustrates how to make an NPC, and how to give them a movement path, but NOT how to make one appear. It may seem basic to an experienced user, but to someone whose last attempt at RPG Maker was years ago on the PS2, something such as this can have a steep initial learning curve.

do you want the npc to appear after a certain event happens or how do you want it to happen? and also i don't know if you have rpg maker vx also but if you do checkout the guide for it and also look up rpg maker vx school, practice events, and lets use rpg maker vx and download them and look every thing over because it will help out alot.

While it is true that this could contribute to when asking a question people throwing you a link to this large guide and expecting you to read through it to find out a solution, it is written with the purpose of teaching you the basics and then hoping that the user will experiment in order to find out more on their own. So it is both laziness on the part of offering help, but I feel that to a degree it can also be laziness from the user in not experimenting, unless something is really beyond you. But that's just me. :3

Just to say that I've updated the guide to version 0.9 which I'm pretty happy with but there could be more added at a later date. I wanted to get this out sooner than later though and for most purposes this guide should be pretty much done.

Thanks, Kelsper.

Awesome! And a copy of the game to go along with the tutorial, for anybody who needs additional help.

some more ideas that i thought of are:

1:having party members walking side by side like in the final fantasy games when they talk to the king.and more then one event moving at the same time..

2:walk through walls to find hidden areas.

3:how to use the horse and carrage vehicles effectively.

4:a side quest where the event pays you money for every enemy of the same kind. (ie a slime = $50 4 slimes = $200 ect...)

when i think of some more i'll add them if i dont forget lol

Thank you for this guide, i'm a newbie e_e. Don't know anything about the program but i've seen some video tutorials about it, (My RPGVX ACE doesn't show the help content so i'm looking for help, coz i'm helpless without the main help of the program...), again... Thanks for this.

I found this very helpful for someone just starting out, everything is explained just enough I feel and it gives a wide range of different things you can do.

You need to use WinRAR or any other extracting program to extract the files. WinRAR can be found at:

http://rarlabs.com/download.htm

That's probably your easiest option.

Great Tutorial! One problem I have, and I don't know what I did.. is that after Fayne joins the party, and says her dialog about the boat.. my whole party disappears from the map. I can move what I assume are my characters, but I can't see anyone.

Well I'd like to commend the author for this. Clear and well presented guide.

This makes beginners feel like they can easily understand the basics and move on to more advanced game mechanics.

Obviously being an English pedant (please don't throw stones at my windows) I could suggest a few grammar corrections but they would in no way improve the overall tutorial other than, perhaps, the flow.

Well done Kelsper!

I love this guide. Just got rpgmaker today so this is really helpful towards understanding the software and it's functions.

Thank you for the hard work.

Could you please make it to where people can edit it, if they want? I am not going to put mine up if I did edit it, I just would like the option to, because there's a few things I've learned that I would like to add in some parts, and in other parts change things around. Don't get me wrong, this is a great walk through and very well done, it's just there's a few things I would like to change, in my copy of this.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
