i'm thinking about making a horror jrpg rn and i don't really know which one to pick. the games i've played and watched (ib, yume nikki, ao oni) were created by the older versions like 2k3 and xp, so i was considering those. XP is probably what I’d be getting, is it worth the price ($24.99)?

I've moved this thread to Product Discussion and Support. Thank you.

There is no version that is better or worse for a horror RPG. It is all about what style you want, and even then the later versions can be made to imitate the look and feel of the earlier versions using plugins and/or different graphics, if that's what you want.

As this is an RPG Maker forum, you will not be able to ask for suggestions involving other editors.

The only difference the editor makes that I can think of is that the newer two (MV/MZ) have access to plugins that can use pixi to create very horror-esque visual effects (screen distortions, static, etc.).

Ok, thank you for the info. Out of 2k, 2k3, XP, and VXA, which would be easiest for a beginner that is completely new to scripting/coding/eventing?

As far as I know, 2k and 2k3 don't support scripting, so you're limited to what you can do with events. XP and VXA both use a Ruby derivative. Eventing is basically the same across the versions.

I don't see any real reason to go for an old version of the software. If it's about the graphical style, it's pretty easy to pixelate the graphics in the modern versions, as Shaz said, and the further back you go you're simply more limited in what you're able to do and in the available resources (scripts that modified the engine being hosted on Web sites that have been lost, etc.).

But whatever you feel you want to do is cool.

Right now, VX is regular price of $39.99 on Steam, XP is $24.99, and 2003 is $19.99. Just a few weeks ago, MV was on sale for $19.99 on Steam and $15 on Fanatical, which typically happens several times a year.

If you really want that look and feel, 2K or 2K3 would be okay (I haven't used either so really don't know the difference). But if you'd like the flexibility of customizing some things via scripts - there are still plenty around without you having to learn to make your own - then Ace is definitely the superior option.

Just depends on their prices and if you can find any deals.

To add to what has already been said, VX Ace also has a Lite version on Steam if you want to try it out - basically a trial with no time limit, but certain other limitations (number of maps, events, and database entries? I can't remember what exactly they were). But it works well enough for getting a first impression of the engine.

XP and VXA are a bit different in terms of program layout, but I didn't find either of them much more difficult than the other to pick up. (Those were the two I started with; can't say anything about the older versions since I haven't used them.) If you've learned to use VXA, switching to one of the recent versions at some point down the line wouldn't be too difficult since the program still looks more or less the same, even if the underlying code has changed completely. You can probably find some older threads on this forum that compare the different versions.

I'd also recommend waiting for a sale if you're at all concerned about the price, they tend to happen relatively frequently. (isthereanydeal.com is a pretty useful site.)

revised version: Beginner here, aspiring to make a horror Japanese RPG-type game. So I looked through some threads on the site about the different RPG Maker Versions, searched some stuff up. One thing I wanted to know was the most user-friendly and most simple version to use, while simultaneously being able to make the game feel "retro" or old-school. Some examples of games I would like to create are Ib, The Witch's House, Blank Dream, Corpse Party, Misao, Strange Men Series (I know some were made with Wolf but the same game atmosphere). I actually was recommended VX Ace; currently, it's $70 USD, and some experienced people in a thread recommended me to try the Lite version first, so I am about to try it out. Answers would be greatly appreciated.

I'm just going to merge this into the other thread you created for the same question. Please just keep all discussion in the one thread, unless you're asking something totally unrelated. Thanks :)
