If you mean based around games made by RPG Maker, it is one of the best, but I wouldn't go as far to say it is the best game ever.

Can't say I played "To the Moon". All the trailers look really awesome for it though. IMO, the best rpgmaker game is "Master of the Wind" by Volrath and Artbane. Really good in the way of both story and game-play ideas and it actually managed to get complete despite how very long it is. Pretty rockin. Anyone who hasn't should totally try it.

Other really good games are:

"Star Stealing Prince" by Ronove. Although I wish someone would make a "Let's play" of it because I'm a really casual gamer (*cough I'm lazy*) and that game is very hard, so I haven't gotten around to beating it. What I did play though was really good. The whole game is really beautiful and has a very interesting story. It's worth a go for sure!

As for the ones I've played that aren't completed....

"Twice Upon a Hero" by Lunarea is really good. It really excelled visually and I remember loving all the cute details and custom animations. It's plot is good and I remember liking the main character. It was a good go, but I wish we could get some more. ^^

"A Dust Tale" by Edumazieri is another one that's good. The demo was so polished! It was visually good and pretty fun to play. It was so gosh darn short and had so, so much potential. I don't think it's being worked on anymore but it's fun to give it a try and it's not very long either. Definitely a fave of mine.

"Amulet of Athos" by AK47 is really good. I played a very early demo when he used rtp style graphics. It's a fun game with a really interesting story. I kinda wished he didn't go crazy with the visuals just so I could get at more of that game. But the visuals he's making now are so beautiful. If he manages to finish, that game is going to be ridiculously breath taking.

"Pirate Rush" by Galv is one of the more recent games I've taken a liking to. It has a unique style of mapping that I really enjoy. The humor is pretty good and I like the story. The battle system is pretty unique too. There's a lot of new and different things in this game that's worth a shot to play. Plus there's a cool doggie and I'm a big fan of doggie party members :3

Those are the games I think are pretty cool that are public. There's a few under-wraps that I had the privilege to play and all three of them are awesome.

RMMV
Actually, Raven, there is a LP on youtube that works as a sort of walk through (though the poor guy misses a lot of skills and the like). In addition I know someone else is doing another LP so that might have more commentary if that's what you want too.

As for the Best Game Ever, I don't think there is just one! But I wholeheartedly agree with Raven's post! There are too many good games to just pick one best game, in my opinion. Each game has its own strengths and while I have favorites, I also know that other people have different opinions than me so I can't really say Best Game Ever. :p

Best game ever?

Here's my short list:

Baldur's Gate Trilogy: megamod installation - easy 200+ hours of gameplay, great characters, banters, romances, etc...

Planescape: Torment: one of the first to really bring role playing into a cRPG.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - one of my most replayed games (clan quest mod rocks). Too bad they had to rush it at the end.

The Witcher: great story, graphics, characters, music - this one got about everything right (and no DRM as of Enhanced Edition).

Knights of the Old Republic: Another one that did everything right. One of the best stories in a cRPG.

Final Fantasy VI: The bad guy wins and the world is 'destroyed'. Now you're out for revenge. Great job switching characters around so there is no 'you'.

Ask me again in a week and I'll probably have a different list...

Without a doubt Fated Haven is the best RM game I have ever played. It's fun and has a good direction in it.

I'm pretty sure this topic is about completed RPG Maker games.

It's obvious Kitty Quest is the best game ever to grace the world of mortal cats.

Actually, I think Quintessence - The Blighted Venom deserves that title

Esper Wing Chronicle caught me off-guard. It is very well made game and it does not take itself too seriously. Heck there is Butterfly boss who tries to wield a huge sword.

I'm spoiled for choice, but because I like long games, good stories, varied gameplay and characters, I usually end up with something from Aldorlea. My favourite from there at the moment is The Book of Legends which has got everything I like about RPGs. It reminds me of classics like Final Fantasy or Phantom star, but it's too original to be simply compared with those. Before this one came out, it was 3 Stars of Destiny and the laxius trilogy - told you I thought I was spoilt for choice.

Well, OP should have said that then if that's what he meant. But why lower the bar? (and to me it didn't sound like OP was limiting his comparison to RM games only)

Look at Planescape:Torment - there was nothing 'revolutionary' about its graphics, even when it was first released. It was isometric 3D, the first game released (I believe) using the Infinity engine. What made it special was the dialog - for the first time (that I know of in a major release) there were no 'right' and 'wrong' dialog choices. You answered the way you wanted your character to, and your character progressed accordingly. That and the absolutely awesome way they dealt with the dying/reload mechanic.

Why can't stuff like that be done in a RM game?

I think it does a disservice to everyone when "the best ever" gets tossed around without really thinking about what it means. That goes for games or Grandma's Chicken Soup. If you want your games to be ranked up there, do your homework and play some of the true "best ever" games in whatever genre you're going for. Figure out what made them great - why fans still talk about and play them years after their release, then use that in your games, as much as you can anyway within the limits of your tools and skillsets.

If you want a case study to look at consider Blizzard and World of Warcraft. They went and found all the things people liked in the current MMO's and found a way to keep them, and found all the things players hated, and found ways to solve them. Packaged up in a relatively pretty package - the graphics were good but weren't mind-blowing, they went for a 'style' that wouldn't age rather than trying to be as 'realistic' as possible.

And yes, they had a budget of about a gazillion dollars and are one of maybe four or five software development companies that can honestly afford to release something 'when it's done'. The principle remains the same.

What is it about VtM:Bloodlines that keeps me going back to it. And why do I stop probably half of my games after I finish the Hollywood Hub? Why do I still play Baldur's Gate after all these years. What about the games you keep going back to - do you ask yourself those questions?

Welcome to the internet. "Worst ever" is even more common.

The point about ambition in RM games is well-taken, but I think all Sigma/Vile meant was that this section of the forum is meant to discuss RPG Maker Games and a "best video games ever" thread would be in the "Video Games" section. There's a very entertaining "favorite games" thread there already, actually.

I'm sure it can, it "just" takes a Fallout fan to produce a complete and polished RM game.

But then again, is it this thread limited to RPG? Because for me the best game ever is Sensible Soccer. :D

I've only played Ib and Lore of Lorewyn, so I can't really say. D:

To the Moon was more of a story than a game.

I most say that most RPGMaker games can't hold my attention for some reason.

But my favorite is without a doubt Exit Fate by SFCWorks

This is probably because it is so close to my favorite game series Suikoden, just love it.

I'm a big fan of Suikoden, so I loved Exit Fate (even though I'm halfway through) and Legion Saga ... in fact, Legion Saga was one of the games that got me into RPG Maker, so those three games have a special place in my heart. The stories in all three were great. My favourite is Legion Saga II (because kobolds are super awesome). The Way was also pretty good, but I think it lost the plot somewhere towards the end.

There are lots of promising projects here, so they may top some 'best ever' lists in the future. I personally can't wait for Amulet of Athos, but due to the amount of content AK47 is putting into that project, it may be some time.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
