My top 5, in order with best at top.

RPG Maker 2000/2003
  • Town3 (used this for my first RPG Maker game, super nostalgic, lol)
  • Shop1
  • Village1 (best at max tempo)
  • Hero2
  • Boss1 (especially with a bit of increased tempo)
RPG Maker VX Ace
  • Theme1 (it's overused, but I'll always love it)
  • Town5
  • Theme5
  • Scene4
  • Field3 (why is this so cheerful?)
RPG Maker MV
  • Town1
  • Battle3 (arguably RPG Maker's best battle theme ever)
  • Theme1 (why do I never hear this used in any games?)
  • Theme6
  • Battle1
RPG Maker MZ
  • Town3 (at 80% pitch for perfection)
  • Castle3
  • Scene5
  • Field1 (has a bit of a Fairy Tail vibe)
  • Battle7 (just because it's so unique, lol)
Still waiting for an RPG Maker that has some interesting dungeon themes. Those always feel so meh to me.

Let's see!

[MZ] (has so much good stuff in it, but these are my tops)
  • Battle3
  • Battle8
  • Dungeon5
  • Field1
  • Field2
  • Scene7
  • Ship2
  • Theme3 (this is oddly good for boss battle music due to its tension)
  • Town3
[MV]
  • Battle2 (this is my default battle theme even though it was probably meant as boss music)
  • Battle4
  • Battle8 (even though it's become synonymous with yanfly's plugin videos...)
  • Castle2
  • Dungeon1
  • Dungeon4
  • Scene6
  • Theme4
  • THEME6 ON MAX VOLUME (just kidding, pls no)
  • Town4

THEME6 ON MAX VOLUME (just kidding, pls no)

If MZ's Theme2 was the default one, it would definitely reach the same infamy as MV's Theme6. MZ's default Theme4 is actually a pretty soothing tune.

Let me copy-and-paste my top threes and why from a similar RPG Maker Network thread, because I picked way too many there.

2000
1) Field4 -- My absolute favorite RPG Maker song. Sounds like an shonen theme song. The last bits of the tune really give a "winding roads" feel to an adventure before you.
2) Dungeon 4 -- Natural yet mysterious, it would work perfect for a waterfall cave or sunken ruins.
3) Fairy2 -- My goodness, it's so soft and sweet. Maybe a bit sorrowful? Perfect for innocent love, childhood memories, etc.

2003
1) Tavern -- Well-named! Very cozy and cosmopolitan.
2) IceCave -- Works well for something heavenly, or even the default name of a beautiful ice cave. Maybe a frozen castle?
3) Adventurers -- Jolly, whimsical tune of going on an adventure with your buddies! Great for a lighthearted game, or an opening act before things get serious.

XP
1) Town6 -- Has a rather rustic and ethnic feel, bustling and lively! Reminds me of something out of FF: Crystal Chronicles. Lovely stuff!
2) Theme4 -- A reprise of "Theme 3", it'd be perfect for a heart-string-tugging cutscene if Theme 3 is used for the game's title screen!
3) Battle2 -- Honestly, one of my all-time favorite RPG Maker battle tunes. Kinda reminds me of the battle theme from Dark Cloud 2 / Dark Chronicle. Courageous and fantastical!

VX
1) Field3 -- Warm and energetic! Great for a summertime adventure, or a magical vacation.
2) Battle5 -- As no VX song is designated as a boss tune, this'd work well for a mini boss. Gets you pumped up, but implies the enemy knows what they're doing. A tone of "they're tough, but we're tougher".
3) Dungeon1 -- Earthy but otherworldly, like Dungeon 4 from RM2k. More about the journey into the unknown than anything epic, with an eerie calm.

VX Ace (to be fair, I love most of them)
1) Theme4 -- Dreamy start, then hopeful and heroic when it drops the beat. If not for the third Honorable Mention, this would be my favorite RTP title screen tune.
2) Town2 -- Cozy after-hours tune to me, maybe some late-night shopping or a night on the town?
3) Dungeon3 -- Vibes of Super Mario World's ghost houses drip from this one's gothic tones.

Honorable Mentions
1) Mystery2 (2k/3) -- Lawl, Uematsu plagiarism.
2) Defeat2 (XP) -- For a short game over fanfare, probably my favorite from RPG Maker.
3) Opening1 (2k/3), or Theme3 (VX) -- Far as I'm concerned, this is the unofficial theme song for RPG Maker. ;3

Sorry for the slight necropost, but it's for a relevant reason. Does anyone know the name of the composers of the music, particularly for RPG Maker MV? Is there a list anywhere? I'd like to give them full credit in my game if it's possible. Cheers!

I know it’s been almost a month since this thread got its last post, but since the music in VXAce is the main reason I now have MV — long story, and I’m not conscious enough to point at my recent introductory post — I figure I’ll drop a top five from those two (in alphabetical order for simplicity’s sake).

MV
» Battle3 — Hard to beat this for that climactic battle feel.
» Dungeon1 — The “What is this place?” vibe is good for somewhere seemingly out-of-place.
» Dungeon3 — Not outright threatening, but a sort of not-so-low-key menace to it.
» Theme1 — A great overworld theme for unfriendly regions or post-disaster.
» Town2 — Perfect for that kinda weird out-of-the-way town, and a slightly frazzled feel at 110% pitch.

VXAce
» Battle3 — Whether for a recurring NPC you always fight or just a random battle, this is a solid track.
» Dungeon3 — For when the Bad Guys™ are plotting something nefarious in a cutscene.
» Dungeon8 — An NPC who rescues the Good Guys™… and wreaks havoc on the plot in the process…
» Scene2 — Violence and attitude just waiting for an excuse to be unleashed upon somebody.
» Scene5 — No matter its surroundings, this specific place has an aura of peace and welcoming.

Did you know that 90% of people in the world use the number in their sentence as they see fit?
It's been a long time since I was here but I have a lot of updates... btw I am teaching again about game programming and game design in some schools here in Brazil hahahaha It's good to see kids and teens learning this kind of thing!
welp, I literally can't continue working on ALEX now that my MZ trial is up (unless I somehow place in the jam which I don't remotely deserve to for my unfinished crap) so I am back on my bullshit
some test stuff. Empty for now. My other project (this project) needs more attention. The lagging really kicks up when I try to capture gameplay. ✨
